AI image generators can make slim, young, conventionally attractive and able-bodied people look like the default—not because those traits are neutral or universal, but because a model’s learned visual patterns and design choices help fill in details a prompt leaves unstated. Audits have found these patterns in some systems, and one experiment found a short-term drop in body satisfaction after participants viewed AI-generated influencer images. Neither finding means every generator behaves alike or every viewer will be affected.
How a prompt becomes an image
At a high level, a text-to-image system associates words with visual features and assembles likely features into an image in response to a prompt. The process is not simply a camera following instructions: the prompt steers the result, while learned associations and product design also shape what appears.

Providers may use different training material, added model components, aesthetic or specialist tuning, and moderation. Moderation can influence both what material informs a model and which generated results are blocked. The exact pipeline varies by system, so no single account describes every image generator.
The prompt leaves gaps; the model fills them
A brief request such as “a person at work” does not specify body size, age, disability, expression, clothing, pose or lighting. The model supplies those missing details using patterns it has learned and design choices that steer its outputs. If certain appearances recur more often in relevant material or are favored during product shaping, they may be more likely to appear when the prompt is silent.

That helps explain how an idealized body can seem like the ordinary or realistic choice. Scholar Aisha Sobey uses the term “normate” for a socially produced standard treated as the unmarked default. In everyday terms, it is the appearance a system presents as simply “a person,” while other bodies require extra specification.
What studies have found
The findings below concern particular models, prompts and participants. They identify patterns worth examining, not a universal rate for all generated images or a prediction for every viewer.

Prompting for inclusion does not settle the question
In Sobey’s audit, explicitly requesting larger bodies changed which bodies appeared, but the images also differed in expression and visible quality. That matters: representation is not only whether a body is present, but also how it is portrayed and whether the output is handled as well as other depictions. The study does not establish a prompt formula that reliably produces inclusive, high-quality results.

Disclosure is not the same as changing the image
In the 2026 experiment, telling participants that the influencer images were AI-generated did not prevent the observed decline in body satisfaction. The authors summarized their result this way: “The findings of this study demonstrate that viewing AI-generated images of influencers negatively impacts body image regardless of whether the role of AI is known.” This is the authors’ conclusion about that experiment, not a universal law about AI images or an individual diagnosis.

Bias can appear beyond body size
UNESCO’s 2024 Outlook Study on Artificial Intelligence and Gender, reporting a Bloomberg analysis, gives a separate example of representational skew: 3% of AI-generated images prompted with “judge” depicted women, compared with 34% of judges in the United States. This concerns gender and occupation, not body type, but it illustrates how generated defaults can diverge from a real-world reference group.
How to examine a generator’s defaults
There is no defensible ranking of image generators in the findings summarized here. If you are assessing a system for a project, test its outputs rather than relying on a product description or one striking example.

- Record the conditions. Note the model and version if shown, the date, the exact prompt, the number of outputs, and any settings or moderation notices. A single image is not enough to establish a platform-wide pattern.
- Start with a brief prompt. Ask for a person without specifying body size or disability, then record which appearances the system supplies on its own.
- Compare with a specific prompt. Request a wider range of body sizes and disability representation. Keep other wording and settings as consistent as possible so you can see what changes.
- Check quality as well as presence. Compare expressions and visible errors or anomalies across the outputs. A requested body type appearing in the image does not by itself show that the depiction is equally positive or well formed.
- Repeat the comparison. Generate multiple outputs under the same conditions. Results can vary, and the cited audit does not establish that one prompt will work reliably across models.
These checks are useful for spotting patterns in a particular system and session, not a validated universal test. If the results matter for publication or a product, preserve the prompt and conditions so others can understand what was compared.

A generator’s output is not a neutral reference for what people look like, and slimness or being able-bodied should not be treated as a proxy for health or value. When a narrow set of appearances is easier to obtain than others—or when requested diversity comes with less positive expressions or more anomalies—the system may reinforce a visual hierarchy even without an explicit instruction to do so.

For viewers, the 2026 experiment is a reason to take exposure seriously, not to assume harm is inevitable. It measured short-term responses in one sample viewing one set of images; it does not diagnose an individual, establish long-term effects, or provide treatment advice.
