Plan Bee and AI alerts are two parts of a wider railway-and-forest-department effort to reduce elephant–train collisions in Northeast India. The available reporting does not verify the title’s figure of 255 elephants, or show that Plan Bee alone saved a particular number. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reported protection totals for its combined measures, which include detection technology, speed restrictions and coordination with forest officials.
What is Plan Bee?
Plan Bee is a railway-installed sound deterrent that amplifies the buzz of honeybee swarms. The idea is to use a sound associated with a potential threat to encourage elephants to move away from railway tracks. It is distinct from an alert system: Plan Bee produces a deterrent sound, while detection technology is intended to identify elephant movement and warn railway staff.

India Today reported in July 2021 that NFR had installed a device at a level crossing between Azara and Kamakhya stations in Rangiya Division. The report said the sound from that described installation could be heard from about 400 metres. That is a historical report about one installation—not a verified current operating range or a count of devices in service. India Today’s 2021 report also quoted NFR public relations officer Nripendra Bhattacharyya saying the railway had saved elephant lives at various locations after adopting the technique; that statement is an agency representative’s account, not an independent assessment of Plan Bee’s effect.
An Indian Railways magazine reported that a separate Plan BEE device was commissioned on 7 May 2021 at a level crossing between Nizbargang and Helem stations, also in Rangiya Division. The magazine’s May 2021 issue establishes that commissioning detail, but does not provide a current inventory or an independently measured collision-prevention rate.

How do AI alerts and other railway measures work alongside it?
NFR’s reported approach combines measures that act at different points in a potential encounter. Distributed Acoustic System (DAS) technology is used for AI-based intrusion detection: it can detect elephant movement near tracks and issue alerts. Railway staff can then respond under operating rules, including speed restrictions or stopping trains where needed. Plan Bee, by contrast, is intended to influence elephant movement with sound. Forest-department coordination helps crews and officials respond to animals crossing the line.

A December 2025 report quoting NFR’s public relations chief described technology-led work alongside speed restrictions and Forest Department coordination. A 2026 report also described coordinated train stoppages with Assam Forest Department officials and underpasses at identified locations. These accounts present collision prevention as a layered operating effort—not as a single device that can guarantee a safe crossing. How many elephants has NFR reported protecting?
Media reports quoting NFR say that more than 160 elephants were protected in 2025 through its broader technology-driven efforts, and that more than 2,000 had been safely protected while crossing railway tracks across NFR since 2017. These are railway-attributed figures for multiple measures, including AI-based detection, Plan Bee, speed restrictions and Forest Department coordination. The reports do not isolate Plan Bee’s contribution, and they do not describe the totals as independently audited statistics.

The figure of 255 in the original headline is not established by the available reporting: its period, geography and counting method are not identified. It should not be presented as a verified total or attributed to Plan Bee. Nor can it be substituted with the 2025 or since-2017 figures, which cover different periods and refer to combined NFR efforts. A 2021 educational module repeats a historical estimate of 1,014 elephants saved from 2014 through June 2019 by Plan Bee together with other measures, attributing it to journalist Raza Kazmi (2020). That, too, is a secondary historical estimate for combined interventions, not a current Plan Bee-only count. The IGNOU module gives that attribution.
Why do collisions remain a concern?
Elephants may cross railway lines outside designated corridors, so protecting known crossing points alone cannot remove risk. The Indian Express reported in 2020 that Assam government data put elephant deaths in train accidents at 54 since 2010. That is an Assam-specific historical figure reported in 2020, not a current total for Northeast India. The report also described a mother and calf killed by a train in Lumding Reserve Forest and quoted veterinarian Kushal Konwar Sarma on elephants crossing beyond designated corridors. The Indian Express report illustrates why detection, operating responses and coordination need to work beyond a small number of known crossings.

What the reported figures can—and cannot—show
Outcome counts matter, but they do not by themselves establish how many collisions a particular intervention prevented. NFR’s reported protection totals combine multiple measures, and the sources do not provide a controlled evaluation that separates Plan Bee’s effect from detection, operating restrictions, patrols or other interventions. The evidence supports describing Plan Bee as one component of a broader prevention effort; it does not support assigning it a specific share of the reported totals.
