A VPN protects only the traffic it actually encrypts, and it shifts some trust from the hotel network to the VPN provider. If a phone hotspot is available and suitable, the FBI recommends using it instead of hotel Wi-Fi.
What a VPN adds on hotel Wi-Fi
A VPN routes your internet traffic through servers operated by the VPN provider. If the VPN encrypts the relevant traffic between your device and its server, someone monitoring the local Wi-Fi network should have a harder time reading that protected data. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that a VPN can obscure traffic content from a public Wi-Fi provider, but the protection depends on what the app actually encrypts: some VPN apps use protocols that do not encrypt traffic, or protect only some of it. This matters in a hotel because many unrelated guests share a network that visitors cannot readily inspect or control. The FBI and Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warn that an attacker could monitor browsing, redirect guests to a false sign-in page, or set up a lookalike hotspot. A room number or password required to join the hotel network does not, by itself, prove that the connection is secure. What the VPN does not protect you from
Unencrypted or excluded traffic
Do not assume every app or connection is covered just because the VPN indicator is on. The FTC notes that an app may encrypt only some traffic. Check the VPN’s documentation and settings to confirm that it protects the apps and activity you plan to use.

Untrustworthy VPN providers
A VPN changes whom you must trust: traffic is routed through the provider’s servers, so the provider may be able to see information about your internet activity. The FTC cautions that a VPN generally does not make you anonymous; websites can still identify you through details you submit, and some VPN apps have requested unexpected permissions or shared data with third parties. Before relying on an app, review its permissions, encryption claims, terms, and privacy policy.
Deceptive websites and unsafe actions
A VPN cannot make a dishonest site trustworthy or prevent you from giving information to a scammer. Keep HTTPS enabled and heed browser security or certificate warnings. The FTC advises checking for HTTPS or a lock icon, but an encrypted connection only protects data in transit to that site; scammers can also operate encrypted websites. Choose between hotel Wi-Fi and a phone hotspot

The available guidance does not establish which option will have better coverage, cost less, or work better in a particular country; those depend on your carrier, location, and data plan. The FBI’s recommendation is to use a phone hotspot instead of hotel Wi-Fi if possible. For work, follow your employer’s security policy, which may require a particular VPN or connection method. - Confirm the network. Ask hotel staff or check an official hotel notice for the exact Wi-Fi name and sign-in process before connecting. Criminals can create similarly named hotspots; CISA’s public Wi-Fi PDF search-result text also advises checking hotspot names and login procedures.
- Use the approved protection for work. Follow employer rules for work devices, and use a reputable VPN when required or appropriate. The FBI recommends a reputable VPN for telework when possible.
- Keep browser protections in place. Use HTTPS and do not bypass browser security or certificate warnings. A lock icon is not an endorsement of the site.
- Reduce unwanted connections. Turn off auto-reconnect for the hotel network, keep device software updated, make the device non-discoverable, and disable Bluetooth when you are not using it.
- Limit sensitive activity. Avoid banking or entering sensitive personal information on hotel Wi-Fi when possible. If you must access sensitive accounts, the FBI advises using multi-factor authentication.
- Use a hotspot if it works for you. Choose your phone’s hotspot instead of hotel Wi-Fi when available and suitable.
How safe is it in practice?
The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because encryption is now widespread, but that general guidance does not certify a particular hotel network. A reputable VPN can add protection against local network observation when it encrypts the relevant traffic; it is not a substitute for verifying the network, using HTTPS, keeping software current, or being cautious about where you enter sensitive information.
