On gaming earbuds, “2.4GHz wireless” usually means a dedicated link to the product’s included USB dongle; Bluetooth is the standardized connection commonly used with phones and other Bluetooth devices. They are not different frequency bands: Bluetooth also operates in the 2.4GHz band. The practical difference is the connection method, supported devices, delay, and how each earbud model handles audio from multiple sources.
What “2.4GHz” and Bluetooth mean
“2.4GHz” names a radio-frequency band, not a single wireless protocol. Bluetooth Low Energy (LE), for example, operates in the 2.4GHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band. The Bluetooth Core Specification describes an operating range of 2400 MHz to 2483.5 MHz for Bluetooth LE, with 40 RF channels centered from 2402 MHz to 2480 MHz at 2 MHz spacing. Bluetooth uses frequency hopping to help deal with interference and fading. Bluetooth Core Specification

When a gaming-earbud maker advertises “2.4GHz wireless,” it generally means the earbuds connect to a matching USB dongle using the maker’s product-specific wireless link. The dongle plugs into a compatible host and presents an audio connection; it is not a generic Bluetooth adapter, and a random USB radio dongle should not be assumed to work as a replacement. Bluetooth, by contrast, is a standardized technology for connecting to Bluetooth-capable phones, computers and other hosts. JBL Quantum TWS SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds

- With a dongle: The console, computer or handheld sends audio over USB to the compatible dongle. The dongle relays it over the earbuds’ dedicated wireless link; the earbuds receive and decode the stream, then play it through their drivers.
- With Bluetooth: The host and earbuds establish a Bluetooth connection and send audio using the supported Bluetooth audio features. The earbud radio still operates in the 2.4GHz band, even though the connection is called Bluetooth.
The exact host support and implementation vary by product. Check the earbud maker’s compatibility information and the device’s available ports rather than assuming that any USB-equipped console or computer will support every feature.

Why gaming earbuds offer a dongle connection
Makers position the dongle link for responsive gaming and for connecting to hosts that may not offer the Bluetooth audio experience the earbuds need. A direct USB connection also avoids relying on the host’s Bluetooth audio stack. That does not mean every dongle link has identical delay, or that every Bluetooth connection is too slow for games.
Latency depends on the product and the audio path. Edifier advertises the GX05 at “as low as 15 ms” and cautions that real experience can vary depending on testing equipment. That is Edifier’s product claim, not an independent measurement or a figure that can be applied to other earbuds. No controlled, independent latency comparison is established here for the example models. Edifier GX05

Bluetooth audio delay depends on the technology and devices
Bluetooth is not a single, fixed-latency audio mode. The Bluetooth SIG explains that Classic Audio uses asynchronous ACL transport and buffering that may introduce delay. Its newer LE Audio architecture uses time-synchronized LE Isochronous Channels to reduce buffering and shorten delays. The SIG describes LE Audio as a newer Bluetooth audio architecture built around features including isochronous channels and the LC3 codec. Bluetooth SIG: LE Audio Bluetooth Core Specification
Those standards do not guarantee that a particular pair of earbuds will support LE Audio or deliver a particular gaming latency. The earbuds and the host both need compatible support, and their implementation matters. Check the specifications for both devices instead of inferring performance from the word “Bluetooth” or a Bluetooth version number alone.

Can earbuds use Bluetooth and the dongle at the same time?
“Dual connection” can describe different behaviors. A product may remember or maintain two links and let you switch between them; it may route an incoming phone call over Bluetooth while game audio uses the dongle; or it may support simultaneous audio from both sources. Keeping two connections available does not, by itself, mean the earbuds mix and play both audio streams together.
Switching sources and taking calls
JBL says Quantum TWS can connect through its USB-C dongle and Bluetooth. Its support instructions describe switching between those sources with a triple tap, and JBL says an incoming call can be handled over Bluetooth before returning to the 2.4GHz link. These behaviors describe source switching and call handling; they should not be read as a promise that game and phone audio are always mixed together. JBL Quantum TWS source switching JBL Quantum TWS

How to choose the right connection for your setup
- Check the host and connector: Confirm support for your specific console, computer or handheld, and whether it has the required USB-C port. If you need USB-A, check whether the package includes an adapter; SteelSeries lists a USB-C-to-USB-A converter for supported platforms.
- Decide what you want Bluetooth for: If you also use the earbuds with a phone, look for Bluetooth support and confirm how source switching or call handling works.
- Verify what “dual” means: Look for explicit documentation of switching, call routing or mixing. Do not treat two supported connections as proof of simultaneous playback.
- Check platform-specific extras: Confirm microphone, spatial-audio and companion-app features on your actual platform. JBL says some QuantumSURROUND functionality requires a PC with JBL QuantumENGINE.
- Compare battery figures carefully: Check runtime by connection mode and with features such as noise control enabled, where the manufacturer provides those details. Different manufacturers’ figures are not directly comparable unless the conditions match.
- Treat latency numbers as product-specific claims: Check who published the figure and any stated testing qualification. A marketing comparison or an “as low as” result is not a universal performance guarantee.
How to switch between Bluetooth and a 2.4GHz wireless connection
The control depends on the model; there is no universal button sequence. For JBL Quantum TWS, JBL’s support instructions say to triple tap to switch between Bluetooth and the 2.4GHz dongle connection. For other earbuds, follow the maker’s current instructions and check whether the source must be disconnected, selected in an app, or changed with an earbud control.
