A child’s phone can support outdoor play when it has a clear, limited job—such as letting them check in or contact a trusted adult—and the family agrees that play comes first. Whether to provide one depends on the reason for it and the child’s ability to manage the device, not a universal “right age.”
Start with the reason for the phone—and the child’s readiness
Before choosing a device, name the need it is meant to meet: a way to call or message family, scheduled check-ins, or another specific communication requirement. If broad internet access is not part of that need, a simpler device may be worth considering.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends weighing a child’s responsibility, impulse control and ability to follow expectations when considering a first phone. It also encourages families to consider less complex options: “Talk with your child about other options—like getting a flip phone or watch that allows communication without all the digital baggage.” AAP developmental-behavioral pediatrician Dr. Jenny Radesky advises, “Treat getting a phone like an experiment.” A phone can be a trial with expectations that are reviewed over time; if the child is not ready, the AAP says, “that’s OK too.” AAP guidance on a child’s first phone

Choose the least complicated option that meets the need
| Option | When it may fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Basic flip phone | The main need is voice calls or basic messages. | Check whether its communication features meet the family’s needs, and confirm carrier compatibility and charging requirements. The AAP identifies a flip phone as an option; specific models and plans are not established here. |
| Communication-capable watch | A wearable device for communication is a better fit than a phone. | Check which contacts and features it supports, along with carrier compatibility and charging requirements. The AAP identifies this category as an option; specific models and plans are not established here. |
| Smartphone | The child has a clear need for smartphone features and can manage the agreed expectations. | Decide whether internet, apps or social features are genuinely needed, and set boundaries around them before outdoor play. |
Agree on rules that keep play in the foreground
Make the expectations together and explain what each boundary is for. AAP guidance recommends setting controls and rules with the child, explaining their purpose, and revisiting them as responsibility grows. AAP first-phone guidance

- Where it goes: Decide whether the phone stays in a pocket, bag or designated spot while the child plays, and who is responsible for carrying it.
- When it is used: Set clear moments for check-ins or messages, rather than leaving the phone available for constant checking.
- What it can do: Agree on allowed contacts, apps and features. If the purpose is communication, consider whether games, social media or open internet access are needed at all.
- How rules change: Set a time to review the arrangement and explain how demonstrated responsibility could change limits.

Keep outdoor time focused on movement and exploration
Running, climbing, exploring and child-led games can remain the main event even when a phone is available for communication. In early-care and education settings, the CDC describes outdoor play as a chance for movement, exploration and practice with developmental skills. Its guidance is not a study measuring phone distraction, but it does give a practical safety boundary: adults supervising children in or near water should avoid distracting activities, including phone use. If technology adds something worthwhile to an outing, decide beforehand what it is for and keep it purposeful—for example, a brief astronomy activity, geocaching or identifying a plant. The AAP offers these as ways technology can be incorporated outdoors without turning general screen use into the focus. AAP suggestions for healthy digital media habits
Make a contact plan; do not rely on the phone alone
Agree with the child on whom to contact, how to reach that person and what to do if they become separated or need help. Share the plan with the other adults responsible for the child, such as a caregiver or school, and keep contact details current. The CDC recommends coordinating emergency arrangements with a child’s school or caregiver and maintaining up-to-date contact information. CDC guidance on children, schools and emergencies
