A weaker rupee can make foreign-currency-priced electronics and components cost more in rupees, but it does not automatically raise every Indian retail price by the same percentage. The effect passes through customs valuation, duties and business costs before a brand or seller decides whether—and when—to change a price.
How a weaker rupee changes the import cost
When an imported product is priced in a foreign currency, a buyer needs more rupees to pay the same invoice if the rupee weakens, all else equal. For example, an illustrative invoice of 100 foreign-currency units converts to ₹8,000 at ₹80 per unit and ₹8,500 at ₹85 per unit. This is arithmetic to isolate the currency effect—not a market quote or a forecast of a device’s shelf price.

For customs valuation, Section 14 of India’s Customs Act provides for the applicable exchange rate on the date the bill of entry is presented. The import transaction value can include transport, insurance, loading, unloading, handling and specified related costs. As a result, customs valuation need not use the exchange rate on the day a retailer sets a price or a shopper makes a purchase. See the CBIC text of Section 14.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy the change may not match the price on a shop shelf
Currency conversion is one part of a longer cost chain. A finished device may be imported, or assembled in India using imported components. Freight and insurance, customs valuation, applicable duties and taxes, importer and distributor costs, inventory, and the pricing decisions of brands and retailers can all affect the final rupee price. The effect on a particular product also depends on its contract currency and timing, tariff treatment and any currency-risk arrangements; without product-specific evidence, those factors should not be assumed for a named brand.

The Ministry of Finance has cautioned against treating depreciation as automatic or uniform pass-through. In a written answer to Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1998 on 10 March 2026, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that rupee depreciation and higher global raw-material prices can put upward pressure on input costs in some sectors, while the final effect depends on pass-through, substitute inputs, inflation measures and exchange-rate volatility. The answer concerns input costs broadly; it does not quantify the effect on consumer electronics prices. Read the Ministry’s written answer.
Why the effect differs between electronics categories
Tariff policy is specific to product categories and components, not a single rate for all electronics. NITI Aayog’s Trade Watch Quarterly: July–September (Q2) FY 2025–26, published in February 2026, reports that the 2025–26 budget raised basic customs duty on interactive flat-panel displays from 10% to 20%, while lowering it to 5% for open-cell panels and related display components. It also reports that the 2024–25 budget reduced basic customs duty on mobile phones, mobile PCBA and chargers to 15%. These are dated policy examples, not universal or necessarily current rates for every product. A specific device’s applicable rate depends on its customs classification and the relevant current notification. See NITI Aayog’s report.

The same report describes the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme as an effort to increase domestic value addition and reduce import dependence for selected components. Domestic assembly or manufacturing can change where currency exposure sits, but it does not by itself prove that a product has no imported content.
What can—and cannot—be concluded about prices now
The available evidence establishes the mechanism by which exchange rates can affect import costs, but it does not establish a current percentage increase in Indian electronics retail prices or a reliable time lag between rupee movement and a price change. A weaker rupee can put upward pressure on costs; whether a particular phone, laptop, television or other device becomes more expensive depends on its import structure, tariff line, commercial arrangements and sellers’ response.

The Reserve Bank of India’s study explains the general two-stage channel: exchange rates and foreign prices influence import prices, which can then affect domestic prices. Its numerical analysis is historical, not a current electronics estimate, so it should not be used to predict today’s device prices. Read the RBI study.
For current import data, the Department of Commerce’s TradeStat database provides commodity and country views, with data through FY 2025–26 and a last-update date of 7 August 2026. Those aggregate import figures can help examine exposure, but they do not on their own show how much a given product’s retail price has changed. Open TradeStat.
