She had no plan to build a personal blog. In her anniversary account, she describes how that modest starting point grew into regular writing, a reported 380,000 reads, and conference invitations connected to her articles.
Why did she start writing on DEV?
Laskowska’s story began after a difficult period in her personal life and an injury interrupted her judo routine. In summer 2025, she was trying new activities when a friend’s LinkedIn post reminded her that she had long wanted to speak at JS Poland. She submitted a proposal. When an organizer asked for a recording of an earlier talk, she sent the one recording she had; she recalls receiving an invitation by phone about half an hour later. These events are her recollection, not independently verified.

For the talk’s About Me slide, she wanted a link that showed her work. She did not want to build and maintain a blog of her own, so she chose an existing publishing platform. As she put it, “I chose DEV because I’d always liked… the layout.” She had also come across articles there that felt interesting and approachable. The platform gave her somewhere to publish without first taking on the separate project of creating a personal site.
How did a one-off need become a writing habit?
She started without a fixed content plan
At first, Laskowska expected to publish about once a week, and less often if she lost interest. Instead, she wrote more frequently to find out what readers responded to. Her early work was exploratory: she tried different subjects and started series she did not finish. She describes that period as chaotic, not as a carefully designed strategy.

That distinction matters for new writers. Her account does not suggest that every experiment will attract an audience or lead to a speaking opportunity. It shows that she began publishing before she had settled on a niche or a dependable format. In her view, an imperfect start was acceptable.
She learned to balance interest and readership
Over time, she came to think of writing as a balance between topics she wanted to explore and subjects readers would find useful. She recognizes that a technical, expert-level post may draw fewer readers than a provocative or broadly accessible one, and does not expect every article to go viral. She also argues that writers making claims about senior developers or technical expertise should support that authority with real experience and work.

What did publishing on DEV lead to?
The role of the blog changed for Laskowska. It began as material for a conference slide, then became evidence of her activity in the developer community when she submitted conference proposals. Later, she says organizers found her DEV articles and invited her to speak about their subjects. In her account, that helped both sides: organizers could see what she wrote about, and she knew which topic had been accepted.
The anniversary article’s subtitle reports “Started for a slide, reached 380k reads.” That is the read count presented by the article; it does not provide an independent audit or explain the measurement method. Her conference invitations and readership are personal outcomes, not results she promises other writers will achieve.

Why did community participation matter?
Laskowska values replying to substantive comments when she can, and says the discussions under her posts can be better than the posts themselves. In a reply included with the anniversary discussion, she said she would advise her first-week self to spend time reading other people’s posts and interacting with the community, not only writing.
For someone beginning on a publishing platform, that is a useful reminder: publishing is one way to take part, but conversations with other writers and readers can also shape the experience. This is her advice from personal experience, rather than a guarantee that commenting will produce a particular audience or career result.

What is her plan for the next year?
In her September 29, 2026 anniversary reflection, Laskowska says she plans to publish “roughly one post a week.” She also mentions YouTube as a possible extension, but has not decided whether to pursue it. The pace is her stated intention, not a universal schedule that new writers need to follow.

- Start with a concrete need. A link for one conference slide was enough reason to publish.
- Choose a setup that fits the work you want to do. Laskowska preferred an existing platform to building a personal blog.
- Let early posts teach you what you want to write. Her first experiments did not require a polished strategy or a perfect series plan.
- Consider readers without treating reach as the only measure of success. She accepts that specialist writing and broadly appealing posts may perform differently.
- Take part in the community around your work. Reading and replying were part of what she came to value.
Her account is a first-person reflection, not a recipe for reproducing her read count or speaking invitations. Read the full anniversary post and its discussion on DEV Community.
