How a 23-Player Halo Match Runs on a Handheld: Native Port, Emulation and Networking Explained

The RG35XX H Halo demonstration used a native OpenCE ARM64 port, not Xbox emulation. Here is what the 23-player result proves, how networking works and what installation requires.

The 23-player match was not running an emulated Xbox. It used an unofficial ARM64 port of Halo: Combat Evolved, built from the OpenCE community decompilation and compiled for the Anbernic RG35XX H’s Allwinner H700 processor and Mali-G31 GPU. The developer reported joining a public Blood Gulch Slayer game with 22 other players at 50–60 frames per second, usually 58–60.

That is a developer-reported result from one handheld, firmware setup and online session—not a guaranteed frame rate, an official player-capacity test or proof that every H700 device will behave the same way. The interesting part is the execution model: reconstructed game code runs natively on ARM64, while OpenCE supplies the multiplayer browser, hosting and connection features.

What the demonstration actually establishes

The reported session took place in a public Blood Gulch Slayer match. The project author says they played alongside 22 other people, making 23 players in total. Notebookcheck described the same demonstration on October 8, 2026. Neither account establishes an official Halo: Combat Evolved capacity limit, a stress-tested maximum or typical server population.

The reported performance was 50–60 fps, with most of the session sitting at 58–60 fps. Those numbers apply to that multiplayer match on the RG35XX H. They are not an independent benchmark, and they should not be mixed with the project’s separate campaign or menu measurements, which were taken under different conditions.

Why this is a native port rather than Xbox emulation

Decompilation supplies code that can be rebuilt

OpenCE is based on community decompilation of the original Xbox build. Decompilation reconstructs understandable program code and data structures from an existing binary; it does not reproduce an Xbox motherboard in software. The reconstructed code can then be adapted, compiled and linked for a different processor and operating system.

For the H700 handheld, the project builds an ARM64 host program. That host loads the game’s compiled image, connects SDL calls to the firmware’s SDL2 implementation and sends graphics work through an OpenGL ES path tailored to the Mali GPU. The handheld therefore executes ARM64 instructions on its own CPU instead of asking a virtual Xbox CPU to interpret or translate the original machine code.

The project maintainer, kirklandsig, summarizes the distinction directly: “There is no emulation: no xemu, no Box64, no Wine.” That statement describes this port’s execution path. It does not make the project official, and it does not mean every part of the original Xbox environment has been reproduced.

Why native execution helps a small device

Emulation normally has to model another machine’s processor, memory behavior, graphics interfaces, timing and peripherals while the game is running. A native port removes much of that overhead because the game logic is compiled for the handheld’s ARM64 CPU and its rendering calls are adapted to the device’s graphics API.

The H700 is still a low-power chip, but a native build can use its available CPU and Mali-G31 GPU more directly. That is why the result is technically plausible without implying that the RG35XX H could emulate an Xbox at the same quality. The software path, optimization work and compatibility layer matter as much as the raw chip specification.

How multiplayer networking works in OpenCE

Public servers and local games

The OpenCE build includes a public server browser and supports hosting or joining over the internet and a local network. Compatible OpenCE builds can connect from PCs or other supported handhelds. In the demonstrated case, the handheld joined an existing public game; the developer did not personally verify hosting from the handheld in that update.

The project also documents network campaign co-op between compatible OpenCE builds. That feature is separate from the Blood Gulch test, and the cited handheld report did not verify online campaign co-op. Treat the capability as a documented project feature rather than as a result demonstrated on the RG35XX H.

What the connection does not tell you

A large player list does not reveal latency, packet loss, server geography or how long the session remained stable. No independent latency dataset or multi-device population study was identified for this demonstration. A public lobby can be full while a particular player’s route to it remains poor, and a smooth session on one network does not guarantee the same result on cellular tethering, congested Wi-Fi or a distant server.

Native OpenCE port versus Xbox emulation

Both approaches can put Halo multiplayer on modern hardware, but they solve different engineering problems and have different setup requirements.

Aspect OpenCE native port on an H700 handheld xemu Xbox emulation
How the game executes Decompiled game code is adapted and compiled for ARM64, with SDL2 and OpenGL ES integration for the handheld. A software emulator models Xbox hardware so the original Xbox program can run in a virtual console.
Method used in the reported 23-player match Yes. The RG35XX H joined through an OpenCE build. No. xemu was not the mechanism behind that session.
Typical target hardware Allwinner H700 handhelds with compatible firmware and graphics support. A computer capable of running xemu and the required Xbox software environment.
Multiplayer options OpenCE public browser, internet or local-network hosting and joining, plus documented compatible-build campaign co-op. NAT, UDP Tunnel or Bridged Adapter network backends.
Configuration caveat Compatibility depends on the handheld model, firmware, port package and supplied game data. Bridging over Wi-Fi may fail because some access points and clients do not support multiple MAC addresses per connection.
Evidence available here One developer-reported handheld multiplayer session at the stated frame rate. Network-backend documentation, not a directly comparable benchmark for this handheld match.

xemu’s UDP Tunnel encapsulates traffic to create a virtual LAN among xemu users. Bridged Adapter can expose emulated Xbox networking to a real Xbox on the local network or to a service such as XLink Kai, but that is a separate setup. XLink Kai is a peer-to-peer service for LAN-based gaming over its network; its live site lists Halo 2 as an active Xbox game. Neither xemu nor XLink Kai was identified as the networking path for the RG35XX H Halo CE session.

