That is a dated progress figure; it does not establish that the original 3,500-installation target has since been reached. How does laser projection work in a movie theater?
The simplest way to understand the path is to separate the jobs: the light source supplies illumination, the projector engine forms the image, the lens system directs it, and the screen reflects it toward viewers. The following describes general cinema projection. It is not a teardown or specification sheet for a particular AMC projector.
1. A light source supplies illumination
In a laser projector, lasers contribute the light used to create the projected image. Cinema systems include more than one way of producing that illumination. In a laser-phosphor design, blue lasers—and, in some designs, red lasers—work with a yellow phosphor wheel. In an RGB laser design, red, green, and blue lasers supply the primary colors directly. Barco describes both approaches as producing a white-light interface that enters the projector engine, though the light’s spectral properties differ.
2. The projector engine forms successive movie frames
The engine controls the illumination so that it represents the image in each successive frame of the digital movie. In other words, the laser is not the complete picture-making system: the engine determines how the available light is arranged and controlled to create the changing image.
AMC’s public disclosures do not specify the image-forming architecture, laser arrangement, or projector model used in every standard Laser at AMC installation. It would therefore be misleading to describe one particular chip, optical layout, or laser configuration as universal across those auditoriums.
3. Projection optics send the image toward the screen
After the engine forms the image, the projector’s optics focus and direct it through the projection opening toward the auditorium screen. The optics are part of the path from projector to screen: they deliver the formed image at the auditorium’s viewing surface. The precise lens and setup depend on the equipment and room, and AMC’s general Laser at AMC disclosures do not give a single set of lens specifications for all locations.
4. The screen reflects the image to the audience
The screen is where the projected image becomes visible to the audience. What a viewer sees is not determined by the light source alone: screen properties and auditorium geometry also affect the presentation. The projected image is delivered through the projector’s optical system; do not confuse that general arrangement with a design in which laser light necessarily scans the screen point by point.

RGB laser and laser phosphor are different approaches
Barco identifies RGB laser and laser phosphor as coexisting cinema projection approaches intended to serve different market requirements, rather than presenting one as the universal choice. Their key distinction is how they produce light before it enters the projector engine.

The distinction matters because “laser projector” is not one exact optical recipe. Both laser approaches use lasers, yet the way they generate the light entering the engine differs. The cited AMC disclosures do not say which arrangement is fitted at each standard Laser at AMC auditorium, so a viewer cannot identify an auditorium’s configuration from the initiative’s name alone.
Narrower spectral bandwidth is a technical difference in the light, not by itself a guarantee of a better-looking picture in every seat or theater. Barco describes the approaches as options for different market requirements. The available AMC announcements do not provide the model-by-model details needed to rank particular installations or compare their measured color performance.
What AMC says the laser upgrade changes
AMC says its laser upgrade improves image contrast, produces more vivid color, and maximizes brightness compared with digital projectors using xenon light sources. It also says the program guarantees light levels near the top end of the 2D DCI specification. These are AMC’s stated benefits; the company material cited here does not give a numerical light level or independent, venue-by-venue measurements that allow a reader to quantify the difference at a specific theater.
AMC’s April 2022 announcement also said laser projection eliminates xenon bulb replacement and reduces energy use and waste. Those are company-stated maintenance and environmental benefits, not figures for measured energy savings or waste reduction at an individual location.
That distinction is useful when comparing what the technology is with what a patron might notice. Laser identifies the illumination approach. AMC’s contrast, color, and brightness statements describe the intended improvement over xenon-based digital projection, but they do not establish that every auditorium produces the same measured result or that the laser source alone determines the complete presentation.

AMC’s announcement framed the installation as a premium presentation with limited capital investment. Adam Aron, then AMC’s Chairman and CEO, said on April 22, 2022: “Laser at AMC, powered by Cinionic, allows us to bring a premium on-screen presentation to hundreds of our theatres and thousands of auditoriums around the country, for a greener way to go to the movies, with only a minimal capital investment.” That is the company’s characterization of the initiative, not an independently calculated measure of cost or environmental impact.
Laser at AMC is not the same name as every laser-equipped AMC format
AMC also lists laser projection in Dolby Cinema at AMC, PRIME at AMC, select IMAX at AMC, and newer builds. Those are separately named formats or auditorium packages; “Laser at AMC” should not be used as a catch-all label for them. Dolby Cinema at AMC, for example, combines Dolby Vision laser projection with Dolby Atmos and other auditorium features. The fact that several offerings use laser projection does not mean they share an identical equipment configuration or feature set.
For a viewer choosing a ticket, the format name is therefore more informative than the word “laser” alone. The projection light source is one part of the experience; the named format may bundle additional picture, sound, or auditorium features. AMC’s public information does not establish that every laser-equipped format uses the same projector or has the same specifications as a standard Laser at AMC auditorium.

What the public rollout figures do—and do not—tell you
The rollout numbers describe the scale and status of AMC’s program, not the performance of an individual screen.
- Original target: AMC announced 3,500 planned U.S. auditorium installations in April 2022, with completion then expected by the end of 2026.
- Reported progress: AMC’s 2025 annual filing says 2,951 U.S. installations were complete as of December 31, 2025.
- Project value: The 2022 announcement put the agreement and related auditorium enhancements at around a quarter of a billion dollars; it did not give a per-projector cost.
These figures should not be read as evidence that all 3,500 installations were complete by the target date, nor as a guarantee that a particular auditorium has been upgraded. The filing’s count is specifically a U.S. total at the stated cutoff date.
The project value also should not be divided by the planned auditorium count and presented as a projector price. The announced amount covered the agreement and related auditorium enhancements, and AMC did not provide a per-installation breakdown. Likewise, the end-of-2026 date was the expected completion date in the original 2022 announcement; the 2025 count is a later status report, not proof of the eventual finish date.

If an AMC auditorium is identified as Laser at AMC, the useful takeaway is that AMC describes its projection as powered by Barco laser projection, with laser illumination replacing a xenon light source in the upgrade program. The image still depends on the projector engine, optics, screen, and room as a system. The public information supports the broad path from light source to screen and AMC’s stated performance goals, but not a universal hardware specification or independent measurement for every location.
