How a Cyberattack Spreads Through a Growing Business—and How to Interrupt It

A practical guide for growing businesses to reduce initial access, restrict lateral movement, detect suspicious activity, and restore safely after a cyberattack.

A cyberattack can begin with one phishing message, exposed remote-access service, or stolen password, then expand through accounts and connected systems. It does not always follow the same sequence: ransomware may appear late, after an attacker has already explored the network or accessed data. For a growing business, the practical goal is to make each stage harder, detect movement early, contain affected systems, and restore operations from backups that attackers cannot readily reach.

How an attack can move from one opening to business-wide impact

Growth often brings more cloud services, employee accounts, remote access, vendors, and connected systems. Those are normal features of a growing company, not proof that it is vulnerable. Risk rises when access reviews, system inventories, and response procedures do not keep pace with the business.

  1. Initial access: A phishing message, compromised account, vulnerable internet-facing service, or other opening may give an attacker a foothold. CISA’s StopRansomware Guide describes common access paths and prevention measures.
  2. Establishing access: The intruder may abuse stolen credentials, remote access, or other available tools to retain or expand access. An account with reused credentials or excessive permissions can make a small foothold more consequential.
  3. Discovery and lateral movement: Attackers may look for other accounts, connected systems, shared files, and valuable data, then move between them. A flat network or permissive connections can give them more room to reach systems beyond the initial device.
  4. Impact: An attacker may steal data, disrupt services, or deploy ransomware. Encryption may be a later stage, so noticing ransomware is not necessarily the moment the compromise began.
  5. Response and restoration: The business must determine what is affected, contain access and spread, communicate safely, and recover from known-clean systems and protected backups.

Make a concise inventory of critical systems, the data they hold, and the services and accounts they depend on. That map helps identify where stronger safeguards matter most and which systems should be restored first.

Interrupt the attack before or at initial access

Protect business email, cloud services, and remote access

Require multifactor authentication (MFA) for email, file storage, remote access, and especially privileged accounts. CISA advises businesses to aim for phishing-resistant MFA in its Require Multifactor Authentication guidance. The best available method depends on whether the service and identity provider support it and whether it can be deployed for both administrators and employees. For example, a compatible FIDO2 security key can provide a phishing-resistant option; check service compatibility before buying or rolling it out.

Apply least privilege: give each account only the access its work requires. Review administrator accounts and third-party access regularly, remove access that is no longer needed, and avoid shared credentials where individual accounts and accountability are possible.

Reduce exposed and outdated entry points

  • Update operating systems, applications, and internet-facing services promptly.
  • Remove unused remote-access tools and services; restrict those that must remain to authorized users and appropriate protections.
  • Train employees to recognize suspicious messages and to report unexpected login prompts, attachments, or account activity through a known channel.

Training is a reporting aid, not a substitute for technical safeguards. If an employee reports a suspicious message or account event, respond promptly rather than assuming no harm occurred.

Limit movement between systems

Segment the network so ordinary workstations, business services, and critical systems do not all have unrestricted paths to one another. Restrict traffic to what each area needs, and review the rules as systems and workflows change. Segmentation can limit lateral movement and reduce the reach of ransomware, but an unsafe connection or misconfiguration can undermine it.

Include cloud services, remote access, and vendor connections in the access map; network boundaries alone do not control every route into business data. CISA’s joint ransomware advisory discusses segmentation among defensive measures.

Use logs to spot suspicious movement and scope an intrusion

Retain and review logs from important hosts, network devices, and cloud services. Look for unusual sign-ins, unexpected file access, configuration changes, and connections between systems that do not normally communicate. Logs are most useful when the business knows which systems produce them, retains them long enough to investigate, and has a person or provider responsible for reviewing alerts.

CISA’s small-business logging guidance describes a red-team exercise in which analysis of network and log data helped detect lateral movement and access to sensitive data. Logging cannot prevent every intrusion, but it can help reveal activity and establish its scope.

What to do after a suspected phishing attack or account compromise

Do not wait for a ransom note to act. A suspicious message alone does not prove an account or system is compromised, but a reported password submission, unexpected login, or unusual account activity warrants prompt investigation.

  1. Use a known-safe way to coordinate. If email or collaboration accounts may be compromised, do not rely on them for sensitive response communications. Use a channel the response team believes is unaffected.
  2. Contain with coordination. Have an authorized administrator isolate affected devices or disable compromised accounts and sessions as appropriate. Coordinate containment with the people responsible for affected business systems so you do not create avoidable disruption or destroy useful evidence.
  3. Preserve what may help investigation. Record times, affected users and devices, alerts, and actions taken. Preserve relevant logs and evidence when feasible; avoid wiping or rebuilding systems before the response lead has considered investigation needs.
  4. Assess reach and notify the right parties. Check for related logins, changed settings, accessed files, and connections to other systems. Follow the organization’s incident plan and applicable contractual, legal, and regulatory notification obligations.
  5. Restore deliberately. Reconnect only systems considered clean. Restore from protected backups in order of business criticality, and validate that restored services are functioning before reopening access.

For a confirmed or potentially serious incident beyond internal capacity, involve a qualified incident-response professional or appropriate authorities. A managed provider can be useful, but assess its scope, access controls, monitoring and escalation practices, response capability, and fit with your systems rather than assuming every provider offers the same service.

Make recovery plans work before an incident

Protect backups from the systems they are meant to restore

Maintain offline, encrypted backups that cover critical data and configurations. A backup connected continuously with broad permissions may be exposed to the same attacker as production systems. An external drive can be one part of an offline rotation, but only if the process also provides appropriate isolation, encryption, sufficient coverage, and verified restoration.

Test restoring files and services, not just whether a backup job reports success. Record who can restore each system and the order required to bring essential business functions back. CISA’s StopRansomware Guide and joint advisory recommend protected backups and recovery preparation.

Assign responsibilities and exercise the response plan

Keep a basic incident plan with named decision-makers, technical responders, communications responsibilities, and contacts for outside help. Exercise it before a crisis: a short tabletop scenario can expose gaps such as an unavailable administrator, an untested backup, or uncertainty about who can authorize account shutdowns. CISA’s guide emphasizes preparing and maintaining an incident response plan.

Put the highest-impact actions first

  • Turn on MFA for email, remote access, cloud storage, and administrator accounts; favor phishing-resistant methods where supported.
  • Review privileged and third-party access, remove what is unnecessary, and patch exposed systems.
  • Identify critical systems and restrict unnecessary connections between network segments.
  • Ensure important logs are retained and assigned for review.
  • Confirm backups are encrypted and isolated from production access, then perform a restoration test.
  • Name response roles and practice the plan using a realistic account-compromise or ransomware scenario.

CISA’s 2023 small-business article reported $2.4 billion in cybercrime costs to small businesses in 2021 and said small businesses were three times more likely to be targeted than larger companies. Those are historical figures reported in that article, not current annual estimates or a newly measured rate; they underline why preparation matters without predicting an individual business’s likelihood of attack. See CISA’s small-business cybersecurity article.

This guidance is U.S.-oriented. Adapt controls and response steps to your systems, industry, contracts, and applicable jurisdiction.
