In the cited Aave V3-origin AaveOracle implementation, an asset price uses its configured source when that source returns a positive answer; a missing source or a zero-or-negative answer sends the lookup to a fallback oracle. That condition does not check whether a positive answer is old, so it is not a general stale-feed detector.
How Aave gets a reserve’s price
Aave’s oracle registry associates assets with price sources and a fallback oracle. The market’s getAssetPrice(asset) function returns the price in that market’s base currency. Authorized market administration configures sources, so neither the source nor its behavior should be assumed to be identical across Aave deployments. - Base-currency asset: return the configured base unit.
- No registered source: query the fallback oracle.
- Registered source: call
latestAnswer(). Return the answer if it is positive; otherwise query the fallback oracle.
The contract comment summarizes the last case: “If the returned price by a Chainlink aggregator is <= 0, the call is forwarded to a fallback oracle.” That condition is about the returned value, not its age.

Does Aave fall back when a Chainlink feed is stale?
Not on the basis of freshness in the cited implementation. Its lookup reads latestAnswer() and checks whether the answer is positive; it does not call latestRoundData() or compare an update timestamp in that branch. A positive but old answer therefore does not trigger this fallback condition. This describes the cited implementation, not every customized market or historical version.
Chainlink Data Feeds update when their configured deviation threshold is crossed or their heartbeat interval is reached; they do not continuously publish every market movement. Both settings vary by feed and blockchain. Chainlink advises integrators to inspect updatedAt from latestRoundData() (or latestTimestamp) and set a freshness limit appropriate to the application. If the answer is too old for that policy, the integrator can pause or change operating mode while investigating. See Chainlink’s Data Feeds documentation.

That means “the feed stopped updating” and “Aave used its fallback” are not equivalent statements. A timestamp-aware check requires additional consumer logic or another market-specific control. Do not assume that a fallback is automatically newer or safer; its address and behavior must be verified for the market in question.

Aave’s PriceOracleSentinel addresses a different risk: sequencer downtime on Layer 2 networks. Aave documents it as an operations gate around oracle health, with a recovery grace period after the sequencer returns so users have time to make positions healthy. Current V3 documentation describes restrictions involving borrowing and liquidations, but exact rules depend on the deployed market and version. The sentinel is not a check of each asset feed’s updatedAt. See Aave’s oracle documentation.

What varies between Aave markets
Before applying the general code path to a particular reserve, establish the deployment and configuration. In particular, do not assume all assets use Chainlink, share heartbeat settings, or have the same fallback behavior.
- Market and chain: identify the Aave market and network, then find its deployed oracle and asset source through the market’s provider/configuration and source lookup.
- Source implementation: confirm whether the source is a standard aggregator using
latestAnswer()or a custom adapter with different checks. - Feed freshness: for a Chainlink feed, verify the exact feed address, decimals, latest
updatedAt, heartbeat, and deviation threshold for that chain and feed. - Fallback: verify the configured fallback address and how it derives its price; do not infer freshness from the fact that it is a fallback.
- Sequencer controls: check whether a sentinel is configured and inspect the deployed version’s borrowing and liquidation behavior.
- Other pricing logic: Aave documents CAPO for strongly correlated assets such as wrapped tokens, but it is not a universal fallback for every asset.
Without a named chain, market, and asset, there is no defensible single fallback address or heartbeat interval to give. Those values are deployment- and feed-specific.
