AI can contribute to more flexible IP-based media production, but no single AI standard makes a production facility vendor-independent. Interoperability depends on several layers working together: media transport, network discovery and control, workflow data exchange, facility operations, and AI-specific security and governance. Standards and industry initiatives address important parts of that stack; moving AI tools or their behavior freely between providers remains a separate, system-specific challenge.
What interoperability means in an IP media facility
IP-based production moves professional media through managed networks rather than relying solely on traditional point-to-point signal paths. The benefit is not automatic compatibility. A system needs ways to carry media, keep it synchronized, discover and connect equipment, coordinate workflows, and operate the facility as a whole.

These are related but distinct forms of interoperability. A device might exchange media correctly while its control system cannot discover it, or a production application might receive a signal but fail to interpret the associated workflow metadata. AI adds another set of questions: whether data and context can be moved, how models are governed, and what happens when a service is replaced.
| Layer | What it addresses | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Media transport | Carriage, timing, and description of audio, video, and data essence streams. | How equipment is discovered, how connections are managed, or whether applications share workflow data. |
| Network control and discovery | Finding available senders and receivers and managing connections across a network. | Consistent exchange of production, delivery, archive, or descriptive metadata. |
| Workflow data exchange | Application-level data and interfaces for tasks such as mastering, delivery, archive, contribution, and metadata management. | Facility-wide operational coordination or portability of AI models and their behavior. |
| Facility operations | Requirements and management approaches for bringing IP equipment online and operating a large-scale facility. | Plug-and-play compatibility across every device or a guarantee that every workflow will work without configuration. |
| AI governance | Risks, security, and management considerations for AI use. | That prompts, context, training data, outputs, or model behavior can be transferred unchanged between providers. |
How ST 2110 carries media over IP
SMPTE ST 2110 specifies the carriage, synchronization, and description of separate elementary essence streams for real-time production, playout, and related professional applications. Instead of treating a finished audio-video-data signal as one indivisible feed, it allows audio, video, and data to travel as separate streams. Each can be routed individually, while a shared timing reference supports synchronization.
#1 Best Overall
SMPTE describes the streams as individually timed and able to take different paths through a network to one or more receivers. Precision Time Protocol (PTP)-based clocks support synchronization. This separation is a foundation for flexible live and real-time production, but it addresses media transport—not every control, workflow, or AI portability requirement.
How NMOS and AMWA address coordination and workflows
Network discovery and connection management
On an ST 2110 network, equipment also needs to identify available sources and destinations and establish and manage connections. SMPTE describes those functions as addressed by AMWA’s Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS). In practical terms, transport standards and network coordination solve different problems: one carries the essence streams; the other helps systems find and connect the relevant endpoints.
Application and workflow data
AMWA’s specification portfolio also includes application, data-model, and interface specifications. Its stated use cases include mastering, delivery, archive, contribution, and metadata management. Those workflow concerns matter because exchanging a media stream does not ensure that separate applications interpret its associated information in the same way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy transport standards do not make a facility plug-and-play
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has described ST 2110 as necessary but insufficient for building and managing a large-scale IP facility. A facility still needs requirements and management approaches for bringing equipment online and operating it coherently. EBU TECH 3371, version 3, was updated in April 2023 and addresses facility-level considerations.

[New firmware] Welcome to follow up instruction manual to upgrade the firmware .RGBlink will continue to optimize its products to provide you with the best live-streaming experience
The practical distinction is important: conformance at one layer does not prove end-to-end compatibility. Before treating a system as interoperable, organizations need to consider the devices, network control, applications, metadata, and operational arrangements that make up the intended workflow.
What SMPTE’s AI guidance establishes—and what it does not
SMPTE Engineering Report ER 1011:2025 is an updated industry report, not a universal standard that makes AI services interchangeable. SMPTE describes it as a comprehensive revision of ER 1010:2023, with additional coverage of open-source, multimodal, and agentic AI, model risks and risk management, and security.

SMPTE Standards Director Thomas Bause Mason said: “The revision to the Engineering Report reflects new developments such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enhanced security considerations, open source in AI, and emerging frameworks like ISO/IEC 42001 among others.” The report’s coverage of these topics is useful context for organizations assessing AI use, but it does not establish that MCP, ISO/IEC 42001, or ST 2110 alone lets a production team change AI providers without rework.

AI portability involves details beyond media transport: whether prompts and context can be exported and reused, whether data and outputs remain accessible, how model behavior changes, and what security and governance controls apply. The cited industry material does not establish a general guarantee for transferring those elements unchanged between systems. Teams should assess them against the specific tools and workflows they intend to use.

What to check when assessing an AI-enabled IP workflow
Use these questions to separate a standards claim from an end-to-end portability claim. They are evaluation points, not evidence that a particular product or facility already meets them.
- Media: Which applicable ST 2110 streams and timing requirements do the devices support?
- Control: How are sources and destinations discovered, and how are connections established and managed?
- Workflow data: Can the applications exchange the production and descriptive metadata the workflow needs?
- Operations: What facility requirements, configuration, and management practices are needed to bring the components online?
- AI portability: Which prompts, context, inputs, outputs, and other relevant data can actually be exported and reused, and what changes when the model or provider changes?
- Governance and security: What risks, access controls, and management responsibilities apply to the AI components?
Dynamic Media Facility work is still developing
On September 13, 2025, AMWA and the EBU announced the Joint Task Force on Dynamic Media Facilities (JT-DMF), an initiative addressing software-based media production. Its initial areas of focus include timing models for the Media Exchange Layer SDK, a business-level advisory council, and orchestration challenges. The announcement describes work intended to facilitate the industry’s transition; it is not evidence of a completed interoperability guarantee.
