AI infrastructure is increasing demand for several kinds of memory and storage—not just high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Chipmakers report demand for HBM alongside conventional server DRAM and NAND, and they are responding with a mix of new fabrication capacity, cleanroom projects, process changes and advanced packaging. The important qualification is that company announcements show how manufacturers describe the trend and their plans; they do not measure how much of the entire memory market’s growth AI caused.
How AI infrastructure creates demand for memory
AI systems need chips that perform computation, but computation is only part of the infrastructure. Memory supplies data to processors, while storage holds data for systems and services to use. As companies expand AI training and inference across data centers, demand can rise for different products at different points in that infrastructure. Manufacturers’ recent disclosures link AI-related demand to HBM, server DRAM and NAND, although they do not quantify AI’s share of total demand growth.

The demand signal reaches manufacturers through customers ordering memory and storage for data-center and cloud deployments. It can affect both how much product companies aim to make and which products receive manufacturing capacity. Micron said in a 2026 SEC filing that it shifted some DRAM supply toward data-center and hyperscale-cloud markets during 2025, linking strong DRAM demand growth in part to AI advancement. That describes a change in product mix; it does not establish a quantified reduction in supply for consumer products.

HBM is a type of DRAM that manufacturers explicitly associate with AI applications. It is a high-value product, and producing it involves both memory manufacturing and back-end packaging. That combination helps explain why investment announcements about AI memory can include packaging plants and equipment as well as wafer fabrication facilities.

SK hynix reported that its HBM revenue more than doubled year over year in 2025. That is a company-reported revenue comparison, not a measure of industry-wide HBM shipments or the proportion of memory growth caused by AI. It nevertheless illustrates why manufacturers have made HBM a visible part of their capacity and product plans.
Server DRAM: demand beyond HBM
AI infrastructure also uses conventional DRAM in servers. SK hynix reported sharply increased conventional server-memory demand alongside HBM, and said its outlook included both HBM and server DRAM as AI use expands toward inference and distributed architectures. Samsung likewise described strong conventional DRAM demand in its FY2025 results. These disclosures matter because they show the demand story is broader than a single specialized memory product.
NAND and enterprise storage
NAND is a different memory technology from DRAM and is used in storage products, including solid-state drives. AI data centers need storage as well as processor-adjacent memory, so manufacturers have also connected NAND and AI-related storage products to the infrastructure build-out. SK hynix included NAND in its outlook; Samsung listed AI-related NAND among its 2026 priorities. Those statements support a demand link, but not a claim that every NAND sale or every storage upgrade is driven by AI.
What manufacturers have reported about demand and supply
Company disclosures provide evidence of what individual manufacturers are seeing and planning, but their statements are not independent measurements of the whole market. SK hynix said customer demand exceeded its supply capability in its Q2 2026 results. Samsung’s FY2025 release described limited supply availability. These are company assessments; they should not be read as a verified industry-wide shortage figure.

The reported business results show the scale of activity at individual companies, but do not isolate AI as the cause of revenue or profit. SK hynix reported FY2025 revenue of KRW 97.1467 trillion and operating profit of KRW 47.2063 trillion. In its Q2 2026 preliminary results, which the release said spoke as of July 29, 2026, it reported revenue of KRW 79,318.7 billion and operating profit of KRW 60,542.6 billion. These figures are company financial results, not a market-wide AI demand index.
Samsung said its memory business recorded high quarterly revenue and operating profit in Q4 2025 while facing limited supply availability, addressing strong conventional DRAM demand and expanding HBM sales. Its 2026 priorities included HBM4, DDR5, SOCAMM2, GDDR7 and AI-related NAND. The list indicates the breadth of products in its memory plans; it does not mean each product is used only for AI.
Why expansion involves more than building wafer fabs
Memory production capacity cannot be added by announcing a new fab alone. Manufacturers describe several different levers: building or expanding fabrication facilities, preparing cleanrooms, modernizing or transitioning existing production, adding advanced packaging capacity and phasing investment over time. Each announcement represents a different stage in the path from a plan to output.

A wafer fab is where chips are manufactured. A cleanroom project can prepare controlled production space, but a construction milestone is not the same as completed, qualified output. Existing sites may also be expanded or changed to support newer processes or product mixes. The result is that one company’s capacity plan may refer to a new facility, another’s to additional cleanroom space, and another’s to transitioning existing manufacturing.

