How AI Workloads Change Mainframe Networking and Data Movement

AI on a mainframe can keep some inference close to transactional data, while generative workloads may still need accelerators, storage access, and hybrid-cloud connectivity.

AI changes mainframe networking by changing where computation happens—and therefore which data needs to move. For inference tied to transactions, processing near mainframe data can reduce the need to copy every transaction or feature set to a separate AI system. Larger generative workloads may instead need extra accelerator capacity and continued access to documents, storage, users, and hybrid-cloud services. The result is not “no network traffic,” but a different mix of data paths to plan for.

Why AI changes the data path

A conventional arrangement can send transaction data from the mainframe to a separate inference service, then return a score or decision. That path can add data movement and may introduce latency, integration work, and extra handling of sensitive records. If inference runs near the transaction and its data, some of that export path may be avoided.

That is an architectural possibility, not a guaranteed result. Whether data movement falls depends on where the model, features, application, and records actually reside. An on-platform model may still need data from storage or other systems, and applications still need to communicate with clients and services.

What Telum II changes for transactional inference

Inference close to transaction flows

IBM positions the Telum II on-chip AI coprocessor for inference within transaction processing, including small language models with fewer than 8 billion parameters. IBM describes this placement as a way to reduce latency and run inference where data resides; those are design goals, not independent measurements of the outcome for every application. See IBM’s z17 product data sheet.

For a transaction system, the practical question is whether a model can use the data already available in the transaction flow and return its result in the required time. If so, an architecture may avoid exporting each record or feature set to a separate inference environment. It does not follow that every model, prompt, or input can be handled this way, or that sensitive information automatically stays on the mainframe: data placement and application design determine that.

A DPU aimed at I/O protocols

IBM says the Telum II data processing unit (DPU) is engineered to accelerate complex input/output protocols for networking and storage on the mainframe. This describes the component’s intended role; it is not a published, general-purpose network-performance result. The DPU changes an I/O path intended to handle data more efficiently, but the effect on an application depends on its network design, storage layout, connectivity, and workload.

When generative AI needs a different path

Transactional inference and generative AI are not interchangeable workload shapes. A transaction-scoring model may consume a compact set of features close to the transaction. An assistant, document-processing system, or information-search application may need to work over larger bodies of unstructured data, such as text.

IBM describes Spyre as additional AI compute for generative use cases involving unstructured data. IBM Redbooks examples include assistants, document processing, information search, and extraction, including deployments that keep data on-platform. The deployment examples do not mean that network access disappears: users, documents, storage systems, external services, or hybrid-cloud components may remain part of the workflow. IBM’s z17 announcement said general availability began June 18, 2025, and expected Spyre availability from Q4 2025. That announcement is a dated statement, not confirmation of a particular configuration’s availability today; verify supported options for the target system and deployment.

Which mainframe connectivity areas matter?

The IBM Z Connectivity Handbook, updated July 9, 2026 following a July 7 hardware announcement, covers the connection areas below. The handbook abstract identifies these categories but does not provide enough detail on its own to select a configuration. Treat the table as a way to frame design questions, not as a topology recommendation.

Connectivity area Why it enters an AI data-movement plan Question to resolve
Fibre Channel Part of the connectivity picture when AI applications depend on storage access. Where are the input data and model-related files stored, and what storage path and I/O demand does the workload require?
IBM zHyperLink Express A connectivity option listed in the handbook for planning alongside other system links. Does the workload’s latency need and supported target configuration make this option relevant?
IBM Open Systems Adapter and Network Express Adapter Network-adapter categories to consider for communication with connected systems and services. What traffic must cross the system boundary, and what bandwidth, coexistence, and operational constraints apply?
Shared Memory Communications A communications area to evaluate when planning application data exchange. Which endpoints and software configuration need to communicate, and is the option supported for them?
HiperSockets A connectivity category for planning communication within the system environment. Which system components need to exchange data, and what topology and security controls fit?
Coupling links and common time Relevant to planning coordinated systems and their interactions. Does the workload span systems, and what coordination, timing, and distance needs follow?
Extended-distance solutions Relevant when connected resources or systems are separated by distance. What distance, latency, and resilience requirements must the design meet?
Cryptographic connectivity Part of the security planning around data moving between systems and services. What data-protection requirements apply to each path, and where must encryption or cryptographic services be provided?

For any of these choices, confirm compatibility against the actual machine configuration and the application’s supported topology. The right design depends on data-path purpose, latency sensitivity, bandwidth and I/O demand, distance, existing-system coexistence, and security and operational requirements.

How to interpret IBM’s throughput figures

IBM reported up to 450 billion inference operations per day at 1 millisecond response time for z17. IBM says this figure was extrapolated from internal testing with a synthetic credit-card fraud-detection model, one inference thread, batch size 160, and identified LPAR configurations; results may vary. It is not a general-purpose workload guarantee. IBM’s z17 announcement also reported up to 300 billion inference requests per day at 1 millisecond for z16, based on a different configuration and extrapolated internal testing with a synthetic fraud model. These figures are not a controlled, general benchmark comparison and should not be used to predict an individual system’s network performance.

What to decide before changing the network

  • Map the data path: identify where transaction records, features, models, documents, and inference results are produced, stored, and consumed.
  • Separate workload types: determine which inference belongs close to transaction processing and which workloads need additional accelerator capacity or broader unstructured-data access.
  • Measure the actual constraint: distinguish model execution time from storage I/O, network transfer, application integration, and cross-system coordination.
  • Keep necessary connections in scope: account for users, storage, external services, and hybrid-cloud components even when inference runs on-platform.
  • Validate the target topology: use the current connectivity handbook and confirm exact feature support and compatibility for the target machine before selecting links or adapters.

The central design shift is selective data locality: keep suitable transactional inference close to its data where that meets the workload’s needs, while planning explicit paths for larger AI workloads and their surrounding systems. That can reduce particular exports, but it does not eliminate the need to design and secure the network.
