A soft silicone sheet can estimate its changing three-dimensional shape by measuring how light travels through optical waveguides embedded inside it. In a research prototype from MIT, 14 waveguides and an algorithm reconstructed bends and twists; tests using 3D-printed molds produced a reported error of less than 0.4 centimeters. That is a laboratory result, not a guarantee for every movement or a validated clinical device.
How does the sheet sense its shape?
The prototype combines elastomeric optical waveguides with a silicone matrix. When the sheet bends, the waveguides bend too, changing the amount of light transmitted through them. LEDs send light into the guides, and light sensors measure the resulting signals. An algorithm uses those readings to estimate the sheet’s overall three-dimensional shape.

The design has 14 waveguides in a sheet measuring 16 cm × 16 cm × 0.5 cm, with electronics arranged around its perimeter. A roughened side of each guide makes its light response sensitive to bending in either direction. The researchers arranged the guides in a zig-zag pattern to help distinguish shapes that might otherwise yield ambiguous readings. The system is therefore not simply detecting that the sheet moved: it uses a pattern of optical responses to infer how it deformed.

What did the prototype demonstrate?
Shape reconstruction in mold tests
The team used simulations to select a waveguide layout, then fabricated a physical sheet and evaluated it with 3D-printed molds. Qifan Yu told MIT News that the reconstruction error in those tests was less than 0.4 centimeters. MIT’s report compares that result with around 1 to 2 centimeters for existing designs using rigid sensors. These are reported results under the stated test conditions, not a universal accuracy guarantee or a direct clinical comparison. The paper characterizes the system as real-time shape sensing with sub-centimeter accuracy.
Resilience when a guide is damaged
The waveguides provide overlapping information about the sheet’s shape. The authors report that this redundancy allows reconstruction to continue when sensing elements are damaged; MIT says remaining fibers could recover the overall shape even if a few were cut or disconnected. That does not establish that the system can tolerate any number or pattern of failures.

An upper-arm wrap
The researchers also demonstrated an upper-arm wrap that detects joint motion and external force. The wrap is a proof of concept for gathering movement-related data, not evidence that the device is already used in routine rehabilitation.
What might it be used for?
The paper identifies physical therapy, virtual reality, teleoperation, and soft robotics as possible application areas. A conformable sensing surface could, for example, provide information about how a wrapped arm changes shape as someone moves. MIT mechanical engineering graduate student Qifan Yu said the approach targets fully soft and stretchable sensing surfaces that could be safer for interaction with a person or soft environment.

- 1. Bending sensor. The degree of bending of the sensor can be translated into a change in resistance value. The more the bend, the higher the resistance. This sensor can be used to make an glove
- 2. Bending direction: the side with the word is the inner side when bending. Avoid bending pin portion ( the part that is not bent) during use, as damage may result
Those applications remain possibilities, not established outcomes. The sources do not demonstrate clinical benefit, routine patient use, or a commercial product. MIT assistant professor Kaitlyn Becker described the rehabilitation goal as building tools to augment physical therapists’ work and help track and quantify progress over time.

MIT reports that the fibers in this design are 1 millimeter thick and describes thinner fibers as a future development direction. The prototype also depends on optical waveguides, LEDs, light sensors, and electronics; its soft sensing surface does not mean every part of the system is soft. Accuracy figures from mold tests should not be assumed to hold for every sheet shape, speed, force, or real-world setting, none of which is established by the reported numbers.
