Hostnames and Reverse DNS (PTR) Records on a VPS Explained

A practical guide to setting a VPS FQDN, matching forward and reverse DNS, finding who controls PTR records, testing with dig, and fixing IPv4, IPv6 and mail-related rDNS problems.

Set one stable fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for your VPS, point its forward DNS record at the server, and have the VPS or IP-address owner set a matching PTR record. For an IPv4 address such as 192.0.2.10, the reverse name is 10.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa; a correct PTR returns a name such as server.example.com.. You normally edit the A or AAAA record at your domain-DNS provider, but the hosting or cloud provider controls the PTR. Finish by testing both directions and confirming that the returned hostname resolves to the same address.

What a VPS hostname, forward DNS and reverse DNS mean

A VPS hostname is the name the server uses to identify itself on the network. For Internet services, use a fully qualified domain name (FQDN), not a short label such as vps1. An example is server.example.com. The name should be stable: changing it after configuring mail, TLS certificates, monitoring or access controls creates avoidable repair work.

Forward DNS: name to address

Forward DNS answers the usual question: “What address belongs to this name?” An A record maps an IPv4 address to the FQDN, while an AAAA record maps an IPv6 address. If server.example.com runs at 192.0.2.10, its authoritative DNS zone should contain an A record with that value. Add an AAAA record only when the VPS actually has a usable IPv6 address and service connectivity.

Reverse DNS: address to name

Reverse DNS (rDNS) uses a PTR record to answer the opposite question: “What hostname is assigned to this address?” IPv4 reverse names are under in-addr.arpa; IPv6 reverse names are under ip6.arpa. The address owner publishes the PTR in the authoritative reverse zone.

For 192.0.2.10, reverse the four octets and append the suffix: 10.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa. A PTR query for that name should return server.example.com., including the DNS name’s terminal dot when displayed as a fully qualified value.

Why the PTR record matters

  • Readable logs and diagnostics: Log viewers, traceroutes and security tools can show a name instead of an otherwise opaque address.
  • Mail-server reputation: SMTP receivers commonly inspect reverse DNS. A missing or implausible PTR can make delivery less reliable, although a PTR is not a guarantee of inbox placement.
  • Operational consistency: A single name used by the operating system, TLS configuration and service banners makes incidents easier to diagnose.
  • Policy checks: Some networks reject connections whose address has no reverse name or whose reverse and forward records disagree.

PTR is optional in the DNS protocol, and it is only one part of mail identity. SPF authorizes sending systems, DKIM signs message content, and DMARC tells receivers how to apply those signals. A matching PTR cannot replace those controls.

Who can change a VPS PTR record?

The owner of the domain controls its forward DNS zone. The owner of the IP address controls the reverse zone, which is usually your VPS, cloud or hosting provider. Editing your domain’s DNS dashboard changes an A or AAAA record; it does not change the PTR for an address supplied by somebody else.

Self-service provider panels

Many providers expose a field labelled Reverse DNS, rDNS or PTR beside each assigned address. Select the IPv4 or IPv6 address, enter the FQDN and save. The field may be in the instance’s networking page, an IP-address inventory or an advanced settings panel rather than in the domain-management screen.

When support or delegation is required

Some providers do not permit direct edits. Ask support to set the PTR and provide the exact address, desired FQDN and confirmation that the FQDN’s A or AAAA record already points back to that address. If you own a routed address block, ask whether the provider can delegate the reverse zone to your authoritative name servers. Delegation is different from changing one address: it makes your DNS infrastructure authoritative for a portion of the reverse namespace.

Plan the name before changing anything

  • Choose one canonical FQDN, such as server.example.com, that you control for the life of the VPS.
  • Use a name whose forward record can remain valid if the VPS is moved to another address; update the record and PTR together during a migration.
  • Decide whether the server will use IPv4, IPv6 or both. Do not publish an AAAA record for an address that is blocked by a firewall or not routed to the VPS.
  • For mail, use the same intended identity in the operating system hostname, the SMTP HELO/EHLO setting and the PTR target unless your mail design documents a deliberate exception.

