AI smart glasses do not all handle data the same way. In the documented Ray-Ban Meta example, a visual question starts when the wearer speaks a request: the glasses capture a photo, speech recognition turns the words into text, and the image and text are sent to an AI model to produce an answer. Some basic functions may run on the glasses; Meta says more advanced AI uses cloud computing. That distinction matters: a photo stored in a glasses gallery is not necessarily the same data flow as a visual AI request.
What happens when you ask a visual question?
Meta’s description of its AI glasses provides a concrete example, not a universal blueprint for every manufacturer. For a visual question, the wearer invokes the assistant with a spoken request, such as asking about something in view. The glasses capture a photo; speech recognition converts the request into text; then the captured image and text are passed to the AI model. The model combines the inputs to generate a response, which Meta says can reach the wearer through the glasses’ speakers and the accompanying app.

This means a request can involve more than the words spoken aloud. The image supplies context about what the wearer is asking about, while the recognized text supplies the question or instruction. Meta describes multimodal AI systems as taking in information such as text, images, video, and audio, combining relevant inputs, and generating an output. That is a high-level account from the company’s system documentation, not an independent technical audit of every processing step.
The request, in sequence
- Invocation: The wearer asks the assistant for help. Meta’s example uses a spoken wake phrase and request. Meta says voice controls can be turned off; available settings may vary.
- Capture and transcription: The glasses take a photo for the visual request, and speech recognition converts the spoken words to text.
- Model input: The captured image and recognized text are passed to the AI model, which uses them together to formulate an answer.
- Response: The result can be delivered in the app and through the glasses’ speakers.
Those steps describe the visual-assistant interaction documented by Meta. They do not establish what another brand captures, whether a different product uses a wake phrase, or what a particular model retains after responding. Feature behavior can also depend on the glasses model, software version, settings, and location.

Which processing happens on the glasses, and which happens in the cloud?
There is no single processing location for everything an AI glasses product does. Meta Engineering says many basic commands—such as placing a call or answering a text hands-free—can happen entirely on the device. It says advanced AI features require models too large to run on the glasses and therefore use cloud computing. A local action and a cloud-based AI request can coexist in the same product.
This is why neither “the glasses always send everything to the cloud” nor “everything stays on the glasses” is a reliable general description. The first overstates what happens to all functions; the second ignores the cloud processing Meta describes for advanced AI. The important question is which feature is being used and what data that feature requires. A hands-free call command, a spoken question about an image, and importing a photo into a phone are distinct actions and may follow different paths.
Meta’s Private Processing announcement
On 23 September 2026, Meta announced Private Processing for its AI glasses. Meta describes the design as using confidential virtual machines intended to prevent the company from accessing data while it is being processed. This is a vendor description of a privacy design, not an independently verified guarantee about deployment or every request. The announcement should not be read as evidence that all AI functions are local, that no information reaches cloud infrastructure, or that every model and region has identical availability.

When assessing another glasses product, look for feature-specific information rather than relying on a general privacy label. The useful questions are whether voice commands and image questions are handled locally or remotely, what exact inputs leave the device, how long requests are retained, and whether data may be used beyond providing the requested response. If documentation does not answer those questions, do not assume the most privacy-protective interpretation.
Are photos and videos automatically uploaded?
Meta’s July 2026 product FAQ says gallery photos and videos remain stored privately on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone. The wearer chooses whether to share those gallery items or use Meta AI. This statement concerns gallery captures; it is not a blanket explanation of every AI request, cloud-processing feature, or later sharing action.

The distinction is practical. A photo that sits in a device gallery and an image submitted as part of a visual AI request are different contexts. The gallery statement alone does not prove that an image used for an AI response stays only on the glasses, because Meta separately describes cloud processing for advanced AI. Nor does that establish that every ordinary gallery photo is uploaded automatically. Check the product’s explanation of the particular feature and action you are using.
For any model, trace the sequence that applies to your use: capture, viewing or editing, import to a phone, an AI request, and any later sharing. One step does not automatically tell you what happens at the others. In particular, a user’s choice to share an item, ask an assistant to analyze it, or sync it through an app can change the data flow.

What personal information can voice and images reveal?
A glasses camera can capture more than the object at the center of a question. Images and audio may identify other people or reveal their surroundings, actions, conversations, or presence in a sensitive place. Even when the wearer’s intent is simply to ask about something they see, people nearby can become part of the recorded material or the context of a request.
The Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner warns that camera- and microphone-equipped wearables can process third-party data and that discreet smart glasses increase the risk that people are recorded or their data transmitted without their knowledge. It advises users to consider local law and inform affected people. The authority’s guidance is a useful privacy warning, not a substitute for the law where a particular recording occurs.
Recording indicators are notice, not consent
Meta says a white capture LED blinks briefly when a photo is taken and shines continuously during video capture. It also says covering or disabling the light automatically disables the camera. Meta’s responsible-use guidance recommends asking people nearby before capturing and avoiding sensitive locations or places where people expect privacy.

