Autofocus and image quality, however, depend on the specific camera, lens, and converter combination. “Drop-in” can mean different things: this article focuses on an integrated, switchable teleconverter, not a drop-in filter.
First, what does “drop-in teleconverter” mean?
The phrase is ambiguous. A teleconverter is an optical element that increases a lens’s effective focal length. Some lenses have a teleconverter built in and switched into the optical path; others accept a separate, detachable converter. A drop-in filter is different: it is a filter inserted into a lens’s filter slot, not a teleconverter.

For example, Canon’s EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x has an integrated 1.4× extender, and its specifications separately list a 52mm drop-in filter size. Nikon’s AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR also has a built-in, switchable 1.4× teleconverter. These product examples clarify the terminology; they are not universal equipment recommendations. How does a 1.4× converter change focal length and aperture?
Multiply the lens’s focal length by 1.4 to get the effective focal length. The converter also reduces the maximum aperture: in the f/4 examples below, it becomes f/5.6, a one-stop reduction in light available at the same shutter speed and ISO.

Does a teleconverter affect autofocus?
It can, but there is no single autofocus outcome for all systems. AF depends on the camera body, lens, converter, effective maximum aperture, and shooting conditions. A compatibility chart for the exact combination is more useful than a general claim that a converter either preserves or disables autofocus.

- The 2X Teleconverter can make the focal length of all the Canon EF lenses increased to 2 times, Built-in 4 groups, 7 pcs optics, and the exposure factor enlarge approx 4. (equals to 2 aperture).
- Compatible for Canon EF Mount Lens.[Notice:It only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 100mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, EF 70-200mm f/4L, and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L.]
- Support lens Auto Focus function.Outstanding image quality thanks to new optical design and improved AF performance. The focus speed is really fast and can track the subject, and lock the subject flexibly and accurately.
- Lens coatings are optimized to minimize ghosting and flare. With the aperture adjustment lever on the adapter, you can adjust the aperture fast.
- With an upgraded USB firmware interface, it supports USB firmware upgrading, and through subsequent upgrades, the adapter can improve its function, and fix bugs.
Nikon USA’s compatibility chart says autofocus is unavailable when the built-in teleconverter is engaged on the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR. The chart also lists camera-dependent f/8 autofocus limitations for other teleconverter combinations. These are Nikon-specific compatibility details, not a rule for all brands or lenses. Does a teleconverter reduce image quality?
It changes the optical combination: the converter adds optical elements and enlarges the image projected by the lens. The result depends on the design and the particular lens-converter pairing, so there is no supported universal percentage or categorical sharpness-loss figure.

- Compatible with select Nikon NIKKOR Z long telephoto lenses.
- Increases the native reach of compatible lenses by 40%—without any loss of resolution and with outstanding image quality.
- Retains all AF functionality and speed, VR capabilities and minimum focusing distance, with only 1 stop of light loss.
- Can use every focus point of your Z series camera's sensor all the way down to f/11, unprecedented for teleconverters.
- Maintains the close focusing capability of NIKKOR Z lenses while enlarging the reproduction ratio by 1.4x. Durable and dust and drip resistant.
Nikon publishes separate MTF charts for its 180-400mm lens with and without the built-in converter. Its 2018 announcement describes a fluorite element, eight ED elements, and coatings intended to suppress ghosting and flare, and says the lens is designed for sharp, detailed rendering. Those are manufacturer materials and product claims, not an independent comparative test. For a practical comparison, seek reliable results for the exact combination or compare matched images made with consistent focus, exposure, distance, and processing. What happens to exposure when the converter is engaged?
On the cited f/4 lenses, engaging the 1.4× extender changes the maximum aperture to f/5.6. With shutter speed and ISO held fixed, that one-stop reduction means one stop less light reaches the sensor. Exposure compensation is not automatically required: with a supported optical combination, the camera meters, and an automatic mode can compensate by changing shutter speed and/or ISO.

- 2x telephoto lens converter: For smartphones with a built in 5x telephoto camera, this converter doubles optical zoom from 5x (120 mm equivalent) to 10x (240 mm equivalent) for distant shooting without digital cropping or image loss
- For 5X telephoto cameras only: Not for main camera; cell phone accessories compatible with Vivo X200 Ultra Xiaomi 15 Ultra Samsung Galaxy S26 S25 Ultra Android iPhone 18 Pro Max 18 Pro 17 16 Pro/Pro Max; select 5X before use if optical zoom is below 5X
- Compact and lightweight: Compared to standard external zoom lenses, this 2x converter is shorter and lighter; it features a 17mm thread for 17mm threaded phone cages, cases, and lens clips; content creator essential photography and filming accessories
- Multicoated optical glass: 7 elements in 5 groups of HD optical glass and multiple nanocoatings reduce glare and distortion, resist water, fingerprints, and scratches, and ensure excellent light transmission; a cleaning cloth is included
- Important note: Different phone brands may require different zoom levels to activate the telephoto lens; compatible with iPhone, apply the included stickers to cover the wide angle lens to prevent lens switching caused by light sensor interference
The trade-off matters most when light is limited or the subject is moving. If you need to retain a fast shutter speed, a higher ISO may be the practical way to maintain exposure; if you keep ISO fixed, the camera may need a slower shutter speed, which can increase motion blur. The best choice depends on the scene and your priorities.
What changes with an integrated, switchable design?
An integrated converter can be engaged without removing the lens, but handling differs by lens. Nikon says the 180-400mm’s switch can be operated while gripping the camera and looking through the viewfinder, allowing a change from the 180-400mm range to 252-560mm. That convenience is specific to this lens design, not a feature of every teleconverter. Nikon 2018 announcement

Nikon also states that this lens’s VR provides shake compensation equivalent to a 4.0-stop shutter-speed increase. Nikon Corporation’s 2018 figure is based on CIPA standards, using a full-size 35mm-equivalent sensor at maximum telephoto position, and applies with or without the built-in converter. It is a manufacturer-published figure for this lens, not a general teleconverter benefit. Nikon 2018 announcement
Quick Recap
What to check before using a teleconverter
- Confirm whether you mean an integrated or detachable teleconverter; a drop-in filter is a separate accessory.
- Check the exact camera, lens, and converter compatibility information, including whether autofocus is available in the intended configuration.
- Account for the effective focal length and maximum aperture when choosing shutter speed and ISO.
- Look for image-quality evidence for the precise combination rather than assuming a fixed gain or loss.
- For integrated designs, check how the converter is engaged and whether the lens can be switched without removing it.
