In a 2008 report, researchers described a narrow conducting strip at the interface where crystals of two organic materials—tetrathiofulvalene (TTF) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ)—meet. The finding was specific to this crystal pair and setup: it did not show that insulators generally become conductive just by touching.
What did the researchers observe?
Chemistry World reported that Alberto Morpurgo and colleagues at Delft University of Technology grew flat TTF and TCNQ crystals about a micron thick. Where the crystals met, they observed a conducting strip about 2 nm across. These are dimensions reported in the 2008 account, not product specifications or figures independently verified here from the primary paper.

The important distinction is location: the reported conduction was at the boundary between the crystals, rather than throughout either crystal’s bulk. Chemistry World’s June 16, 2008 report describes the finding and identifies the related paper in Nature Materials (DOI: 10.1038/nmat2205).

The researchers’ proposed explanation was electron transfer. Electrons in higher-energy orbitals in TTF appeared able to move into lower-energy orbitals in TCNQ. In the report’s account, this transfer made it possible for current to flow along the interface.

The transferred charge appeared confined to the two molecular layers in contact. That proposed, highly localized effect is different from turning either crystal into a conductor throughout its volume. The 2008 report also noted that high-quality crystal surfaces were required; the effect should not be treated as automatic whenever these materials touch.
Does this mean any two insulators can conduct when they touch?
No. The reported result concerned the particular organic molecular crystals TTF and TCNQ, their interface, and an experimental arrangement requiring high-quality surfaces. It does not establish that arbitrary insulating materials will conduct at their boundaries.

Nor does the report by itself establish a general-purpose technology or commercial application. The account supplies a specific observation and a proposed explanation, not evidence that ordinary insulating objects can be made conductive by placing them together.

Later work on insulating polymer composites describes a different route: conductive fillers are incorporated into a polymer to form pathways through the composite. A 2024 review discusses fillers including carbon nanotubes, carbon black, carbon fiber, and graphene. That bulk-composite approach is not the same as charge transfer at a TTF–TCNQ crystal boundary, and it does not demonstrate commercialization of the 2008 interface effect. What the 2008 report establishes—and what it does not
- Materials: TTF and TCNQ organic molecular crystals, not insulators in general.
- Where conduction was reported: a narrow strip at the crystals’ interface, not across either crystal’s bulk.
- Proposed mechanism: electron transfer from TTF to TCNQ, described as an explanation rather than a universal mechanism.
- Experimental constraint: the report said high-quality surfaces were needed.
- Evidence scope: Chemistry World gives the reported dimensions and summary; detailed methods, additional measurements, and replication history are not established by that account alone.
