How AI Podcast Apps Choose Sources and Generate Episodes

AI podcast episodes reflect their source material and settings. Compare Gemini Notebook Audio Overview, ElevenLabs GenFM, and Google’s separate Enterprise APIs.

AI podcast apps build an episode from material and controls a user supplies; they do not automatically represent everything known about a subject. The source set determines what the episode can draw on, while settings such as format, language, length, and a focus prompt steer how that material is presented. Two documented workflows illustrate different levels of control: Gemini Notebook Audio Overview and ElevenLabs GenFM.

What determines what an AI-generated episode says?

Start with the sources. An AI-generated podcast is a presentation made from selected inputs, not a guarantee of comprehensive coverage. If the source set leaves out an important perspective, fact, or update, the episode may leave it out too. Google describes Notebook Audio Overviews as reflecting the sources uploaded to a notebook rather than offering a comprehensive or objective account of the broader topic. That qualification applies to this documented feature; these two products do not establish how every AI podcast app works.

Then consider the instructions and generation settings. A focus prompt can direct the hosts toward particular topics or an intended level of expertise. Format and duration influence whether the output is a discussion, a short bulletin, or a longer treatment. Language and voice settings shape delivery, but they do not correct missing or weak source material.

A useful prompt resembles the interface question documented for these workflows: “What should the AI hosts focus on in this episode?” Make it specific enough to guide emphasis, but do not treat it as a substitute for choosing good sources. For example, if a notebook contains several documents about a policy, you might ask the hosts to explain the arguments for and against it. The generated discussion can only reflect what its supplied materials support.

How the documented workflows compare

Control Gemini Notebook Audio Overview ElevenLabs GenFM
Sources Sources uploaded to a notebook; the consumer help page describes the notebook as the working collection. Uploaded EPUB, PDF, TXT, HTML, DOCX, XML, or FDX file; a URL; or an existing project.
Source selection Consumer workflow generates from the notebook’s sources. The separate Enterprise API accepts source IDs and, if none are supplied, uses all notebook sources. Choose material or a project for the generation workflow; the cited help page does not describe individual source-ID selection.
Episode and focus controls Deep Dive, Brief, Critique, or Debate; focus prompt; output language; English-only Shorter, Default, or Longer length. Host-and-guest conversation or single-host bulletin; short, default, or long duration; focus topics or AI topic selection.
Voices and language AI-generated voices; output language choice. The help page says Audio Overviews support 80+ languages. Suggested or custom voices; detected or chosen language.
Review before audio Consumer help describes generated audio and playback controls; it does not describe an equivalent script-editing stage. Text is generated first and can be inspected and edited before it is converted to audio.
Output and sharing Play, share a link, share the notebook, or download audio, subject to account access and source restrictions. Export the reviewed script to generate downloadable audio.

This is a comparison of the documented workflows, not a market ranking. Neither the cited help pages nor the API pages establish prices or current free-plan quotas, so those are not compared here.

  1. Create or open a notebook and add the material. Choose sources relevant to the question you want the episode to address. The notebook source set is the foundation of the generated discussion.
  2. Open Studio and choose Audio Overview. Select the kind of episode that fits the task. Deep Dive uses two hosts to discuss and connect topics. Brief is a single-speaker summary of key takeaways under two minutes. Critique has two hosts offer constructive evaluation. Debate presents a formal exchange of perspectives.
  3. Set the output language and length where available. Google’s current Help page says Audio Overviews can be generated in more than 80 languages. Shorter, Default, and Longer length settings are available in English only. The language count and controls are features documented by Google, not a claim that each language produces identical results.
  4. Enter a focus prompt. Direct attention toward specific topics or adjust the level of expertise you want the discussion to assume. A narrow prompt can help prioritize relevant material, but it cannot add evidence that is absent from the notebook.
  5. Generate and listen. Generation happens in the background and can take a couple of minutes. The notebook’s source material remains available while the audio plays, so a listener can return to the underlying materials for quotations, citations, or follow-up exploration.
  6. Share or save the result if appropriate. The documented choices include sharing an audio link, sharing the notebook, or downloading the audio. Access and source restrictions apply. Public notebook sharing is documented for consumer accounts and is disabled for Workspace Enterprise and Education accounts.

