It did not find extraterrestrial life: the reported samples came from an Atlantic hydrothermal system, and use on worlds such as Europa or Enceladus remained a future goal.
What the 2014 study demonstrated
The study, “Microchip nonaqueous capillary electrophoresis of saturated fatty acids using a new fluorescent dye,” was published in Analytical Methods in 2014. Its authors adapted nonaqueous microchip capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence, abbreviated µNACE-LIF, to analyze saturated fatty acids. The paper describes labeling the molecules with Pacific Blue hydrazine and detecting their fluorescence after separation.

Fatty acids with different carbon-chain lengths can be separated by the method. The researchers reported separation up to C30 on a microchip. That range matters because long-chain fatty acids are hydrophobic and can be difficult to handle in water-based analyses; the nonaqueous solvent approach was designed to address that challenge.

Why fatty-acid patterns could matter
Many microorganisms have fatty acids in their cell membranes. The research explored whether the chain lengths found together in a sample could offer clues about which kinds of organisms were present. As JPL researcher Peter Willis put it, “different microorganisms have cell membranes with different carbon chain length signatures.”

The 2014 Chemistry World account described algal fatty acids as tending toward C20 and C22, and bacterial fatty acids as typically C16 and C18. These are broad tendencies reported in that account, not universal rules or a stand-alone test for identifying life. A useful interpretation would depend on the sample and its context, not just one chain length.
What the Snake Pit samples showed
Kevin Hand supplied samples from the Snake Pit hydrothermal system in the Atlantic, and Morgan Cable analyzed them using the microchip method. The Chemistry World report described signals for C12, C18, C20 and C22 fatty acids. The researchers attributed C12 and C18 to gram-negative bacteria, and C20 and C22 to phototrophic microplankton.

Those findings were interpretations of material from an Earth environment. They were not detections of organisms on another planet, nor proof that the same chain-length pattern would uniquely identify a microorganism in an unfamiliar world.

What remained to be solved for planetary use
The team’s interest included the possibility of studying icy ocean worlds such as Europa and Enceladus. But the 2014 account framed field deployment and use by a future robotic lander as ambitions, not as capabilities already demonstrated on a planetary mission.

Miniaturization could make analysis more practical in the field, but an instrument’s scientific value also depends on preparing a sample reliably. Michael Breadmore, an electroseparation expert at the University of Tasmania, called it “the first method to separate up to C30 fatty acids on a microchip.” He emphasized that “the key to this being useful lies in the simplicity of preparing the sample.” A successful separation in a laboratory analysis is therefore only one part of making the approach useful beyond Earth.

This was a promising analytical method, not a life-detection result. It showed that a fluorescently labeled, nonaqueous microchip technique could separate long-chain fatty acids and was applied to Earth samples with reported microbial interpretations. Its relevance to astrobiology lies in the possibility that fatty-acid patterns could help characterize a future sample—not in evidence that life has been found elsewhere.

Willis described the broader hope: “So by measuring these molecules in an unknown sample we can gain information about what organisms were present, even if the sample is very old and the organisms are no longer alive.” Establishing that such a signal indicates life on another world would require interpreting the chemistry in the setting of that sample and ruling out other explanations.
