The study described a research method, not a commercial or clinical diagnostic.
How does the cholera toxin sensor work?
Quan Cheng and co-authors built the experimental sensor from redox-functionalized diacetylene lipid microstructures displaying ganglioside GM1, a cell-surface ligand that cholera toxin binds. They attached the structures to a gold electrode. When toxin bound to GM1, the Faradaic current associated with electron transfer at the electrode–microstructure interface changed. The researchers measured that change using differential pulse voltammetry.

The microstructures were platelet-shaped and about 240 nm in size, based on dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. That figure describes the experimental structures, not a finished sensor device.
What did the study report?
Working range
The paper reported a working concentration range of 1.0 × 10−8 to 5.0 × 10−7 M under the study’s laboratory conditions. This is an analytical result from that experiment; it is not a measure of clinical sensitivity or diagnostic accuracy.

Control and fouling
The researchers used bovine serum albumin as a control and reported no interference with the Faradaic response in the same concentration range. They also reported that the design bypassed protein surface fouling and proposed a binding-regulated electron-hopping mechanism. These are findings and interpretation from the laboratory study, not evidence of performance in patient samples or field conditions.
Was it a diagnostic product?
The 2004 paper and contemporaneous news report document a research biosensor. They do not establish that it became a commercial diagnostic, was clinically or field validated, or received regulatory clearance. The sources also do not establish its present status, so it should not be described as an available cholera test.

The paper alone also cannot support a current comparison with other toxin-detection methods. A meaningful comparison would need evidence on recognition chemistry, analytical range, selectivity controls, sample matrix, time to result, equipment requirements, and validation setting.

The original paper, “Functional lipid microstructures immobilized on a gold electrode for voltammetric biosensing of cholera toxin,” was written by Quan Cheng, Shimin Zhu, Jie Song, and Na Zhang. It appeared in Analyst, volume 129, pages 309–314, and the Royal Society of Chemistry lists its first publication date as 15 March 2004. Cheng and Zhang were affiliated with the University of California, Riverside; Zhu and Song with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Ian Farrell’s Chemistry World report, published on 1 May 2004 under the title “New sensor detects cholera toxin,” identified Cheng as the development lead. Farrell quoted Cheng as saying: “There is a growing need for new analytical techniques capable of fast, sensitive and reliable detection of pathogenic agents”. That statement expresses the research lead’s motivation; it is not a measured result of the sensor study.
