Amazon Store lets a publisher write one product link and have JavaScript build a link for a visitor’s inferred regional Amazon store, rather than hardcoding one country’s destination into every page. Dave Cross built it to simplify the international Amazon links on his content sites; visitors can also choose a store themselves, and the original link remains usable if JavaScript does not run.
The publishing problem Cross wanted to solve
Cross describes a familiar maintenance tradeoff: link every reader to one regional Amazon store, or keep separate links for many stores. A single destination is simpler to maintain but may be inconvenient for readers elsewhere; separate regional links mean more work as content and stores grow. These are his observations about his own publishing workflow, not independently measured Amazon-wide findings. Cross’s account on DEV Community explains the motivation.

Amazon Store shifts the regional destination from hand-authored markup to a small client-side helper. A publisher supplies a product identifier or search phrase and, optionally, an associate tag; the helper constructs a regional Amazon link. Cross’s aim was to write the product markup once instead of choosing a country for every link.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow the link is built and the region inferred
The project README documents a browser-first region inference process. It considers browser navigator values and time zone, then falls back to the page’s language and hostname top-level domain, with a fallback region if those signals do not settle the choice. Developers can also force a region. These inputs are clues, not proof of a visitor’s location, so the automatic destination can be wrong.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Cross describes an example in which a browser language set to plain en did not identify an India-based visitor as being in India. It illustrates why language-based routing should not be treated as guaranteed geolocation. Amazon Store provides a “More stores” grid so readers can choose directly when the inferred store is not the one they want.
Ways to handle regional Amazon links
| Approach | Publisher maintenance | Visitor destination | Without JavaScript |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use one fixed regional link | One destination to maintain for each product, but readers in other regions may not reach their preferred local catalogue. | Always the region selected by the publisher. | Works as an ordinary link. |
| Maintain separate links by region | More regional destinations to add and update across content. | Reader must be given or select the relevant regional link; the destination is not inferred automatically. | Works as an ordinary link. |
| Use Amazon Store | One marked-up product or search link; the helper forms the regional destination and can add an associate tag. | Inferred from browser and page signals, with a store grid for direct visitor choice. | The original markup remains a usable link, according to Cross and the project documentation. |
This comparison describes the approaches’ mechanics, not a measured difference in sales, performance, or affiliate attribution. Actual associate-program credit depends on the applicable Amazon program and account configuration; the project description does not establish a particular commission outcome.

What developers can configure
The Amazon Store README documents the implementation options below. Its stated preference is to use an ASIN where possible; a search link is available when product identifiers differ by store or a search destination is more suitable.
data-amazon-asinmarks a link using an Amazon Standard Identification Number.data-amazon-searchmarks a link using a search phrase instead.- An associate tag can be supplied globally or on an individual element.
- A regional store can be forced when browser- and page-based inference is not appropriate.
- Optional additional URL parameters and a path override are documented for cases that need them.
The README documents CDN and npm installation, UMD and ESM builds, per-link overrides, and an MIT license. It also describes the helper as dependency-free. The documentation available on 2026-10-07 showed a pinned CDN path for version 1.2.2; because release information can change, consult the repository for the current version rather than assuming that number is latest.

Why keeping the original link matters
Cross says the HTML link remains usable if JavaScript is disabled, blocked, or fails to load; the README describes this as progressive enhancement. The helper can improve the destination for visitors whose browsers run it, while the page still contains an ordinary link as a fallback. That distinction matters for both reliability and accessibility: regional routing should enhance the link, not be the only way to reach its destination.

Amazon Store addresses a specific publishing task: reducing repeated country-specific link markup while giving visitors a way to reach a regional store. Its region choice is an inference, and the manual store grid is the practical correction when that inference misses. The project materials do not establish a conversion lift, revenue increase, number of sales redirected, or guaranteed affiliate credit, so those outcomes should not be assumed.
