Active tracking lets a drone follow a selected moving subject using its camera and vision system; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted lock or make the drone an autonomous surveillance tool. For example, DJI’s ActiveTrack developer documentation describes selecting a target on screen, confirming it, and then having the aircraft fly relative to that target without a GPS tracker attached to the subject. The feature has limits, and the operator remains responsible for safe, lawful flight and for respecting people’s privacy.
What active tracking does
In a typical subject-tracking workflow, the pilot frames or selects a person or other moving subject in the flight app. The aircraft’s vision system then tries to keep track of that selection. DJI’s ActiveTrack developer reference describes a mission that starts while the aircraft hovers; after the pilot confirms the target, the drone can move relative to it. The subject does not need to carry a GPS tracker for the documented feature to work.

Tracking is not the same as independently recognizing any person. The cited workflow begins with the operator selecting and confirming a target. Nor does tracking promise that the drone will maintain visual lock in every setting: the aircraft may need the pilot to confirm the target again if confidence falls.

What happens when the drone loses the target
DJI’s reference says that when tracking confidence becomes insufficient, the aircraft stops flying relative to the selected object. It may notify the pilot that the target is lost or ask for confirmation. That behavior is a reminder to monitor the aircraft and be prepared to take control rather than assuming the drone will keep following through an obstruction, abrupt movement, or other difficult conditions.

Tracking modes can behave differently
The same documentation distinguishes ActiveTrack from Spotlight. In the described Spotlight behavior, the aircraft hovers while continuing to track the subject through gimbal pitch and aircraft yaw. Mode names and behavior depend on the drone, app, and configuration; the reference is not a guarantee that every current model offers these modes in the same way.
Check obstacle sensing by model and flight mode
Tracking and obstacle avoidance are separate capabilities. DJI’s developer reference specifically says obstacle sensing is disabled in Sport mode for the Mavic Air 2 and Air 2S, and advises using ActiveTrack in an open area in that mode. It also notes that those named models lack left- and right-side obstacle avoidance during Circle mode. These are model-specific warnings from developer documentation, not specifications for every drone.

- Read the manual for the exact aircraft and tracking mode you plan to use.
- Check which directions the aircraft can sense, and whether that sensing changes with flight mode or speed.
- Keep a clear route and be ready to take over; obstacle sensing should not be treated as a guarantee against collisions.
How to assess a drone with subject tracking
There is not enough evidence here to rank currently sold drones or declare one the best. A useful comparison should verify each model’s current specifications and availability rather than relying on a mode name alone.

- Tracking response: Find out how target selection and confirmation work, what the aircraft does when confidence drops, and which recovery steps the manufacturer documents.
- Obstacle sensing: Compare coverage by direction and note restrictions in specific modes.
- Camera: Check the camera capabilities for the footage you need; subject tracking alone says nothing about image quality.
- Flight limits: Review endurance and control range in the manufacturer’s current specifications, and distinguish stated figures from conditions in which they were measured.
- Privacy controls: Check what data the app and aircraft collect, how long it is retained, and what settings are available to limit connectivity or sharing.
- Local rules: Confirm the rules that apply where and how you intend to fly. A tracking feature does not create an exemption.
U.S. rules still apply when a drone follows someone
In the United States, the applicable rules depend in part on the purpose of the flight. The FAA’s Part 107 overview, dated July 6, 2026, covers small unmanned aircraft under 55 pounds used in commercial and government contexts. It describes visual line-of-sight requirements, restrictions on flying over people, a usual maximum altitude of 400 feet above ground level (with a structure-related exception), a maximum speed of 100 mph, and registration requirements. Controlled airspace requires authorization; some restrictions may be waived by FAA approval when the required safety showing is made. Check current FAA rules and location-specific requirements before flying.

For recreational flights, the FAA’s recreational flyer guidance distinguishes personal enjoyment from other purposes. Whether money changes hands is not by itself decisive; the FAA advises assuming Part 107 applies if the purpose is uncertain. Recreational flyers must follow the applicable exception, including visual line of sight (or a co-located visual observer), completion of TRUST, controlled-airspace authorization where required, and applicable registration and Remote ID rules.
The FAA’s Remote ID guidance, last updated March 19, 2025, describes broadcasting identification and location information. It outlines three compliance routes: a Standard Remote ID drone, an attached broadcast module, or operation in a recognized FRIA under the page’s conditions. The FAA says registered or registration-required drones flown recreationally, for business, or for public safety must comply. Check the FAA Declaration of Compliance System to see whether a particular aircraft or module is listed. These are U.S. rules; other countries have their own requirements.

Consider privacy before recording or following a person
Following a selected person can capture more than the intended shot, including their location and movements. EASA’s privacy-by-design guidance explains that images combined with precise location and time information can make it easier to trace people’s whereabouts and activities. It recommends considering data minimization, retention, and security. The relevant obligations depend on the operator’s role and applicable law, so EU guidance should not be treated as a universal legal rule.
