An AHL loan assigns a player to a club in another league—usually his NHL team’s AHL affiliate—so he can be rostered and play there. It is not a trade and does not, by itself, mean the NHL organization has given up its rights. Whether the player must clear waivers first depends on his CBA status and transaction history. A change reported to begin in 2026–27 will also require an assigned player to appear in a minor-league game before recall, according to the Buffalo Sabres’ summary of the new agreement.
What “loaned to the AHL” means
The NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) describes a loan as an NHL club making a player’s services available to a club in another league, subject to the agreement’s waiver and loan rules. In everyday transaction notices, that other club is commonly the NHL organization’s AHL affiliate. The player’s assignment and availability to play change; the transaction is not itself a trade or a surrender of the NHL club’s underlying rights if the player remains under its control. See the CBA, Article 13.

Terminology in a team announcement matters. In a September 2026 roster update, Ottawa listed players as “loaned to Belleville (AHL)” and separately listed players placed on waivers for the purpose of being loaned there. Being placed on waivers, clearing waivers, and being loaned are distinct statuses; a loan notice alone does not establish whether waivers were required or cleared. Ottawa’s announcement illustrates the distinction.

Waivers are not required for every AHL assignment. The CBA’s waiver-exemption rules consider factors including the player’s age when he signed his first NHL contract, how long it has been since that signing, and NHL games played. The applicable game thresholds differ for skaters and goalies, and NHL playoff games count where specified. A player’s age alone is not enough to determine his status: the specific exemption category and transaction record matter. The operative rules are in Article 13 of the CBA.

For a player subject to waivers, a club generally must request and clear regular waivers during the playing-season waiver period before loaning him. Clearing waivers does not permanently exempt him: Article 13 also limits the club’s loan right after clearance by cumulative NHL games played and days on an NHL roster. A Carolina Hurricanes explainer summarizes the familiar post-clearance limits as 10 NHL games or 30 cumulative roster days, with an emergency-recall exception. Treat that shorthand as a starting point, not a substitute for checking the controlling CBA language and the player’s circumstances. Carolina’s transaction primer provides an accessible overview.
If another NHL club claims a player while he is on waivers, he may be transferred to the claiming club rather than loaned to the original club’s AHL affiliate. If no club claims him, the assigning team may loan him if the applicable rules allow it.
How to check a specific player
- Identify the player’s age and the date he signed his first NHL contract.
- Check his position and NHL games played against the applicable skater or goalie exemption threshold.
- Find out when he last cleared waivers, if he has done so.
- Count NHL games and NHL-roster days since that clearance, as the CBA requires.
- Check whether the transaction involves a recall category or another applicable exception.
For an individual case, use the CBA text alongside the player’s official transaction history; do not infer eligibility from one headline.

What changes beginning in 2026–27
The NHL and NHLPA ratified a four-year agreement in July 2025, covering the 2026–27 through 2029–30 seasons. The NHL maintains the CBA document index, and its July 8, 2025 ratification announcement confirms the agreement.
The Buffalo Sabres’ July 21, 2025 summary says that, beginning in 2026–27, a player assigned to the AHL must appear in a minor-league game before the NHL club recalls him. The reported change targets a paper transaction: assigning a player to free an NHL roster spot, then recalling him without an AHL appearance. Under the summary, an assignment in that period therefore involves at least one AHL game before recall. For edge cases, consult the Sabres’ explanation and the agreement documents; the exact application depends on the governing language and any applicable exceptions.
What an AHL loan means for the NHL team
- Player availability: The player is assigned to the AHL club and can play there, rather than being available as an NHL roster player during that assignment.
- Roster space: The move changes the NHL club’s roster and can make a spot available, subject to the applicable roster rules.
- Organizational control: An assignment alone does not mean the club has traded away or relinquished its rights to a player still under its control.
- Salary and cap: The word “loan” does not establish a universal salary or salary-cap outcome. Those effects require the player’s contract and the relevant roster and cap rules.
From 2026–27, the reported minor-league appearance requirement means the team cannot use the described brief paper assignment to free a spot and immediately recall the player without an AHL game. It changes the practical timing of that roster maneuver; it does not, on its own, tell you a particular player’s salary or cap treatment.

Example: a loan after an NHL recall
On October 21, 2025, Montreal recalled Joshua Roy and Marc Del Gaizo, who traveled with the Canadiens. The team later announced that both were loaned to the Laval Rocket. Roy appeared in one game during the trip; Del Gaizo practiced with Montreal but did not make his Canadiens debut. The transaction is a reminder that a loan can follow an NHL recall, and that the word “loaned” alone does not tell you whether the player appeared in an NHL game or why the club made the move. See the October 30, 2025 Canadiens announcement.

How to compare two AHL loan situations
When two transaction notices look similar, compare the details that can change the outcome:
- The season and the CBA provisions in effect.
- The player’s waiver-exempt category and position-specific game threshold.
- Games played and roster days since his last waiver clearance.
- Whether the move involves a regular recall, emergency recall, or another transaction exception.
- Whether the 2026–27 minor-league appearance requirement applies and whether the player has appeared in an AHL game.
- The exact wording of the official transaction notice.
Assess salary and cap consequences separately using the player’s contract and applicable rules; they cannot be read reliably from the word “loan.”
What is established about the AHL labor agreement
On January 7, 2026, the AHL announced that it and the PHPA had reached a tentative agreement, subject to ratification by the AHL Board of Governors and AHL membership. That announcement does not establish final ratification or final terms. See the AHL’s announcement.