Configure a matching hostname and DNS records

  1. Set the operating-system hostname. Use your distribution’s hostname tool or system settings to assign the FQDN. Confirm with hostname --fqdn (Linux) or the equivalent command for your operating system. Keep the local hosts file consistent where your operating system requires it.
  2. Create the forward record. At the authoritative DNS provider for your domain, create an A record for server.example.com pointing to the VPS IPv4 address. Create an AAAA record for the VPS IPv6 address only if IPv6 is configured end to end.
  3. Open the provider’s reverse-DNS control. In the VPS or IP-address management page, locate Reverse DNS, rDNS or PTR. If no such control exists, open a support request asking who operates the reverse zone and whether delegation is available.
  4. Enter exactly the same FQDN. Set the PTR value for the address to server.example.com. Use a hostname, not an IP address, and avoid a trailing alias that is actually a CNAME. DNS guidance in RFC 1912 recommends that a PTR point to a valid address record rather than a CNAME.
  5. Allow publication. The provider must write the reverse zone, and recursive resolvers may retain the old answer until its TTL expires. A saved value in a control panel is not proof that public DNS has updated.
  6. Test forward resolution. Run dig +short server.example.com A and, when applicable, dig +short server.example.com AAAA. The output should contain the intended address.
  7. Test reverse resolution. Run dig +short -x 192.0.2.10 or host 192.0.2.10. Replace the example address with yours. The result should be the chosen FQDN.
  8. Perform a forward-confirmed reverse check. Query the returned name again and verify that its A or AAAA data includes the original address. Fix any mismatch before deploying mail or other reputation-sensitive services.

How to test publication rather than a local cache

A resolver can show an old answer even after the authoritative server has changed. Compare an authoritative response with a public recursive response:

Check Command What a healthy result means
IPv4 forward dig +short server.example.com A The VPS IPv4 address is returned.
IPv6 forward dig +short server.example.com AAAA The configured, reachable VPS IPv6 address is returned.
IPv4 reverse dig +short -x 192.0.2.10 The PTR returns the intended FQDN.
Reverse with host host 192.0.2.10 The resolver reports the PTR target in readable form.
Authoritative comparison dig @authoritative-server 10.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa PTR The reverse-zone authority already publishes the new value; a different recursive answer indicates caching.

Find the authoritative name servers for your domain with dig NS example.com. The reverse-zone authority is normally operated by the address provider; its name servers may not be the same as your domain’s name servers.

IPv4 and IPv6 reverse DNS details

IPv4 octet reversal

IPv4 reverse names reverse the address one octet at a time. The address 192.0.2.10 becomes 10.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa. A commonly delegated /24 network such as 198.51.100.0/24 uses the reverse zone 100.51.198.in-addr.arpa. Smaller, non-octet allocations may use provider-specific RFC 2317 classless-delegation arrangements, so do not assume you can create an entire reverse zone for a partial block.

IPv6 nibble reversal

IPv6 reverse DNS reverses every hexadecimal nibble of the address and appends ip6.arpa. The resulting names are long and error-prone to type manually. Use the provider’s IPv6 PTR editor or a reliable DNS tool to generate the reverse name. Confirm whether the provider supports IPv6 PTR independently of IPv4; an interface may offer one and not the other.

Multiple addresses

A VPS with several addresses can have a distinct PTR for each address. Assign names that identify the intended service or role, then create matching A or AAAA records for every name. Do not give unrelated addresses the same PTR simply because they belong to one server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mail-specific checks

Before pointing an SMTP service at the Internet, verify that the sending address has a PTR, that the PTR name resolves forward to the same address, and that the SMTP server announces a consistent FQDN in HELO or EHLO. Also publish SPF for the sending domain, enable DKIM signing and publish a DMARC policy appropriate to your deployment. Receivers evaluate these signals independently; passing one does not compensate for failing another.

