AI tutoring apps can help students work through a problem when they get stuck, but they are not proven replacements for teachers or human tutors. Two recent school trials report math gains from carefully designed AI-supported instruction, while also showing why results depend on how the tools are used. The evidence is promising, but narrow: it does not establish that every tutoring app, subject, or student will benefit.
What makes an AI tutoring app different from a chatbot?
A general chatbot is often optimized to respond to a prompt. A tutoring experience is meant to help a learner reach an answer, not simply hand one over. It may ask a guiding question, break a task into steps, explain a concept in another way, or offer practice aligned with course material. That distinction matters: a fluent answer can sound convincing without helping a student understand or remember the underlying skill.

Khanmigo, Khan Academy’s AI tutor and teaching assistant, is designed around guided discovery and Khan Academy content. Its teacher tools include lesson planning, learning objectives, rubrics, and summaries of student work. For learners under 18, Khan Academy’s product information describes family access as parent-supervised; classroom use is through school or district implementation. Eligibility and pricing can change, so check the current Khanmigo product page and FAQ before choosing it.
Google’s August 2026 announcement describes a classroom update to Khanmigo using Gemini reasoning to create interactive math and science visuals. Its teacher-controlled practice tool lets educators provide source materials, review and edit or reject generated questions, and approve an assignment before students receive it. Google reported early engagement signals, not a measured learning-outcome result for these new features. Google’s announcement explains the classroom tools.

Gemini Guided Learning is another example of a tutoring-oriented experience, but its strongest evidence here comes from a specific teacher-led school trial in Sierra Leone—not from all Gemini use or independent, self-directed study.
Are AI tutoring apps actually helping students learn?
Two 2026 evaluations provide encouraging but not interchangeable evidence. One tested Khan Academy practice with Khanmigo coaching in U.S. middle-school remedial math sessions; the other evaluated Gemini Guided Learning in teacher-led junior-secondary math classes in Sierra Leone. Their different learners, settings, durations, and implementations mean their results should not be treated as a head-to-head product comparison.

What students did with the tools matters
In the Tennessee trial, 96% of students tried Khanmigo at least once, but the median student messaged it on only a third of practice days and in 17% of exercise sessions where they made a mistake. Those are trial-specific usage figures, not typical adoption rates for AI tutors generally. They help explain why access alone did not guarantee sustained use.

Why the results do not settle the question
Google DeepMind reports larger gains in classrooms where teachers integrated Gemini into about half their lessons, toward a 12-hour target. It also reports that students who entered the study stronger benefited most, which raises an equity question: tools that work well for confident learners may not automatically close gaps for students who need the most support. Both findings are specific to the Sierra Leone trial and should not be generalized to every classroom.
The OECD’s January 2026 Digital Education Outlook characterized evidence on generative AI’s instructional effectiveness as emerging and mixed. Its chapter said no published Khanmigo effectiveness studies were available when it was written; that statement predates the August 2026 NBER working paper and is not a current summary of the evidence.

Can an AI tutor replace a human tutor for your child?
Not on the evidence available. An AI tutor can offer guided practice and explanations at the moment a learner is stuck, but the trials above evaluated technology within school instruction, with defined subject matter and adult or teacher involvement. They do not establish that an app can independently diagnose a child’s needs, provide reliable support across ages and subjects, or replace the judgment and relationship of a human tutor.

In practice, a parent or teacher can check whether the explanation matches the course, notice when a student is stuck in a loop, and help distinguish a confident-sounding mistake from a sound solution.

Treat an AI tutor as a support for practice, not the authority on what a child should learn. If the child needs encouragement, tailored diagnosis, accountability, or help with a persistent misunderstanding, adult guidance remains important.
How should you compare AI tutoring apps?
There is no evidence here for a defensible universal “best app” ranking. The available evaluations do not compare a representative range of products under the same conditions. Instead, assess the fit between a particular learner, course, and tool:

- Subject and age: Does it support the learner’s current subject and level, and is the intended use suitable for the child’s age?
- Teaching behavior: Does it guide the student with questions and hints, or mainly provide completed answers? Try a representative problem and observe whether the learner can explain the reasoning afterward.
- Course alignment: Is the tutor grounded in the class’s curriculum or a content library, or does the student have to supply context each time?
- Adult oversight: Can a parent or teacher review activity, control assignments, or correct generated material? Do not assume that features available in a school implementation are included in family access.
- Access needs: Check language support, accessibility features, device and connectivity requirements, and geographic eligibility before relying on the service.
- Cost and access: Confirm current price, eligibility, and whether the relevant features are available in your region and account type directly with the provider.
- Evidence quality: Look for who was studied, how long the evaluation lasted, what students actually did, what outcome was measured, and whether the result came from an independent evaluation or a company’s own report.
How to use an AI tutor without mistaking activity for learning
- Choose a concrete skill. Use the tool for a defined task, such as understanding a particular algebra step, rather than open-ended screen time.
- Ask for coaching, not the answer. Prompt it to give one hint or ask a guiding question at a time. If it reveals the solution, have the student close it and solve a similar problem independently.
- Check the explanation. Compare important facts and methods with class notes, a textbook, or the teacher’s instructions. If answers conflict, ask the teacher rather than assuming the AI is right.
- Test retention away from the app. Have the learner explain the idea in their own words or complete a fresh problem without help. Usage time and conversation counts do not by themselves demonstrate mastery.
- Involve an adult when progress stalls. Repeated wrong answers, confusion, or frustration are signs to pause and get help from a parent, teacher, or tutor instead of continuing to prompt the app.
