If you suspect fire, carbon monoxide, a break-in, or another emergency, leave and call your local emergency number. If you are the owner or an authorized user and there is no emergency, contact the alarm’s keyholder, monitoring company, installer, or device supplier for the approved way to silence it or recover access. There is no reliable universal code-free method for an unspecified alarm.
What should you do first?
- Look for signs of an emergency without putting yourself at risk. If there is smoke, fire, a carbon-monoxide concern, evidence of forced entry, or immediate danger, leave the premises and call the local emergency number. Don’t enter or investigate if doing so could put you in danger. Ask the Police advises that “It is not advisable to put yourself in danger by making checks yourself.”
- Identify the alarm type. An intruder alarm and a smoke or fire alarm have different risks and reset procedures. Check the panel, device label, or paperwork only if it is safe to do so.
- If you are authorized to manage it, contact the responsible provider. Call the owner or designated keyholder, monitoring center, installer, or device supplier. Use the contact number on account documents, the panel label, or the provider’s official website.
- If the alarm is monitored, ask whether a dispatch is active. Ask the monitoring station to cancel a dispatch if one has been requested, and follow its identity-verification process. Stopping the sounder alone may not cancel a response.
If you own or manage the alarm
Call the keyholder or monitoring company
Explain that the alarm is sounding and you do not have the code. Ask the provider to identify the system, verify your authority, and guide you through its approved recovery or service process. Keep the keypad code separate from the password used to verify your identity over the phone: the Los Angeles Police Department warns that the keypad code “usually IS NOT THE SAME” as the phone-verification password.

For a monitored false alarm, contact the monitoring station directly. Austin Police Department’s alarm guidance says, “Do not call 911 to cancel alarm activations.” Use the monitoring company’s process to report a false alarm or request cancellation; use emergency services for an actual or suspected emergency.
Use the installer or device supplier for model-specific help
If the keyholder or monitoring center cannot restore access, ask the installer or supplier for an authorized technician or the exact instructions for your make and model. The right recovery procedure depends on the system. Do not try generic codes, bypass methods, wiring changes, or destructive disconnection.

If you are a neighbor or passerby
Do not enter the property or try to silence or disable the alarm. Contact the owner or a known keyholder if you can. If you see signs of a crime, fire, or immediate danger, call the local emergency number. For prolonged nuisance noise without an apparent emergency, use the relevant local council or non-emergency reporting channel.
If a fire alarm is sounding
Treat a possible fire as real until it is safely ruled out. If there is smoke or fire, leave and call your local emergency number. Only use a Silence or Reset control when you are certain there is no emergency, and follow the manual for that exact device. Singapore Civil Defence Force guidance, for example, says to evacuate and call 995 if a fire is spreading quickly; 995 is specific to Singapore, so use the appropriate emergency number where you are.

If the apparent cause has gone but the alarm continues or signals a fault, contact the device supplier or authorized service provider. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service says its crews will not reset a premises alarm on behalf of its manager; the manager must reset it or arrange an on-call alarm company.
Why location and system details matter
The exact emergency number, alarm reset sequence, monitoring response, and local rules depend on where you are and what system is installed. UK government guidance describes limited council entry powers in designated alarm notification areas, while Sutton Council describes its own 20-minute reporting threshold. These are local procedures, not rules that apply everywhere.
