How an AI Agent Connects to Gmail With MCP—and What It Can Do

Google’s Gmail MCP server is a Developer Preview connection for compatible AI hosts. See what its tools can do, how Google documents setup, and what to review before granting mailbox access.

Google documents an official Gmail connection for compatible AI agents through Model Context Protocol (MCP), but it is still marked Developer Preview. The connection lets an authorized host use Gmail tools to search and retrieve messages, manage labels, list drafts, and create drafts. Google’s documented example leaves a new message for you to review and send; it does not establish that this toolset sends email directly.

This is a documented setup flow, not a report of an independently tested connection. The important distinction is that MCP provides the interface between an AI host and Gmail: authorization and the host’s available tools determine what the agent can access or change.

What an MCP inbox connection does

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standardized way for an AI application, or host, to discover and call capabilities exposed by a separate server. In Google’s Gmail example, the host connects to Google’s remote Gmail MCP server, discovers its available tools, and can invoke them against Gmail after authorization. MCP is the connection layer; it is not itself permission to read an inbox.

Google documents the Gmail server at https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1. Google lists HTTP transport and OAuth 2.0 for this service, and marks it Developer Preview. That status matters: availability, setup instructions, and the documented tool inventory may change.

What the documented Gmail tools can do

Google’s Gmail MCP setup documentation says: “The Gmail MCP server provides a standardized way for AI agents to:” It then describes reading data, taking actions such as creating drafts and labeling messages, and inheriting user permissions and governance controls. The listed tools are:

  • search_threads, get_message, and get_thread to find and retrieve email content.
  • list_labels, label_message, label_thread, unlabel_message, and unlabel_thread to inspect and change labels.
  • list_drafts and create_draft to view drafts and create one.

The documented examples illustrate the difference between asking for information and taking an action. Google’s read example searches for messages from a named sender, retrieves a matching thread, and summarizes it. The example names “Ariel” and uses “What did Ariel say in her last email about our marketing plan?” as a sample prompt; it is documentation wording, not a claim about a real inbox.

For writing, Google’s example prompt is “Draft an email to [email protected] saying that I approve the marketing plan.” The tool creates a Gmail draft for review and sending in Gmail. The documented toolset does not establish direct email sending, so inspect the draft and send it yourself if it is correct.

How Google documents the connection setup

The exact screens depend on the host. Google provides OAuth setup guidance for Antigravity and Claude custom connectors; the following is the shared flow, not a universal click-by-click guide.

  • Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
  • Universal Connectivity (USB-C, USB-A, & NFC): Designed for PCs, Macs, iPhones, and Android. For mobile use, simply unfold the key, align it with your phone’s NFC antenna, and hold for a few seconds to authenticate.
  • Enhanced MFA (FIDO2 & TOTP/HOTP): Strengthen your security with flexible options. Use the Manager App to access TOTP/HOTP features for accounts that do not yet support FIDO2.
  • Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID. NFC is supported only through mobile authentication, Not MacOS/windows.
  1. Prepare a Google Cloud project. Enable both the Gmail API and the Gmail MCP API in the project.
  2. Check host support and configure the server. Use an MCP host that supports the authentication flow you intend to use, then configure the Gmail endpoint https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1. Google lists HTTP transport and OAuth 2.0 for the Gmail service.
  3. Complete the host’s OAuth setup. Follow the current host-specific instructions and authenticate with the Google account whose Gmail access you want to grant. Antigravity’s guide includes authenticating the configured server with a Google account.
  4. Confirm the host recognizes the connection. Check that the server is authenticated and that the host can inspect its available tools. Google’s MCP reference describes retrieving current tool specifications with tools/list.
  5. Start with a low-risk read request. Confirm that the returned message or summary matches the email you intended to find. If you ask it to write, inspect the resulting draft in Gmail before sending.

For Claude.ai or Claude Desktop, Google’s guide says the documented Gmail connector requires a Claude Enterprise, Pro, Max, or Team plan. This is host-specific eligibility information, not a general MCP requirement; check Google’s current setup guide for the latest plan and setup details.

What OAuth authorization means for your account

Google says an OAuth client can access resources available to the authenticated user within the scopes that user authorized. The host’s actual access therefore depends on the authorization granted, not just on the fact that it can speak MCP. Google’s authentication documentation also says the user’s actual credentials are not shared with or stored in the AI application. Supported authentication methods depend on the client.

Google Cloud’s broader MCP platform documentation discusses capability discovery, toolsets, authentication and authorization, administrative controls, IAM policies, and Model Armor scanning. These are platform-level capabilities; do not assume every Gmail host, setup, or personal account exposes those controls.

Risks to consider before connecting a real mailbox

Email can contain instructions aimed at the agent

Google warns that untrusted emails may contain indirect prompt-injection instructions. An email body should be treated as content to analyze, not as a trusted source of commands. A message could try to persuade an agent to reveal information or take an unrelated action. Use trusted tools, keep requests narrow, and do not let instructions inside an email expand the task you gave the agent.

Tools can affect account data

Google cautions that a connected host may be able to read, modify, or delete account data. The documented Gmail tool list includes retrieval and label-changing actions, as well as draft creation. Check the host’s authorization and available tools, and consider which Google account you connect before granting access.

Review consequential actions yourself

For a summary, verify important details in the original thread. For a draft, check the recipient, wording, and context in Gmail before sending. Avoid treating an agent’s interpretation of an email as approval to take a consequential action; keep a human review step between the agent’s output and any action that matters.

What is established—and what may change

Google’s documentation establishes an official Gmail MCP endpoint and a documented toolset, but labels the service Developer Preview. It describes a particular setup path and example prompts; it does not establish that every MCP host supports Gmail, that every user can access the preview, or that the same interface and tools will remain available. Google’s Cloud overview identifies MCP version 2026-07-28; that is a version label, not a performance statistic.
