How a Boron Cluster Mimics Transition-Metal Bonding

A gas-phase B9O− cluster combines a boronyl bond with an unusual interaction between central boron and an aromatic B7 unit, echoing selected transition-metal bonding motifs.

A gas-phase boron cluster shows how an atom of boron can form two unusual bonding interactions associated with transition-metal chemistry. The anion B9O− has an umbrella-like structure in which a central boron bonds to a boronyl ligand and interacts with an aromatic seven-boron unit. This is a bonding discovery—not evidence that boron has become a transition metal or that the cluster is already a catalyst.

What makes the B9O− cluster unusual?

The species reported in 2021 is an anion containing nine boron atoms and one oxygen atom, including a boronyl ligand (BO). In the most stable isomer discussed, the central boron connects to that boronyl ligand and also interacts with an η7-B7 unit: a seven-boron ligand bound through its cluster of atoms. Together, these features give the structure an umbrella-like shape.

The authors’ bonding analysis describes the central boron as sharing valence electrons with the B7 unit. That interaction, alongside the boronyl bond, contributes to a doubly aromatic electronic system and helps explain the structure’s stability. Here, “aromatic” describes the distribution of electrons in the cluster; it does not mean the structure is an ordinary carbon-based aromatic molecule.

How was the structure identified?

The researchers produced B9O− clusters by laser-vaporising a bismuth-based target. Residual impurities supplied oxygen. They used photoelectron spectroscopy to study the anions, and the spectra indicated contributions from two isomers. The team then calculated structures and simulated spectra; the simulations for the isomers agreed well with the experimental spectra, according to Chemistry World’s report.

In what sense is the bonding metallomimetic?

“Metallomimetic” means that a non-metal system exhibits a bonding feature reminiscent of transition-metal chemistry. It is a comparison of particular bonding behaviors, not a claim that boron is a transition metal or reproduces all transition-metal chemistry.

  • Bonding to the boronyl ligand: The central boron forms a σ-bond to BO. The report places this alongside known boron chemistry in which a monovalent boron in a borylene dicarbonyl complex binds two carbon monoxide ligands through donor–acceptor bonds, an arrangement compared with transition-metal carbonyl chemistry.
  • Interaction with an aromatic ligand: Transition metals can form sandwich-type complexes with aromatic arene ligands. In B9O−, the central boron instead interacts with a boron-based aromatic η7-B7 ligand. Chemistry World described this as an unprecedented bonding motif at the time of its 2021 report.

The analogy is about the kinds of bonding involved and the ligand interaction—not equivalent reactivity, performance, or applications.

Does this mean the cluster is a catalyst?

No catalytic turnover or substrate activation by this particular B9O− cluster is established in the report. The demonstrated result is its structure and bonding interpretation, supported by spectroscopy and calculations.

Julia Stauber, an inorganic chemist at the University of California, Los Angeles, described the cluster’s possible significance prospectively: “The unusual structural and electronic properties of the [(η7-B7)-B-BO]− anion are certain to provide insight into new and exciting classes of metallomimetic boron clusters that have the potential to display reactivity and coordination properties that have perhaps only been realised in the context of transition metal chemistry.” The key qualification is “potential to display”: this is a prospect for future chemistry, not a claim that those properties have already been demonstrated for this anion.

How does it fit into broader p-block chemistry?

The finding sits near a wider field called element–ligand cooperativity, in which a p-block element and its surrounding molecular framework work together during substrate activation or a catalytic cycle. A 2020 review by Yael Ginzburg, Lukas M. Sigmund and Lutz Greb discusses how such systems can be compared with transition-metal ligand cooperativity, while distinguishing them conceptually from intramolecular frustrated Lewis pair chemistry. That context helps explain why chemists are interested in unusual boron bonding, but it does not establish catalytic behavior for B9O−. Read the review.

What the result establishes—and what it does not

  • Established: A gas-phase B9O− anion has an unusual umbrella-like isomer whose spectral evidence is consistent with calculated spectra and whose bonding analysis includes a central boron–boronyl σ-bond and an interaction with η7-B7.
  • Not established: That the cluster is a usable catalyst, performs substrate activation, or has practical coordination or reactivity properties matching those of transition-metal compounds.