Some providers restrict outbound port 25 or require an abuse review before mail is permitted. That policy is separate from DNS. If messages are deferred or rejected, inspect the SMTP response, your provider’s network policy and the domain’s authentication records rather than repeatedly changing the PTR.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The forward lookup works but reverse lookup is empty

  • You edited only the domain’s A or AAAA record. Ask the IP owner to set the PTR.
  • The provider has a separate IP inventory page; check there for a Reverse DNS field.
  • The change is still propagating. Compare an authoritative query with a recursive resolver and wait for the previous TTL to expire.

The PTR returns the wrong hostname

  • Check that you changed the correct address, especially when the VPS has several IPv4 or IPv6 assignments.
  • Recalculate the IPv4 octet order or IPv6 nibble order rather than copying a forward name into a reverse zone.
  • Ask support whether an old provider template or a delegated reverse zone is overriding the value you entered.

Forward-confirmed reverse DNS fails

  • Create or correct the A record for the PTR target. For IPv6, check the AAAA record and actual reachability.
  • Use a fully qualified hostname and avoid a PTR target that is a CNAME. Point it directly to a name with an address record.
  • Remove stale duplicate records if your design requires one canonical name. Multiple legitimate A records are possible, but every returned address must be intentional.

The provider offers no PTR option

Send support the address, requested FQDN and evidence that forward DNS is ready. Ask whether the address block is delegated to you, whether the provider sets PTRs manually, and whether IPv4 and IPv6 follow different procedures. If you need to administer reverse zones yourself, choose a service that supports delegation for the prefix you control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mail still fails after PTR is correct

Check HELO/EHLO, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, port-25 restrictions, blocklists and the receiving domain’s SMTP response. A correct PTR improves consistency but does not establish authorization or message authentication.

Choosing VPS infrastructure for reverse DNS

Reverse-DNS capability should be a selection criterion before you deploy. Compare providers on these practical points:

Decision axis Questions to ask
Self-service editing Can you set and change PTR values per address without opening a ticket?
Address-family coverage Are IPv4 and IPv6 PTR records both supported, and are the workflows documented separately?
Delegation Can a routed /24, /16 or classless allocation be delegated to your name servers?
Verification tools Does the panel show the saved value, propagation state or DNS query results?
Support workflow What information is required for a manual change, and how are abuse or mail requests handled?
Mail suitability Are outbound SMTP ports restricted, and does the provider document reputation and rDNS requirements?

For a single VPS, a provider-managed PTR is usually simpler than operating a delegated reverse zone. Delegation becomes useful when you control many addresses and need independent automation or naming policy.

Changing a hostname or moving a VPS

Plan DNS and service changes together. Lower TTLs before a planned move if your DNS provider permits it, update the A or AAAA record, change the PTR through the new address owner, and then verify both directions from outside the old network. Keep the old address’s PTR in place until traffic and mail queues have drained, unless the provider is reclaiming the address. Update TLS certificates, monitoring labels, firewall rules, SMTP identity and documentation that contain the old FQDN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When retiring an address, remove forward records that no longer point to it and request deletion or reassignment of its PTR. Leaving a misleading reverse name on a recycled address can confuse incident responders and mail receivers.

Operational checklist

  • One documented canonical FQDN is assigned to the VPS.
  • A records exist for every intended IPv4 address, and AAAA records exist only for usable IPv6 addresses.
  • The IP owner has set matching PTR records for each address.
  • Forward-confirmed reverse queries succeed from both authoritative and public recursive resolvers.
  • The operating-system hostname and, where relevant, SMTP HELO/EHLO use the intended FQDN.
  • Mail deployments also have SPF, DKIM and DMARC, with provider port and abuse policies checked.
  • Changes, addresses, TTLs and provider support contacts are recorded for future migration or incident response.

The essential rule is simple: the domain owner publishes forward DNS, the address owner publishes reverse DNS, and both sides must describe the same server. Treat the PTR as part of a coordinated naming and service-identity configuration rather than as an isolated setting.
