A 2024 study reported that the porous metal–organic framework ZnH-MFU-4l reversibly captures carbon dioxide at temperatures above 200°C. The result is a laboratory materials finding: it points to a possible way to capture CO₂ from some hot post-combustion exhaust streams, but does not show that the material is deployed in an industrial plant.
What the study found
Rohde and colleagues reported ZnH-MFU-4l, a porous framework with terminal zinc hydride sites, in a paper published in Science on November 15, 2024. The authors say the material binds CO₂ reversibly above 200°C, a temperature range they describe as relevant to industrial exhaust and post-combustion capture. Read the paper in Science.

In the proposed mechanism, a CO₂ molecule inserts into a zinc–hydrogen bond, forming a zinc-formate species. The paper reports structural and spectroscopic evidence for this chemical transformation. The framework’s pores provide the material structure; the zinc hydride sites are central to the reported binding reaction.
How hot-temperature capture works
Binding at zinc hydride sites
In the study’s account, CO₂ reacts with terminal Zn–H groups to form zinc-formate species. The reaction is reversible: under the tested desorption conditions, CO₂ can be released and the material used again. This is a chemical binding mechanism, rather than simply proof that the pores hold gas under any condition.

Why temperature matters
The authors report capture across roughly 200–400°C and adsorption measurements at 200°C, 250°C, and 300°C. That range matters because some post-combustion exhaust is hot. A material that can bind CO₂ at elevated temperature could, in principle, reduce the need to cool a gas stream before capture. The study establishes the material’s behavior in laboratory tests; it does not establish the energy or cost savings of a complete capture process.
What the capacity and cycling results mean
Capacity figures apply to specific measurement conditions, not to every exhaust stream or operating setup. The paper reports 3.27 mmol of CO₂ per gram at 10 mbar and 150°C, and 3.52 mmol/g at 1 bar. These are distinct reported uptake results; neither number alone describes performance in a full industrial process.

For durability, the authors report 508 adsorption/desorption cycles in an isothermal laboratory test at 300°C. Under the selected partial-desorption conditions, measured capacity was 1.24 mmol/g in the first cycle and 1.19 mmol/g in the final cycle. This is evidence of repeated laboratory cycling under that protocol, not a demonstration of service life in a plant.
What the pelletized breakthrough test adds
Adsorption measurements characterize uptake under specified test conditions. A breakthrough test instead passes a gas mixture through a sample and observes how CO₂ capture behaves over time as the gas flows through it. The paper reports a test using pelletized ZnH-MFU-4l at about 280°C, with feed gas containing either 20% or 4% CO₂ in nitrogen.

This dynamic test is useful because an industrial adsorbent would need to work with flowing gas, not just in an equilibrium measurement. But the test remains laboratory evidence using defined CO₂–nitrogen mixtures. It is not a test of a complete plant exhaust stream or proof of operation at industrial scale.

Here, “industrially relevant” refers to the elevated temperature of some exhaust streams and the authors’ proposed post-combustion use case. It does not mean an industrial facility is using ZnH-MFU-4l, or that the material is ready to buy.

- Not established by the study: commercial scale-up, field performance, plant economics, lifecycle emissions, or a verified commercial deployment.
- Scope: the proposed application concerns point-source or post-combustion capture, not direct air capture.
The result is therefore best understood as a promising high-temperature materials study. Whether it can become a practical capture process depends on questions beyond the reported tests, including process integration and performance at scale.
