The leading explanation is that light activates cryptochrome proteins in a bird’s retina, setting off a reaction that creates two radicals with correlated electron spins. Earth’s magnetic field can influence how those spins evolve, changing the reaction’s chemical products. If the molecules are oriented in an orderly way, those changes could give a bird directional information. The mechanism is scientifically plausible, but the complete sensory pathway has not been demonstrated in a living bird.
What is the proposed chemical reaction?
A radical is a chemical species with an unpaired electron. In the proposed mechanism, light drives an electron transfer in cryptochrome, producing a pair of radicals whose electron spins are correlated. This is called a radical pair.

The pair can occupy either a singlet state, in which the electron spins are opposite, or a triplet state, in which they are parallel. Interactions between the electron spins and nearby atomic nuclei influence transitions between these states. The surrounding magnetic field also affects the spin dynamics.

The singlet and triplet states can lead to different chemical outcomes. If a magnetic field changes how much time the radical pair spends in each state, it can change the relative yields of the reaction products. The field does not provide the energy that starts the reaction: light initiates the photochemistry, and the field modulates the spin evolution of a reaction already underway.

How could a chemical reaction indicate direction?
A reaction that merely responds to magnetic-field strength would not, by itself, tell a bird which way to orient. Directional information requires the radical pair, or its protein environment, to be ordered enough that the reaction’s response changes with the field’s orientation.
In this model, birds have an inclination compass: it reads the angle of Earth’s magnetic field lines relative to the bird, rather than distinguishing one magnetic pole from the other along the same line. That differs from a conventional compass needle, which aligns with a field’s polarity.

The proposed chain runs from light reaching the retina to cryptochrome photochemistry, then to magnetic-field-dependent spin dynamics and changes in reaction yield. A downstream visual or neural system would have to turn those chemical differences into orientation. Experiments support some early chemical steps in isolated systems, but the full chain has not been confirmed in vivo.

Behavioral clues fit a light-dependent retinal sensor
Bird compass behavior is associated with the eye, depends on light, and responds to magnetic-field inclination rather than polarity. Those features fit the radical-pair proposal: light could activate a retinal molecule, and an orientation-sensitive reaction could provide a directional signal. They do not prove the mechanism, because light might have another physiological role and other magnetic-sensing proposals have been discussed.

Radio-frequency effects are informative, but not uniform
Oscillating radio-frequency (RF) magnetic fields can perturb radical-pair spin dynamics, so behavioral responses to RF fields offer a way to test the hypothesis. A 2017 review in the Journal of Comparative Physiology A reported independent replication by two competing laboratories of disorienting effects from broadband RF magnetic fields. The review also described disparate results for monochromatic fields near the electronic Larmor frequency. The RF findings should therefore not be treated as a single, universally replicated confirmation.
Robin CRY4 is a candidate, not a proven receptor
A 2021 study in Nature, “Magnetic sensitivity of cryptochrome 4 from a migratory songbird,” found that cryptochrome 4 (CRY4) from the migratory European robin was magnetically sensitive in vitro and more so than CRY4 from chicken and pigeon. This strengthens the case for robin CRY4 as a candidate molecule. It does not show that CRY4 alone senses the field in a living bird or establish how a magnetic signal reaches downstream neural processing.

- Fully multi-coated lenses increase light transmission with multiple anti-reflective coatings on all air-to-glass surfaces. Roof prism design is valued for greater durability and a more compact size.
- Adjustable eyecups twist up and down for comfortable viewing with or without eyeglasses. Center focus wheel adjusts the focus of both binocular barrels at the same time. Diopter (located on right eyepiece) adjusts for differences in a user's eyes.
- Rubber armor provides a secure, non-slip grip, and durable external protection. Binoculars are tripod adaptable allowing use on a tripod or car window mount.
- Nitrogen purging and o-ring seals provide water and fogproof performance in all environments. Rugged construction withstands recoil and impact.
The 2017 review also described unresolved questions about cryptochrome function: interaction partners for Cry1a and Cry1b remained to be identified, and a proposed partner for Cry4 awaited independent replication. Evidence for a general radical-pair mechanism is not the same as proof that one particular cryptochrome is the receptor.
What do the numbers say about the spin chemistry?
A 2009 review in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences gives useful model context. These figures explain constraints on the proposed chemistry; they are not measurements of how quickly a bird perceives a direction.

What remains unproven?
The main gap is the connection between a plausible magnetic-field-sensitive reaction and a working sensory pathway in a living bird. The isolated-molecule findings do not establish that a candidate cryptochrome is correctly positioned and oriented in the retina, that its reaction products change in the relevant way inside a bird, or that downstream cells read those changes to guide behavior.
Nor should the proposal be simplified to “birds navigate by quantum entanglement.” The chemically specific idea is that a radical pair has correlated electron-spin states and that quantum spin dynamics may influence reaction yields. That does not mean the bird’s entire navigational behavior has been observed at the quantum level.
The radical-pair hypothesis is one of the leading explanations for the light-dependent, inclination-based avian compass, not a completed account of how birds sense magnetic fields. A 2009 PNAS review details the spin chemistry and its constraints; the 2016 Annual Review of Biophysics article “The Radical-Pair Mechanism of Magnetoreception” frames the primary sensory mechanism as unclear; the 2017 review assesses behavioral RF evidence and unresolved cryptochrome questions; and the 2021 Nature study reports the in-vitro CRY4 comparison.
