AI agents can borrow a useful reliability idea from networking: do not treat the first attempt as the whole process. Inspect what happened, use the feedback, and decide whether to try again. The resemblance to TCP/IP is an architectural analogy—not a claim that an agent loop works like a network protocol.
What TCP/IP teaches about unreliable first attempts
The Internet Protocol (IP) moves addressed datagrams between hosts, but it does not itself ensure that data arrives intact, in order, or at all. RFC 791, published in September 1981, states: “The internet protocol does not provide a reliable communication facility.” IP’s job is delivery across interconnected networks; it does not provide end-to-end acknowledgments or retransmissions.

TCP adds a reliability layer above that best-effort datagram service. RFC 793, also published in September 1981, describes TCP as a reliable, ordered process-to-process service. It uses sequence numbers and positive acknowledgments to track data, retransmits when an acknowledgment does not arrive before a timeout, and lets the receiver reorder segments and discard duplicates. The RFC has since been updated and obsoleted by RFC 9293; RFC 793 remains useful for understanding the foundational mechanisms described here.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The key design idea is separation of responsibility: IP carries datagrams, while TCP adds transport reliability and ordering. The lower layer can be imperfect without making every higher-level operation a one-shot attempt.

How an AI agent loop resembles retrying
An agentic loop can follow a related pattern at the level of system design: take an action, inspect the result, and use that observation to choose what to do next. A failed test, a tool error, or unexpected output can become feedback for another attempt rather than a dead end.
But the mechanisms differ. TCP retransmits data according to protocol rules, using signals such as acknowledgments, sequence information, checksums, and timeouts. An agent may interpret error text or test output and revise its action. TCP’s retry is a specified transport behavior; an agent’s retry is a decision made by a system that can misunderstand the feedback or choose an ineffective response.

| Question | TCP | AI agent loop |
|---|---|---|
| What is repeated? | Data is retransmitted under protocol rules. | An action may be revised after observing a result. |
| What counts as feedback? | Acknowledgments, sequence information, checksums, and timeouts. | Tool output, error text, or test results. |
| What does the layer promise? | TCP specifies reliable, ordered delivery over a potentially unreliable lower-level service, subject to its operating assumptions. | A retry loop can support checking and correction, but does not guarantee correctness. |
Where the analogy helps—and where it stops
The analogy is useful when designing an agent workflow: reliability may come not only from a better first attempt, but also from observing outcomes and having a controlled path to recover. It encourages designers to ask what feedback is available, what should trigger another attempt, and how success will be checked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt does not establish that retrying always works. An agent can misread an error, repeat a bad action, or receive feedback that does not reveal the real problem. Likewise, TCP is not a guarantee against every possible failure: RFC 793’s reliability account assumes functioning TCP endpoints and that the internet is not completely partitioned.

Runtime retries are not the same as training-time correction
Cheng’s September 18, 2026 DEV Community article extends the comparison to AI training, framing pretraining in terms of best-effort delivery and post-training in terms of correction. That is the author’s conceptual framing, not a conclusion established by the networking specifications. The RFCs describe IP and TCP behavior; they do not validate claims about AI training outcomes or imply that post-training universally works like runtime retries.
The practical takeaway is narrower and more defensible: a system that can observe a failure and respond to it has a recovery mechanism that a one-shot process lacks. Networking offers a clear example of layered design, while AI agent loops apply a different kind of feedback and decision-making.