Google’s original September 11, 2024 launch announcement described two AI hosts connecting and summarizing material, but its launch-era details should not be mistaken for current controls: at launch the feature spoke only English and could not be interrupted. For current availability and settings, Google’s Help page is the more relevant reference. The launch article remains useful for its explicit scope warning: the generated exchange reflects uploaded sources rather than providing a comprehensive or objective view of the topic. ElevenLabs GenFM: generating, editing, then exporting

GenFM follows a text-first workflow in Studio. A user supplies a supported file, a URL, or an existing project, then chooses how the material should be presented. Its main practical distinction from the consumer Notebook description is that GenFM documents a reviewable, editable script before audio generation. ElevenLabs GenFM Help

  1. Open GenFM in Studio and provide source material. The documented file types are EPUB, PDF, TXT, HTML, DOCX, XML, and FDX. A URL or existing project is also supported.
  2. Choose the presentation format. Select a host-and-guest conversation for a dialogue or a shorter single-host bulletin for a concise presentation.
  3. Set the duration, voice, and language. Choose short, default, or long duration; select a suggested voice or configure custom voices; and use the detected language or choose one.
  4. Guide topic selection. Provide focus topics if the episode needs to emphasize particular parts of the material, or leave topic selection to the AI.
  5. Review and edit the generated text. Check names, figures, claims, emphasis, and transitions against the source. Correct the script before generating audio if wording or factual precision matters.
  6. Export the script to generate downloadable audio. If you already have a finished script and want it narrated rather than transformed into a generated podcast script, the documentation recommends using a new empty audio project or audiobook narration instead.

That editable stage gives a creator a clear opportunity to intervene in wording before voices are generated. It is not a guarantee that every factual issue will be caught: editorial review still depends on comparing the draft with its inputs.

Google’s Enterprise APIs are separate from the consumer app

Google also documents Enterprise routes for notebook sources and audio generation. These are API workflows for developers and organizations, not alternate names for the consumer app interface. In particular, NotebookLM Enterprise’s notebook audio-overview API is marked Preview. Its documentation says generation takes a few minutes, a notebook can have one overview at a time, and a generated overview can be played, downloaded, or deleted. A request may include source IDs, an episode-focus string, and a language code; omitting source IDs means the API uses all sources in that notebook. Notebook audio-overview API documentation

The Enterprise source API documents Google Docs, Google Slides, raw text, web content, YouTube videos, and uploaded PDF, TXT, Markdown, DOCX, PPTX, and XLSX files. It supports adding sources singly or in batches and tracks them with source IDs. The source API page is marked Preview and shows an update date of October 7, 2026. These API capabilities should not be assumed to be the same as the set of source options shown in the consumer app. Google Cloud source API documentation

There is also a distinct standalone Google Cloud Podcast API. It is not the notebook-bound Audio Overview API. The standalone API page marks it deprecated and says Google is not allowlisting new customers, so it is not a sound default for a new integration while that notice remains in place. Its documentation describes context input as text, images, audio, or video, with a limit below 100,000 tokens, and MP3 output. It lists short and standard lengths with typical durations of approximately four to five minutes and around ten minutes, respectively; these are documentation estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. How to check whether an episode is trustworthy

Generated audio is a convenient way to explore supplied material, but it should not be treated as an authoritative transcript of reality. Google warns that Audio Overviews and their voices may contain inaccuracies or audio glitches. It also cautions that the discussion reflects the provided sources rather than a comprehensive or objective account. Google’s current Audio Overview guidance

  • Audit the inputs first. Include primary or otherwise reliable materials, check that they address the question, and notice which viewpoints or dates are missing.
  • Make the prompt a focus, not a conclusion. Ask for comparison, explanation, or a particular audience level; avoid prompting the hosts to assert a result that the sources do not establish.
  • Verify consequential claims against originals. Check dates, names, quotations, numbers, and causal claims in the underlying source rather than relying on a spoken summary. Notebook sources can be revisited for quotations and citations.
  • Use script review when available. In GenFM, inspect and edit the generated text before exporting audio. For Gemini’s consumer workflow, the cited Help page documents playback and sharing but does not describe an equivalent script-editing step; that is a limit of what the page documents, not proof that editing is impossible in every context.
  • Distinguish generation quirks from source errors. A glitch in a voice or playback can affect listening without changing the source, while a plausible-sounding claim can still be inaccurate. Check both the audio’s delivery and its factual basis.

Google reported that daily Audio Overview creations doubled in the two weeks after expansion to more than 80 languages in April 2025. That is a company-reported usage figure, not an independent measurement of accuracy, quality, or adoption across the broader market. Google’s account of NotebookLM’s development

Choosing a workflow for the job

For a listener or learner who wants to explore a set of notebook sources, Gemini Notebook’s formats and ability to return to the source material alongside playback may fit the task. For a creator who needs to shape phrasing before voice generation, GenFM’s documented text-review stage offers a more explicit editorial checkpoint. For a developer, the relevant choice depends on whether the desired workflow is notebook-bound and whether the Preview status is acceptable; the separate standalone Podcast API has a deprecation notice and is not a recommended new-customer route.

In all three cases, source selection remains the central editorial decision. A polished two-host exchange can make selected material easier to follow, but it cannot make an incomplete input set complete. Choose sources deliberately, steer the output with a clear focus, and verify important statements before sharing an episode as fact.
