How a Boron Compound Linked Two Nitrogen Molecules into a Four-Nitrogen Chain

Chemists reported using a boron compound called a borylene to join two nitrogen molecules into a four-nitrogen chain. The result was a molecular synthesis, not an industrial process.

A 2019 study reported a way to join two molecules of nitrogen gas into a four-nitrogen chain using an unusual boron compound called a borylene. The reaction produced a dark-blue molecular compound near ambient conditions, according to Chemistry World’s report. It was a laboratory synthesis result—not a demonstrated industrial process or a practical source of nitrogen-chain materials.

What the chemists made

Nitrogen gas consists of N2 molecules, whose atoms are strongly bonded and relatively unreactive. The reported reaction joined two such molecules, creating an N4 unit: a chain of four nitrogen atoms known as a tetrazene. The N4 chain was part of a larger compound described as a dark-blue bis-borylene.

Chemistry World characterized the work as a first of its kind in its 25 March 2019 report. That is the report’s novelty claim; it should not be read as a current survey of all subsequent research.

How the borylene helped

The reaction used a borylene, a boron-containing species described as an analogue of a carbene, together with nitrogen gas and potassium graphite as a reducing agent. In this account, the boron compound mediated the formation of the N4 link.

The report said the transformation took place close to ambient conditions, contrasting it with other nitrogen-chain-forming reactions that require extreme heat or pressure. It did not provide a comparable set of alternative reactions or enough experimental detail to quantify that comparison. Exact reagent quantities, yields, full conditions, and a detailed mechanism should therefore not be inferred from the summary.

What the structure revealed

X-ray crystallography showed a planar structure, which the report interpreted as suggesting a delocalized network of π electrons. It described the N4 unit as resembling an organic tetrazene: the central N–N bond was a classic double bond, while the two terminal N–N linkages were closer in length to single bonds.

These are structural observations and an interpretation of the characterized molecule. They do not establish a method for producing bulk nitrogen chains or a useful nitrogen-containing product at industrial scale.

Why linking nitrogen molecules matters

Because nitrogen gas is so strongly bonded, turning it into other nitrogen compounds is a longstanding challenge in chemistry. The report placed the result in the broader context of activating dinitrogen and constructing chains of nitrogen atoms. It also noted that ammonia made through the Haber–Bosch process can serve as a starting point for compounds including hydrazine, azides, and tetrazenes.
