In the 2024 method, light activates the catalyst, and the radical intermediate is trapped by an oxidant rather than simply given hydrogen back. The result is an asymmetric oxidation—not a reversible hydrogen swap.
What the catalyst changes
A meso diol contains stereocenters but is achiral overall because its structure has internal symmetry. At a carbon next to an alcohol, the two hydrogen-bearing sites can be enantiotopic: reacting at one rather than the other breaks that symmetry and selects a chiral outcome.

Lam, Dhankhar, Lahdenperä, and Phipps reported the method in a paper published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society on November 26, 2024. Their catalyst is derived from Cinchona alkaloids. After photooxidation, its chiral aminium radical cation preferentially abstracts one of the enantiotopic hydrogens. That hydrogen-atom abstraction is the stereochemistry-selecting step in the reported mechanism. Read the paper.

- Light activates the catalytic system. A photocatalyst oxidizes the Cinchona-derived catalyst, generating the aminium radical cation.
- The chiral catalyst selects a hydrogen. It abstracts one of the two enantiotopic C–H hydrogens beside an alcohol group in the meso diol. This creates an enantioenriched ketyl radical.
- An oxidant intercepts the radical. The reported method uses DIAD or oxygen to trap the intermediate.
- Elimination forms the product. Subsequent in situ elimination gives an enantioenriched hydroxyketone.
Because an oxidant intercepts the radical, the process does not simply remove hydrogen and replace it with hydrogen. The carbon framework is oxidized to a different product class.

What the reported results show
For meso cyclohexane-1,2-diol, a selected condition used epi-NHBoc-DHCN (10 mol%), 4CzIPN (5 mol%), Bu4N·H2PO4 (25 mol%), DIAD, acetonitrile, and blue light. The paper reports 54% yield and 82% enantiomeric excess (ee) at +10 °C. Lowering the reaction temperature to −35 °C raised the reported ee to 91%. These are the authors’ laboratory results, not independent measurements. Experimental details and results.
The study reports cyclic and acyclic meso diols, with examples that establish as many as four stereocenters in one operation. Its scope includes substrates bearing alkenes, esters, acetals, nitriles, and protected amines. Results depend on substrate: some bulky examples had lower enantioselectivity, and a five-membered diol example had lower yield and required telescoped derivatization for isolation. The reported examples therefore demonstrate a useful range, not uniform performance across all meso diols.

How this differs from meso-diol epimerization
A separate Cinchona-derived method, reported in Science in 2024, also begins with selective hydrogen-atom abstraction from meso diols, but a thiol then returns hydrogen to the radical intermediate. That route produces enantioselective epimerization: it changes stereochemistry while retaining the diol product type. It can also be combined with Giese carbon–carbon bond formation. Cambridge’s record of the epimerization study.
The distinction is the radical’s fate. In the 2024 oxidation method, DIAD or oxygen traps the intermediate and elimination yields a hydroxyketone. In the epimerization method, thiol-mediated hydrogen return yields an epimerized diol. Related reports address 1,3-diol epimerization and deracemization of N-acyl-1,2-aminoalcohols; those are separate transformations, not alternative names for the meso-diol oxidation.

This is a specialist synthetic-chemistry method, not a consumer technique or a demonstrated industrial process. Its reported conditions use a photocatalyst, a chiral catalyst, reagents, solvent, and blue light; the publication establishes laboratory proof of concept. Chemists considering a particular substrate need to assess its fit against the reported scope and account for substrate-dependent yield and selectivity.