An indicator can alert someone who notices it, but it does not guarantee that everyone nearby sees or understands it. Its presence alone does not establish consent or resolve whether a recording is lawful. For the wearer, the safer practice is to avoid capturing people who have not agreed, particularly in private or sensitive settings, and to stop if someone objects.
What controls does Meta describe?
Meta says its AI app offers preferences for captures, voice, and notifications, and controls for information shared with Meta. Its responsible-innovation guidance says users can delete voice recordings and that information deleted by the user will not be used for future training. Meta’s system card says deleting media from the gallery also deletes it from Meta’s cloud. These are descriptions of the company’s controls and deletion behavior; the exact options available can depend on the model, software, account, and location.
Before relying on a control, confirm what it applies to. Deleting a gallery item, deleting a voice recording, changing a capture preference, and disabling a feature are not interchangeable actions. The available statements do not establish that deleting one kind of data deletes every associated transcript, AI request, or copy in every context. Read the current in-app explanation for the specific data type and action.
A practical privacy check before using a feature
- Review the app’s current capture, voice, notification, and shared-information preferences.
- Check whether the feature you plan to use is processed locally or needs a cloud service, and what inputs it sends.
- Look for the product’s explanation of retention, deletion, and any use of data beyond generating the requested response.
- Review app permissions and decline access that is not needed for the feature you want.
- Use the capture indicator as a prompt to be considerate, not as a substitute for informing people or checking local requirements.
The Swiss authority specifically advises users to understand where wearable data is processed and whether it may be used beyond providing the requested service. It also recommends checking app permissions and refusing unnecessary access. These checks are particularly useful when an app requests access to data or device features that seem unrelated to the task.

There is no universal consent rule that applies to every country, setting, purpose, or later use of a recording. The examples below show why it is important to consult the relevant local authority rather than assume that a rule from one jurisdiction applies everywhere. They are specific statements by government authorities, not legal advice for an individual situation.

| Jurisdiction and source | What the authority said | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore, Ministry of Digital Development and Information, parliamentary response dated 6 May 2026 | The PDPA generally does not require consent for photography or recording in public spaces. | Organizations still need a reasonable purpose for subsequent use or disclosure, including use for AI features, and must comply with other laws. The response also notes that non-consensual recording, sharing, or misuse of intimate or private content may be criminal. |
| Hamburg, Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, announcement dated 10 September 2026 | After examining Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 1, the authority concluded that recording people outside a close circle of friends and family would generally not be permissible under its assessment, except in rare legitimate-interest cases. | The authority cited the practical inability to obtain informed consent because of a lack of transparency, and concluded that there would typically be no legal basis for Meta AI training. This was an assessment of that model and legal context, not a ruling for all glasses or jurisdictions. |
The two positions address different legal contexts and should not be collapsed into a single rule. Whether an image may be captured, whether it may be shared, and whether it may be used for AI can raise separate questions. A recording in public does not automatically make every later use permissible, as Singapore’s response makes clear; Hamburg’s review illustrates how a regulator may assess the transparency and legal basis of recording and training in a particular setting.
How to evaluate a pair of AI glasses before using its assistant
Product marketing often emphasizes what an assistant can do, but the privacy-relevant details are feature-specific. Use the documentation for the exact model and current software, and verify that the information applies in your location. Compare these points before enabling voice or image features:
- Processing location: Find out which commands run on the device and which require cloud computing.
- Inputs: Determine whether the feature sends a voice recording, transcript, image, video, or a combination.
- Storage and retention: Separate gallery storage from AI requests, app imports, and shared files; look for what triggers upload and how long each category is kept.
- Model improvement: Check whether requests or recordings can be used beyond providing the service, and what controls apply.
- User controls: Confirm how to adjust voice and capture preferences, remove stored items, and manage information shared with the provider.
- Bystander notice: Learn what signals a capture and what the manufacturer advises the wearer to do around other people.
- Availability: Confirm that the feature and its privacy controls apply to the model, software version, account, and country you actually use.
For Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Meta’s official materials answer some of these questions: they describe the image-plus-transcript flow for a visual request, a division between basic on-device functions and advanced cloud AI, gallery behavior, and several user controls. Those details should be treated as product-specific and checked against current documentation rather than generalized to AI glasses as a category.
Sources and what they establish
Meta’s official system card, Multimodal generative AI systems, describes how it says the visual request is captured, transcribed, sent to a model, and answered. Its July 2026 FAQ, Meta’s AI Glasses: Your Questions Answered, covers gallery storage and the capture indicator. Meta’s Responsible Innovation in AI Glasses & Quest describes preferences, deletion, and responsible-use guidance. Meta Engineering’s 23 September 2026 post, Bringing Private Processing to Meta AI Glasses, explains the company’s announced cloud privacy design.
