How a Walkable 3D Library for DEV.to Exposed the Hard Parts of Debugging

Mika Flowers’s 3D DEV.to library turns live articles into rooms, shelves, and books. Its reported debugging challenges show why stable coordinates and intuitive navigation matter.

Mika Flowers turned DEV.to’s live article catalogue into a first-person 3D library: topics become rooms, feeds become shelves, and articles become books. The project’s hardest problems, as Flowers describes them, were not simply drawing a 3D scene. Live content shifted shelf positions, an animation loop called a ref before it was ready, and a sea of floating nodes proved difficult to navigate. The fixes involved deterministic placement, tracing React lifecycle timing, and using the library metaphor to make the content legible.

What DEV Library is—and what makes it different

Flowers describes DEV Library as a walkable reimagining of DEV.to, built with Next.js and Three.js. Rather than displaying a small set of mock article cards, it pulls real articles from the Forem API. Readers move through the environment with WASD instead of scrolling a conventional feed. Rooms represent topics, shelves represent feeds, books represent articles, and people have rooms. DEV.to is the source community; the 3D library is Flowers’s project, not a standard DEV.to interface.

Flowers says there is no game engine or visual scene editor in this workflow: scene positions, rotations, and offsets are set in code. In the author’s account, that meant a misplaced shelf required changing coordinates, rebuilding the scene, and walking through it to check the result. That limitation describes this project’s workflow, not every way developers can use Three.js.

Why shelves shifted as the catalogue grew

Early shelves were positioned relative to other shelves. That was manageable with a smaller set of articles, but Flowers says the project needed to handle hundreds and then thousands of shelves as real catalogue entries streamed in. Adding content changed the references that other shelves depended on, so the spatial layout—and the navigation through it—could shift during loading.

The reported fix was to give the library a stable coordinate basis: a deterministic causeway. Flowers describes an archivePathPoint(bay) function that maps a logical bay index to a world-space position. Instead of placing each new shelf in relation to a changing neighbor, the layout can derive its position from the bay. In Flowers’s account, this lets more content load without moving the established world layout.

This is a useful distinction when building any streamed scene: the data can grow without the coordinate system itself becoming dependent on the order in which that data arrives. The account describes the implementation and its intended effect; the project’s source code and behavior were not independently inspected here.

What caused the zoneRef.current is not a function error?

Flowers traces the error to a mismatch between the animation loop and React’s effect timing. The loop tried to call zoneRef.current, while the function was assigned to that ref inside a useEffect that depended on currentSection. The loop could run before the effect fired for the first time, leaving the ref without the function the loop expected.

The diagnosis, as Flowers reports it, came from tracing the call path and lifecycle ordering—not from simply regenerating code. The author characterizes it as a stale-closure timing problem. The practical lesson is to follow the value back to where it is initialized and check whether that initialization is guaranteed before the code that consumes it runs. This is an account of one reported bug, not an independently reproduced React diagnosis.

How the library metaphor made a 3D scene easier to navigate

The first version put articles, profiles, tags, and search results together as floating nodes. Flowers says it functioned, but was difficult to navigate. The library structure gave each kind of content a place: topics in rooms, feeds on shelves, articles as books, and people in their own rooms. Flowers also describes using proximity cues, with nearby shelves brightening and distant shelves dimming, to establish hierarchy in the 3D space.

That change addresses a different problem from shelf placement. Deterministic coordinates help keep the world stable as content loads; a spatial metaphor helps people understand what they are looking at and where to go. One commenter, FrancisTRᴅᴇᴠ, said they would love to see a walk-around view of articles as an optional DEV.to feature. That is one reader’s reaction, not evidence of wider demand.

What Flowers says is working—and what remains uncertain

In the article, Flowers says the current project loads catalogue data in bounded pages, seeds shelf placement deterministically, preserves the camera through scene rebuilds, and organizes districts around actual article tags rather than a fixed taxonomy. These are implementation details reported by the author; the account does not supply frame-rate data or independent verification.

Flowers also says the project is unfinished. The author is still assessing how much of the catalogue can remain loaded before distant shelves consume too much frame time. The skyline and haze are tuned, but Flowers explicitly says performance has not been verified on weaker GPUs. No hardware details, frame-rate figures, or cross-device benchmark results are reported, so the project should not be described as performance-tested.

Flowers’s article, “I Turned DEV.to Into a Walkable 3D Library — Debugging It Has Been a Nightmare,” was published on DEV Community on September 23, 2026. Its account is most useful as a concrete development narrative: streamed content needs stable spatial rules, lifecycle-driven code needs careful timing, and a technically functional scene still needs a navigable information structure.
