How a Local Manga Reader Could Work in VS Code and Cursor

A VS Code custom editor and webview can form the basis of a local manga reader, but offline behavior and Cursor compatibility require project-specific verification.

A manga reader inside VS Code or Cursor can be built around a custom editor for opening an archive and a webview for displaying its pages. That architecture is documented, but the available evidence does not verify that the reader in the title was built, works offline, or was tested in either editor. The distinction matters: a design can use local files without requiring a network, but only an audit and tests can establish that a particular extension makes no network requests.

How an editor can display a manga archive

VS Code’s custom editor API lets an extension replace the standard text editor for selected resources, including binary formats. For a reader that displays a comic without modifying its archive, a read-only custom editor is a suitable starting point. The VS Code Custom Editor API guide describes this extension point.

The reading interface can run in a webview: an isolated surface where an extension can present HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The extension and webview communicate through messages, allowing the interface to request page changes or receive information from the extension. The VS Code Webview API guide documents this model.

What a CBZ reader needs to do

A CBZ-based reader needs to open the archive, identify image entries, arrange them in the intended reading order, and show the selected page. Navigation and scaling are natural parts of the interface; saving a reading position is an optional feature. Those are implementation requirements, not verified features of the reader named in the title.

  • Buttton: Power Button, Page-Turn Buttons USB-C Port (Supports OTG or use as an audio jack) microSD Card Slot Built-in Speaker Built-in Microphone

Archive handling needs particular care. Support for CBZ does not establish support for CBR: they are different archive formats, and the cited platform documentation says nothing about a particular extension’s parser. A project should state which archive and image formats it handles, how it orders pages, and what happens with malformed files or archives it cannot read. No specific parser, supported-format list, archive-size limit, or completed feature set is established here.

What “offline” actually requires

Using a local archive does not by itself prove that an extension is offline. The webview needs access to local images through permitted, webview-safe resource URIs, and its resource roots should be restricted appropriately. See the VS Code Webview API local-resource guidance.

  • Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
  • Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off‌: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.

A defensible zero-network claim requires checking the implementation for remote assets and network calls, then verifying its behavior. Without that evidence, the accurate statement is narrower: the documented architecture can display local resources, but the reader’s network behavior has not been established.

Does it work in both VS Code and Cursor?

Cursor documents extension support and importing VS Code settings in its installation documentation, and its extension API reference documents APIs under the vscode namespace. This makes a shared extension model plausible; it does not establish that a specific extension works in both products. Compatibility should be reported only for the editor versions actually tested.

What existing reader listings can—and cannot—show

Marketplace descriptions show that related editor extensions advertise some of the same broad use cases. Ebook Reader Studio’s listing mentions DRM-free CBZ, pagination, a table of contents, and reading-position memory. Plain Sight Reader’s listing describes a local offline reader and claims it makes zero network requests. These are product descriptions, not independent evaluations, and they do not verify the features or network behavior of the reader in the title.
