KashIQ is described by its author as a privacy-focused Flutter finance app that keeps working locally, calls native C++ routines through Dart FFI, and uses QR codes in its device-sync flow. But the flow in the account is not fully air-gapped: a QR code transfers key material, then the receiving device downloads an encrypted backup blob from cloud storage. That distinction matters when evaluating what the design protects and what it still depends on.
What the author says the app does
Alexander Pompili’s KashIQ account describes a Flutter personal-finance app built around local data storage, native computation, and optical device enrollment. The reported stack includes Riverpod, Drift with SQLite, SQLite3MultipleCiphers or SQLCipher, a Hive cache, C++ routines, and QR transfer. These are details from the author’s post, not an independently inspected or audited codebase.

The architectural idea is to keep routine app use on-device, use native code for selected computation, and avoid sending readable financial records through an ordinary sync service. Those are separable choices: an app can be offline-first without using C++, and it can use QR codes without being cloud-free.
Why “air-gapped” needs qualification
Flutter defines offline-first as “an app capable of offering most or all of its functionality while being disconnected from the internet” in its offline-first architecture guide. That describes availability while disconnected; it does not mean that the app never communicates with a server or that its data is secure.

In the flow Pompili describes, one device displays a QR code containing key material, another device scans it, and the receiving device then downloads an encrypted backup blob from cloud storage. Optical transfer avoids typing or manually copying the enrollment information, but the subsequent download is still a remote operation. A fully local transfer would require the encrypted backup itself to move between devices without that cloud step, for example through a direct device-to-device method or a file the user transfers manually. The post’s described method should therefore be understood as optical enrollment plus remote encrypted-blob sync—not a fully air-gapped system.
How C++ fits into a Flutter app
Dart FFI lets Dart call functions exposed through a native C-compatible interface; it is not a direct bridge to arbitrary C++ classes or C++ ABI symbols. Flutter’s current native-code guidance recommends the package_ffi template and build hooks for new FFI packages starting with Flutter 3.38. The Dart C interop guide covers the boundary between Dart and C APIs.

- Choose a narrow native boundary. Identify a routine that genuinely needs native integration. Keep database access, screen state, and ordinary application logic in Dart unless there is a specific reason to move them.
- Expose C-compatible functions. Wrap any C++ implementation behind functions with C-compatible types and symbols. Flutter’s legacy FFI guide notes that C++ symbols should be marked
extern "C"to avoid C++ name mangling at the boundary. - Package and build the native code for each target. Use the current FFI package workflow where it fits; a plugin or legacy native build setup may still be appropriate in some linking and packaging cases. Platform build and library-loading requirements differ.
- Declare matching Dart bindings and test the boundary. The Dart declarations, native types, memory ownership, error handling, and library packaging must agree. Test each supported platform rather than assuming that a successful build on one proves the others work.
For Android, Flutter’s current guide notes that an app using the C++ standard library may need to bundle libc++_shared.so. That is a platform-specific packaging concern, not a reason to treat one old per-platform loading recipe as the universal setup.

What the QR step does—and does not—provide
A QR code is a way to carry data optically. It can simplify device enrollment when a user can show one screen to another device, but the transfer medium alone does not establish how the data is protected, how long key material remains visible, or whether the receiver is trustworthy. The account describes transferring key material this way; it does not independently establish the cryptographic protocol or its resistance to interception, screenshots, backups, or compromised devices.

QR scanning and rendering can be implemented in software. The lightweight_barcode_scanner documentation describes scanner functionality, and qr_flutter documents QR rendering. Their existence does not show that KashIQ uses either package, and a typical software implementation does not inherently require a dedicated scanner or printer.
What the “quant math” claim establishes
The post names Kalman filters, Markov chains, and FFT among the methods associated with its spending analysis. Without verified code and a description of the statistical design, those names are not enough to determine exactly how the app uses them, whether they are appropriate for a particular financial prediction, or whether they produce useful results. They should be treated as the author’s account of the implementation, not as independently validated behavior.

The author also says processing takes under 100 milliseconds. The surfaced account does not specify a test device, workload, measurement method, or independent benchmark, so that figure is not a general performance expectation. Native code can be useful for a particular workload, but the available evidence does not show that C++ is inherently faster than Dart for KashIQ’s routines.

Keeping records on-device can reduce routine exposure to a service provider, but it is only one part of a security design. Encryption labels alone cannot establish that a financial app is safe. The post describes its database encryption with AES-256 language, but the available account does not independently verify the configuration or audit the implementation.

- Data location: Determine which records stay on the device and what is uploaded, including the backup blob and any operational metadata.
- Key handling: Understand how keys are generated, transferred, stored, rotated, and recovered if a device is lost.
- Recovery behavior: Establish whether a user can restore data without the original device, and what information or service that recovery requires.
- Threat model: Consider compromised devices, weak device credentials, backups, screenshots, and cloud account access—not just whether a server can read the uploaded blob.
- Verification: Look for implementation details, reproducible tests, and independent security review before treating architecture claims as guarantees.
These questions are useful for any local-first finance app. The article account alone does not answer them all, so it should be read as a description of an approach rather than a security audit.
When this architecture is a good fit
The combination can make sense when an app must remain useful without a network connection, has a measured reason to call native routines, and needs a deliberate way to enroll another device. The decisions should be made independently: use local persistence for offline behavior, introduce FFI only where native integration justifies its extra build and debugging surface, and choose a sync method whose data movement and recovery behavior match the privacy requirements.
If the requirement is literally no cloud dependency, the author’s described remote backup download does not meet it. If the goal is instead to keep readable records local while using cloud storage for encrypted backup blobs, the design is a different and narrower proposition; users still need evidence about key management and recovery to judge its protections.