Packaging is part of the HBM capacity chain
HBM requires advanced packaging in addition to memory fabrication. A packaging facility can therefore be an important part of increasing supply even though it is not a wafer fab. This is why comparing investment announcements only by the number of fabs—or treating every announced dollar as equivalent new wafer capacity—misses part of the manufacturing response.
Plans are phased, not instant additions to supply
SK hynix said it would accelerate M15X mass production, prepare the Yongin Phase 1 cleanroom for early 2027, and execute other mid- to long-term projects in phases according to customer demand and investment efficiency. These are forward-looking company plans, not evidence that all the capacity is already operating. The distinction applies throughout the sector: a planned site, a cleanroom under preparation and production shipments are separate milestones.
Company plans, locations and expected timing
The announcements below differ in geography, product focus, time horizon and status. Investment totals are company-announced plans, not equivalent measures of completed spending or currently available capacity. Output dates are company expectations and are not guarantees of supply.
| Company and disclosure | Product or project focus | Location and stated timing | What the figure or milestone means |
|---|---|---|---|
| SK hynix, Q2 2026 results | M15X production; Yongin Phase 1 cleanroom; other phased projects | M15X mass production acceleration; Yongin cleanroom preparation for early 2027 | Company plans in response to reported demand exceeding its supply capability; not all capacity is already operating. |
| Micron, September 2026 SEC filing | HBM advanced packaging | Singapore facility expected to expand packaging capacity beginning in early 2027 | Expected packaging-capacity expansion, rather than a stated wafer-fab output date. |
| Micron, September 2026 SEC filing | Wafer fabrication at an acquired fab | Taiwan; acquired in March 2026, with meaningful shipments from the existing fab expected from mid-2027 | Expected shipments from an existing facility; the date is a company expectation. |
| Micron, September 2026 SEC filing | Cleanroom project | Hiroshima; initial output expected in late 2028 | Expected initial output, not current production. |
| Micron, September 2026 SEC filing | Additional NAND fab cleanroom | Singapore; expected to be operational in the second half of 2028 | Expected cleanroom operational timing, not a stated volume of NAND shipments. |
| Micron, July 2026 announcement | U.S. manufacturing and related investment plan | United States; plan runs through 2035 | More than $250 billion in announced planned investment; long-term goal is to produce 40% of Micron’s DRAM in the U.S. |
| SK hynix, June 2026 strategy explainer | Regional, mid- to long-term investment strategy | South Korea: KRW 600 trillion for Yongin, KRW 100 trillion for Cheongju, and KRW 400 trillion for the southwestern region | KRW 1,100 trillion in company-announced strategy amounts, to be invested in phases. |
Micron’s September 2026 filing sets out several expected output milestones across 2027 and 2028. The locations and project types matter: the Singapore HBM project concerns packaging, the Taiwan milestone concerns meaningful shipments from an existing fab, and the Hiroshima and Singapore projects are cleanroom developments. Those differences make a single “capacity added by” date misleading.

The U.S. and South Korean figures are also not directly comparable. Micron’s more-than-$250-billion announcement is a U.S. plan through 2035, paired with a long-term U.S. DRAM-production goal. SK hynix’s KRW 1,100 trillion figure is a mid- to long-term regional strategy for South Korea, allocated among three areas and phased. The figures use different currencies, geographies, scopes and planning horizons. Neither should be presented as realized expenditure or ranked against the other as though they measured the same thing.
Micron’s June 2025 release had already described expanded U.S. DRAM fab and HBM packaging plans and said supply growth would be managed in line with market conditions. The later July 2026 announcement is the newer announced U.S. plan; the older plan should not be added to it to produce a larger total.

The clearest supported conclusion is that AI is one demand driver manufacturers cite as they expand and adjust memory operations. The evidence spans specialized HBM, conventional server DRAM and NAND, and the manufacturing response spans wafer production, cleanrooms and packaging. It does not establish a precise percentage of sector growth attributable to AI or an independently measured supply deficit.

When evaluating a capacity announcement, separate five questions:
Best Value
- Which product? HBM, conventional DRAM, NAND and packaging capacity are related to the infrastructure trend but are not interchangeable.
- Where? The cited projects span the United States, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hiroshima in Japan.
- When? A target such as early 2027 or late 2028 is a company expectation, not an assurance that output will begin on schedule.
- What stage? An announced investment, a cleanroom preparation milestone, facility operation and product shipments are different statuses.
- What is being measured? Revenue, planned spending, cleanroom timing and expected shipments describe different things; none alone quantifies AI’s causal share of market growth.
SK hynix’s June 2026 investment explainer put the lead time plainly: “Since building semiconductor fabrication facilities requires many years, preparation for new production sites has become increasingly important.” The practical consequence is that demand can influence investment decisions well before any resulting capacity ships. Forward plans indicate how companies intend to respond, while the amount and timing of supply that eventually reaches customers remain dependent on execution and the companies’ stated phasing.
What the announcements do—and do not—show
Together, the disclosures point to a broad manufacturing response rather than a single HBM-only expansion. They show companies naming AI among the forces behind demand and committing to projects that touch several product categories and production stages. They also show why readers should track project status and timing rather than treating an investment headline as immediate additional supply.
They do not prove that all memory-market growth is AI-driven, establish a universal shortage, or predict prices. Company filings and earnings releases are authoritative for what those companies report, but the figures above remain company-specific. The most defensible reading is that AI is contributing to demand and shaping capital plans, while the size of its contribution to total sector growth is not quantified in these disclosures.