Hardware, firmware and compatibility boundaries

The project targets handhelds built around the Allwinner H700. The RG35XX H is the specifically tested device associated with the demonstration. The project’s compatibility notes distinguish tested hardware from user-reported, expected-to-work and untested models, so a device appearing on a list is not equivalent to a confirmed result.

What you need before installing

  • Compatible hardware: an RG35XX H or another H700 handheld that the current project release supports.
  • Supported firmware: the project’s captured instructions target Knulli, with PortMaster releases also described.
  • Your own game data: the release contains no copyrighted game files. The repository specifies a North American or European Xbox disc image, or the extracted Xbox maps required by its setup.
  • Storage: about 3 GB free on the card for extracted map data, the game’s initial cache and temporary room for the disc image during setup.
  • Network access: internet access to browse or join public games, or a reachable local network for LAN play.
  • Backup space: enough room to make a copy of the card before changing firmware or adding experimental software.

PC-version game files do not work with this setup. The project expects data from the Xbox release, and the user is responsible for obtaining and using that data lawfully.

Installation workflow without brittle commands

  1. Identify the exact handheld and firmware. Confirm that the device uses the H700 platform and note the installed firmware version. Check the OpenCE release notes for that combination before changing anything.
  2. Back up the microSD card. Copy personal saves and configuration files, and keep a restorable image if the firmware documentation supports one. Experimental ports can require a clean reinstall after a failed package change.
  3. Install or update the supported firmware. Follow the current Knulli or PortMaster procedure for the device. Do not assume that a package built for one firmware can be placed in another firmware’s directory structure.
  4. Prepare the Xbox game data. Use the project’s documented extraction method with your original North American or European Xbox disc image. Keep the disc image available until extraction and first-launch checks finish, because the setup may need temporary working space.
  5. Copy the OpenCE package and data to the card. Place files in the locations specified by the matching release documentation, then verify that roughly 3 GB remains free.
  6. Launch locally before going online. Start the game, confirm that menus load and test a campaign or local map. This separates missing-data and graphics problems from network problems.
  7. Open the multiplayer browser. Connect the handheld to a stable network, refresh the public list and join a compatible OpenCE server. For LAN play, ensure every participant is using a compatible build and can reach the host.
  8. Record the working combination. Note the firmware, port release, game-data version and network type. Those details make rollback and troubleshooting much easier when a later update changes compatibility.

Common failure modes and practical checks

Symptom Likely check
The port is missing from the launcher Confirm that the package matches the firmware, that the files are in the release’s required locations and that the launcher has refreshed its game list.
The game reports missing maps or data Recheck that the data came from an Xbox disc image rather than the PC edition, and repeat the extraction steps from the current documentation.
The handheld boots but performance is poor Compare the device and firmware with the project’s tested-status notes. Close background tasks, verify that the port is using the intended graphics path and avoid treating the reported 58–60 fps as a guarantee.
No public servers appear Test ordinary internet access, confirm the clock and network connection, refresh the browser and check whether the server uses a compatible OpenCE build.
You can join but cannot host The cited developer test covered joining, not handheld hosting. Check the current hosting instructions, local firewall or router rules and whether the firmware package exposes the required network service.
Campaign co-op fails Ensure all players use compatible OpenCE builds and the same supported game-data format. The handheld campaign-co-op path was not verified in the reported multiplayer test.

How to interpret the 50–60 fps claim

The frame-rate figure is useful evidence that one optimized native build can deliver near-60-fps gameplay during a busy public match on this hardware. It is not a promise for every map, firmware version, refresh-rate setting, server, thermal condition or background process.

Frame rate and network quality are also different measurements. A handheld can render at 60 fps while network delay produces late hit registration, or it can maintain a stable connection while rendering dips occur. The cited report does not provide frame-time logs, temperature data, latency measurements or a repeatable benchmark procedure, so those questions remain open.

What this achievement does—and does not—mean

  • It demonstrates that a decompilation-based native ARM64 port can make Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer playable on a small H700 handheld.
  • It shows that OpenCE can connect a handheld to a public multiplayer session with many participants, subject to compatible builds and network conditions.
  • It does not show that the RG35XX H emulates an Xbox, that every H700 model supports the port, or that 23 players is the software’s tested maximum.
  • It does not establish that handheld hosting, online campaign co-op or any particular latency level was verified in the same session.
  • It is an unofficial community project, not a release endorsed by Microsoft, Bungie or Halo Studios.

Bottom line for prospective users

If you own an RG35XX H, the credible explanation is straightforward: OpenCE turns reconstructed Halo code into a native ARM64 application, uses the H700’s CPU and Mali-G31 graphics hardware directly, and supplies its own multiplayer networking layer. The 23-player Blood Gulch game is an impressive single-session demonstration of that approach, not evidence that a handheld is secretly running an Xbox emulator.

Plan around the practical limits: use a supported firmware and release, supply compatible Xbox game data legally, reserve about 3 GB on the card, and expect compatibility and networking results to depend on the exact device and setup.
