A fruit-fly connectome can provide wiring data for a tic-tac-toe experiment, but it does not make the fly brain independently play perfect strategy. In the accessible FlyCNS-TicTacToe account, the board-to-neuron mapping is hand-designed and minimax supplies the strategic move choice in the described unbeatable mode. A separate architectural-breakdown article by Muhammad Hammad reports a spiking implementation and memory figures; those claims should not be conflated with the non-spiking project account.
What the project connects—and what it does not
FlyCNS-TicTacToe, described by its author Rishu, takes real fruit-fly connectome data as an input to a small game experiment. The author says the selected neurons include cells that send commands out of the fly brain and central-brain neurons feeding into them. Connection data and synapse counts inform a signal-flow calculation, while the author maps the nine tic-tac-toe squares onto neuron groups chosen for the project.

That makes the wiring data real, but the game representation is an engineered mapping. The board is not a naturally occurring neural representation of tic-tac-toe, and the selected cells are not presented as the fly’s decision circuit. The project account explicitly says it does not simulate neuronal spikes or real biological timing.

The circuit and the game-playing algorithm have different jobs. In Rishu’s described unbeatable mode, minimax selects strategically strong moves; the connectome-based circuit helps choose among moves that are already considered best. The author’s summary is direct: “The fly circuit has no look-ahead, so on its own it walks into forks and forgets to block.”

Consequently, “unbeatable” describes the minimax-assisted game behavior, not an ability demonstrated by the fly-derived circuit alone. The circuit’s role is narrower: it provides a way to influence a choice within the constraints imposed by the game-playing algorithm.
Why two architectural descriptions should not be merged
A search-result excerpt for Muhammad Hammad’s “Architectural Breakdown” presents a different implementation narrative: a spiking simulation, a minimax fallback safety mechanism, and reported resource measurements. The accessible FlyCNS-TicTacToe account by Rishu instead describes a non-spiking signal-flow calculation and says minimax chooses among best moves. The available accounts do not establish that these are the same implementation, so their architectures and performance claims should be kept separate.

These numbers are claims attributed to that article, not measured results established across both projects. In particular, its “safety net” account should not be used as evidence for how Rishu’s minimax-assisted mode works.

What the neurotransmitter interpretation can support
The project account describes using neurotransmitter information to predict whether connections should be treated as excitatory or inhibitory. That sign assignment is an inference, not a certainty established by the account. A model that uses such inferred signs can explore how a wiring-derived network might influence outputs, but it should not be described as reproducing the fly’s actual neural activity.

What a reader can reasonably conclude
- The experiment uses connectome connectivity information, but the board-square-to-neuron-group mapping is the author’s construction.
- The accessible Rishu account describes signal flow rather than a biological spiking simulation; the separate Hammad excerpt describes a spiking approach.
- In Rishu’s unbeatable mode, minimax provides strategic selection. The connectome-based component does not itself establish perfect play.
- The Hammad excerpt’s scale, memory, and correction figures remain that article’s reported claims rather than independently confirmed benchmarks.

Rishu’s account says the code is MIT licensed and the data is CC-BY licensed, and that a free neuPrint token is needed. Those are the terms and access details stated in that account; anyone planning to reproduce or reuse the project should check the current repository, data attribution requirements, and neuPrint terms directly, since access and licensing details can change.
