AI can reduce the effort of drafting and analyzing manual testing work: it can help turn requirements into candidate scenarios, suggest test data and exploratory questions, and summarize defect information. The tester still has to decide what matters, check suggestions against product rules, and verify results in the actual product. No general productivity or defect-reduction percentage is established by the sources cited here.
Where AI fits in a manual testing workflow
ISTQB describes generative AI as applicable across the testing lifecycle, from requirements analysis and test design through reporting and continuous improvement. For manual testers, the most useful starting point is often a first draft or analysis aid—not unattended acceptance of generated test results. See ISTQB’s CT-GenAI qualification material.
The official CT-GenAI syllabus names requirements, user stories, technical specifications, GUI wireframes, existing tests, and defect reports as possible inputs to test analysis and design. Give an approved assistant only the context it is permitted to use, and treat its output as a proposal to review. ISTQB CT-GenAI qualification information and its CT-GenAI syllabus describe these lifecycle tasks.
Use AI to turn requirements into reviewable test cases
- Start with an approved source. Provide a sanitized requirement, user story, acceptance criteria, or wireframe description. Ask the assistant to identify ambiguous wording, missing conditions, and assumptions. Review its questions against stakeholder intent and the product’s actual rules.
- Request scenario coverage. Ask for positive, negative, boundary, and alternative-flow scenarios in the team’s established format. Ask it to map each proposed case to an acceptance criterion so gaps and unsupported ideas are visible.
- Inspect and edit the draft. Remove duplicates, correct invented behavior, and add product-specific conditions the model missed. Do not add generated cases to the suite as expected behavior until someone has checked them against the requirements.
- Execute against the product. Run the accepted cases in the intended environment and record observed behavior. A generated scenario is not evidence that a defect exists; only an observed, reproducible result can support a defect report.
This is a practical use of the syllabus’s test-design tasks, not evidence of a measured speed or coverage gain. GitHub’s guidance for Copilot similarly tells users to review and refine generated test suggestions rather than treating them as final. GitHub’s test-writing tutorial is product guidance, not an independent outcome study.

Use AI for test data and exploratory prompts
An assistant can suggest categories of representative, malformed, boundary, or unusual data, as well as questions for an exploratory session. The tester must select data that is safe to use and relevant to real product risks, then decide what to probe as evidence emerges from the application.
- Ask for categories and edge conditions, not just a list of plausible values.
- Check every proposed value against validation rules, domain constraints, and privacy requirements.
- Use exploratory prompts as a starting charter; change direction when live behavior reveals a risk or inconsistency.
- Keep sensitive production data out of prompts unless organizational policy and the service’s data handling explicitly permit it.
Manual exploratory testing relies on observing and learning from actual behavior. AI can offer a next question; it cannot replace the tester’s judgment about what the evidence means.

Use AI to organize defect information and reporting
For a permitted set of defect reports, logs, or tester observations, ask AI to group similar symptoms, extract repeated conditions, or draft a concise summary. Then check every assertion against the underlying records. A summary can make communication clearer, but it cannot verify a conclusion that the source evidence does not support.
Keep a simple record of generated suggestions that the team accepts, edits, or rejects. That makes it possible to assess whether the assistance is useful in your own workflow and whether review effort offsets any drafting benefit. NIST’s 2025 GenAI Code Challenge Evaluation Plan describes a pilot for evaluating AI-generated tests for elementary Python code; it is a plan, not a published result demonstrating benefits for manual testers. Guardrails that keep testing grounded
- Protect data. Follow organizational rules for secrets, customer data, unreleased plans, and proprietary defect records. There is no universal privacy or retention guarantee established across AI products; check the specific service terms and your organization’s approval process.
- Keep requirements authoritative. Ask the assistant to show which criterion supports each suggestion. Investigate omissions and contradictions rather than assuming a fluent response is complete.
- Use stronger review for higher-impact flows. Have a domain expert review proposed coverage where mistakes would matter, and execute the tests independently against the product.
- Maintain a broader verification strategy. AI-generated suggestions do not replace a mix of suitable verification methods. NIST’s 2021 software verification guidance recommends eleven techniques, including black-box and code-based tests, historical tests, automated testing, static scanning, and fuzzing. It is general developer-verification guidance, not an evaluation of generative AI. NIST, Guidelines on Minimum Standards for Developer Verification of Software, published October 6, 2021.
Choose an AI workflow by fit, not promises
Before adopting a tool or expanding its use, check whether it supports the task you need, can use approved project context, produces output in a workable format, fits your team’s review process, meets data-control requirements, and lets the team evaluate output quality. These are practical selection criteria, not a vendor ranking. ISTQB documents lifecycle use cases; GitHub documents a code-context test-generation workflow; NIST provides an example of an evaluation framing.
GitHub’s code-review guidance recommends reviewing AI-generated code and using functional checks and static analysis in code-review workflows. That supports a verify-before-trust practice; it does not establish a measured improvement for manual software testing. GitHub Copilot code-review guidance.

Do not confuse testing with AI and testing AI products
This guide concerns using AI as an assistant to human-led testing. Testing a product that itself uses AI is a separate problem: ISTQB’s AI-testing material highlights challenges such as nondeterministic or probabilistic behavior, data dependence, bias, and explainability. Those characteristics affect what the tester must verify in the system under test. ISTQB CT-AI certification material.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does AI improve manual testing by a measurable percentage?
The cited sources do not establish a general productivity, coverage, or defect-reduction percentage for manual testing. Teams need to evaluate the effect in their own workflow.
Can an AI-generated test case be treated as expected behavior?
No. Check it against approved requirements and product rules before using it, then verify actual behavior by executing the test.
