A phone can show the right time after days switched off because a low-power real-time clock may keep counting while the rest of the device is shut down. When the phone starts, an automatic time source can correct its clock. If its timekeeping hardware lost power, or automatic setting is unavailable, the time may be wrong until it synchronizes or is set manually. The details depend on the phone model.
What can keep time while a phone is off?
“Off” does not necessarily mean every circuit has lost power. A real-time clock (RTC) is a low-power circuit that counts oscillator cycles. In general RTC designs, it can keep running through a system power loss if backup power remains available. Without that power, its stored time can reset. This describes RTCs generally, not a guaranteed design shared by every smartphone.

The clock you read on screen is the phone’s software wall clock, a different layer from the hardware that may keep time while the operating system is off. Android’s SystemClock documentation says the wall clock can be set by the user or the phone network. It also distinguishes wall-clock time from elapsed time and documents a network time clock that relies on a recent successful synchronization.

How does the phone correct its time after startup?
If automatic date and time is enabled and a suitable network time source is available, the phone can update its wall clock after it starts. Android’s documentation describes network-set wall time; Apple also provides automatic time setting on iPhone. A connection is not proof that every device will synchronize immediately: behavior can depend on the model, software, region, carrier, and available time source.
If the displayed time is incorrect, check the automatic setting first. If it cannot correct the clock, the device’s manual controls let you enter the date and time yourself.

Why can the time zone be wrong even if the clock is running?
Keeping track of time and choosing the local time zone are separate jobs. A phone may retain or synchronize the time while still displaying the wrong local hour because its time-zone setting is incorrect.

What to check if a phone shows the wrong time
- Check automatic date and time. On Android, open the date, time, and time-zone settings described in Google’s guide. On iPhone, use the settings documented in Apple’s date and time guide. Menu names and availability can vary by device and software version.
- Check automatic time zone separately. If the time is off by an hour or another zone-sized difference, verify the time-zone setting rather than assuming the clock itself stopped. Android may use location to determine the zone.
- Use the manual controls if automatic setting is unavailable or incorrect. Apple’s time and time-zone troubleshooting guidance covers cases where settings cannot be changed, including connection-related checks. Google also documents manual controls for Android.
Does every phone have a backup clock battery?
No universal claim is warranted. RTC designs generally need backup power to continue through a system shutdown, but that does not establish that every phone has a separate, user-replaceable coin-cell battery. Hardware and behavior vary by model.
One specific example is Xiaomi’s REDMI 15 shutdown-alarm feature, which uses an RTC and requires sufficient battery power. That model-specific feature illustrates that some timekeeping behavior can depend on remaining device power; it does not show that all phones use the same arrangement.
