A vibrating structure gyroscope (VSG) measures angular rate using a mechanically vibrating resonator. When the device rotates, Coriolis coupling produces motion in a different direction or vibration mode; the sensor detects that response and converts it into an angular-velocity estimate. Technical sources also call this family of sensors Coriolis vibratory gyroscopes (CVGs).
How does a vibrating structure gyroscope work?
- Drive a resonator. An actuator keeps a proof mass or other mechanical resonator vibrating in a primary mode.
- Rotate the sensor. If the device rotates while the resonator is moving, Coriolis coupling creates a response perpendicular to the driven motion or in another vibration mode.
- Detect the response. A sensing element measures that secondary motion. Capacitive and piezoelectric readout are documented examples.
- Estimate angular rate. Electronics process the detected signal to determine how quickly the device is rotating. The mechanical layout and signal processing differ between designs.
The key idea is that the resonator supplies the initial vibration; rotation produces the Coriolis response that is measured. Zurich Instruments and Murata describe this operating principle in their overviews of MEMS gyroscopes and gyro sensors (Zurich Instruments; Murata).

What does a VSG measure: angular rate or orientation?
A gyroscope measures angular rate—how quickly it is turning—not absolute orientation by itself. A system can estimate a change in orientation by integrating rate measurements over time, but accumulated measurement error can make the estimate drift. This is why calibration and performance characteristics matter when a gyro is used for navigation or stabilization. Murata describes gyro output in terms of angular rate and explains the role of Coriolis force in the sensing process (Murata’s gyro-sensor overview).
Which structures can be used?
“Vibrating structure” describes the sensing principle, not one mandatory shape. Examples in technical sources include:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Tuning forks: opposed motions can produce differential Coriolis responses.
- Beams: rotation can couple vibration into a beam’s secondary motion.
- Shells and rings: rotation can couple vibration modes in a resonator.
These examples are not an exhaustive list, and no single structure defines every VSG. MEMS is a common way to manufacture vibrating gyroscopes, but the category is not limited to MEMS chips. Aalto University’s MEMS gyroscope thesis discusses structural and sensing approaches, while a review of micromachined inertial sensors covers beam-based examples (Aalto University thesis; “Micromachined Inertial Sensors,” Proceedings of the IEEE review).
How is a VSG different from an optical gyroscope?
A VSG senses rotation through Coriolis coupling in a mechanical resonator. Fiber-optic and ring-laser gyroscopes instead send light in opposite directions around an optical path and detect a rotation-related phase difference. They measure the same broad quantity—rotation—but use different physical mechanisms. The Technical University of Munich describes these optical approaches in its inertial-navigation material (TUM: Inertial Navigation).

What matters when comparing gyroscope designs?
The useful specifications depend on the job the sensor must do. A design intended for one operating environment or measurement range may not suit another. Check the following characteristics rather than assuming every vibrating gyro performs alike:
- Bias drift and zero-rate output: how the output behaves when the sensor is stationary, and how that baseline changes over time or conditions.
- Noise, angle random walk, and resolution: how clearly small or changing rotations can be distinguished from measurement noise.
- Scale-factor accuracy: how accurately the output corresponds to the actual angular rate.
- Rate range and bandwidth: the rotations and signal changes the sensor can measure.
- Temperature behavior and shock tolerance: whether performance remains suitable in the application’s operating environment.
A Proceedings of the IEEE review identifies resolution, drift, zero-rate output, and scale factor among relevant performance factors (review of micromachined inertial sensors). A temperature range reported for a particular high-precision MEMS angular-rate sensor is specific to that device, not a general specification for VSGs (Fraunhofer ENAS sensor description).
