But it has not replaced conventional search: Shopify says organic search still sends more sessions to storefronts than all tracked AI platforms combined. The practical shift for merchants is to treat conversational discovery and accurate product data as growing channels, while measuring their results carefully.
What AI search changes in the shopping journey
Traditional product search usually starts with keywords and a list of links. AI shopping tools can start with a description of what someone needs, ask follow-up questions, and narrow options using constraints such as budget or preferences. Some also support visual browsing or side-by-side comparisons.

That can move more consideration into the discovery interface itself: the shopper may compare products before visiting a retailer. In some implementations, checkout can also happen through the platform. These are separate steps, however. Better product discovery does not automatically mean a system can purchase autonomously or that every retailer is available for checkout.
OpenAI’s November 24, 2025 announcement described a ChatGPT shopping-research flow in which a shopper explains their needs, answers clarifying questions, and receives options with trade-offs based on current online information. That is a description of the announced experience, not independent proof that recommendations are always complete or error-free.

How the major shopping experiences differ
The platforms describe overlapping goals but different routes from discovery to purchase. Their announcements establish what each says its own systems support; they do not show that one approach has won or that all merchants have the same access.
| Experience | Discovery and comparison | Product data and checkout |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI’s March 24, 2026 announcement describes conversational refinement, visual browsing, and side-by-side product comparisons. Its November 24, 2025 announcement describes a guided shopping-research flow. | OpenAI says merchants can share product feeds and promotions through ACP, and that Shopify Catalog product data is integrated into ChatGPT. OpenAI named Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe’s, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Wayfair as integrated into ACP for discovery at the time of its March 2026 announcement. That announcement does not establish checkout availability for every named retailer. |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Google describes conversational shopping discovery, including brainstorming, questions, and photos, in its 2026 commerce update. | Google says UCP is designed to connect commerce across discovery, decision, and checkout. Its 2026 update said UCP-powered checkout was rolling out to US shoppers buying from Etsy and Wayfair in AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app; Shopify, Target, and Walmart were described as coming soon in that update. Rollout status can change. |
| Amazon Alexa for Shopping | Amazon frames its shopping AI tools around finding, discovering, and evaluating products. | Amazon’s article says Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. The cited description does not state a separate checkout protocol or a rollout comparison with the other platforms. |
Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), as described by Sundar Pichai on January 11, 2026, is an open, agnostic protocol developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, with more than 20 additional organizations endorsing it. Google says it is intended to support commerce across discovery, decision, and checkout. A protocol designed for interoperability is not proof that integrations are universal or that competing platforms use the same standard.

What the growth numbers do—and do not—show
Shopify’s Q1 2026 analysis reports that referral sessions from AI chatbots to Shopify storefronts grew more than 8 times year over year, while AI-referred orders grew nearly 13 times. Despite that growth, Shopify says organic search still sent more sessions than all tracked AI platforms combined.
Shopify also reports that, in Q1 2026, AI-referred visitors whose sessions began on a product detail page converted at nearly 50% higher rates than organic-search visitors in the same entry-page cohort. It found AI-referred conversion outperformed organic SEO in 23 of 25 merchant categories, with an average 56% advantage within those categories. AI-referred orders had a 14% higher average order value than organic-search orders. These are Shopify’s reported results for its measured storefronts and period, not a forecast or a guaranteed outcome for an individual retailer.
Rank #3
Attribution is incomplete: Shopify notes that some AI-assisted discovery, including discovery through AI Overviews, may be counted as organic in standard analytics. So tracked AI referrals are not a complete measure of AI’s influence, and the reported channel comparisons depend on how sessions are classified.
Salesforce’s September 30, 2026 release says agentic search as the first step in the shopping journey grew 200% year over year. Its Fourth Edition State of Commerce report surveyed 3,450 commerce professionals, including 100 from Singapore, and cites activity from 1.5 billion shoppers across global commerce sites. This is a different study and population from Shopify’s storefront referral analysis; the figures should not be combined as if they measured the same thing.
Together, the numbers support a change in entry points and rapid growth from a smaller base. They do not establish that AI search has increased or reduced total ecommerce traffic or revenue across retailers, nor that it has displaced conventional search.

What merchants should do now
Make product information dependable
Keep product titles, descriptions, prices, availability, variants, and promotions accurate in the commerce systems that feed discovery platforms. OpenAI explicitly describes merchant product feeds, promotions, and Shopify Catalog integration; Google describes UCP as a way for businesses to connect with agents across discovery and checkout. These are platform-specific paths, not a universal requirement. Poor or stale catalog information can undermine the usefulness of a recommendation even when a product is eligible to appear.
Best Value
Measure discovery beyond last-click referrals
- Track AI-referred sessions and orders separately where analytics tools allow it.
- Document which sources your analytics classifies as organic, since some AI-assisted visits may be included there.
- Compare product-page entry, conversion, and average order value by channel, and preserve the period, cohort, and attribution method in reports.
- Use the same definitions over time; a change in tagging or referral classification can look like a channel shift even when shopper behavior has not changed.
Evaluate platforms on operational details
When deciding where to invest, compare the things that affect your catalog and customer experience, not broad claims that a platform has “won”:
- Which products and variants are represented, and how often their information is refreshed.
- How merchants can provide product data and promotions, and what control they retain over those details.
- Whether shoppers can refine needs, compare options, or use visual discovery.
- Where checkout happens, which regions and retailers are included, and whether the current integration is live or only announced.
- Whether a protocol supports the integrations you need, and how performance can be attributed in your analytics.
Do not assume that a particular wording trick, schema change, or tool guarantees placement in an AI answer. The platform announcements and measurement reports described here do not establish a guaranteed visibility formula.
Is ecommerce being transformed already?
The clearest evidence is a channel shift in progress: conversational interfaces are expanding product discovery, reported AI referrals are growing quickly, and some platforms are connecting discovery to checkout. Conventional search remains a major source of visits, while the overall effect on ecommerce traffic and revenue is not established by the available measurements. Merchants can prepare by maintaining reliable catalog data and measuring emerging sources without treating early channel results as universal.
