Neither provider is a universal winner: choose managed website hosting if you want a guided, bundled setup, or choose a cloud platform if you want configurable virtual machines or a managed application platform. The starting prices often compared for their VPS products buy very different resources, so compare the workload and the full cost over your intended term—not just the monthly figure.
First, compare the same kind of hosting
The comparison depends on what you mean by hosting. A managed web-hosting plan is organized around running websites, with site-oriented features and plan limits. A virtual private server (VPS) or cloud virtual machine gives you a configurable server. DigitalOcean also offers App Platform, a separate managed service. These products do not carry the same management responsibilities or bundle the same things.

Hostinger’s head-to-head page, dated October 1, 2026, compares VPS plans—not its managed web-hosting plans against every DigitalOcean product. Its feature and price comparisons are vendor claims, not an independent evaluation. DigitalOcean’s own product pages describe Droplets and App Platform separately. How do the starting VPS prices compare?
On the comparison page dated October 1, 2026, Hostinger lists its starting VPS at $6.49 per month, with 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 50 GB NVMe storage. The same Hostinger comparison lists DigitalOcean’s starting VPS at $4 per month, with 1 vCPU, 512 MB RAM and 10 GB NVMe storage. These are not equivalent configurations: the lower DigitalOcean entry price comes with substantially less listed memory and storage.
DigitalOcean’s own pricing page lists a Basic Droplet starting at $4 monthly with 1 vCPU, 512 MiB memory, 500 GiB transfer and 10 GiB SSD storage. It describes monthly price caps alongside usage-based billing. Effective January 1, 2026, Droplets are billed per second, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, whichever is higher. The comparison-page figures and DigitalOcean’s separate pricing-page specifications use different labels and should not be treated as interchangeable beyond the overlapping starting price and resource details. See DigitalOcean’s current Droplet pricing and billing details.
What if you want managed website hosting?
For a website owner who does not want to begin by sizing and configuring a cloud VM, managed web hosting is a different category from a VPS. The US managed-hosting page reviewed lists a Premium offer at $2.99 per month when purchased for 48 months, renewing at $10.99 per month. That listed plan includes three websites, a domain for one year, 20 GB SSD storage, weekly backups and a 30-day money-back guarantee. These are examples from the US page, not universal prices or terms; the displayed introductory price depends on the long upfront term. Check the US managed web-hosting offer.

DigitalOcean’s App Platform is a distinct option for managed application deployment rather than a conventional website-hosting plan. Its official page lists three free static sites and a Basic plan starting at $5 per month. DigitalOcean also describes a one-click WordPress Droplet configured with a LAMP stack and firewall support programs; a preconfigured deployment does not by itself mean ongoing server administration is included. Choose managed website hosting when
- Your main task is hosting one or more websites and you prefer a plan structured around site limits and bundled website features.
- You value a guided hosting setup over choosing and maintaining a virtual machine configuration.
- You have checked the exact plan’s renewal rate, included backup schedule and other terms for your region.
Choose a Droplet when
- You need a configurable cloud VM and can manage—or have someone manage—the server and its software.
- You want usage-oriented billing and have calculated the cost for the actual time and resources you expect to use.
- You need to select server resources around an application rather than choose a website-oriented bundle.
Consider App Platform when
- You want DigitalOcean’s managed application platform rather than a raw VM.
- Your application fits the platform’s current configuration and pricing; confirm those details before committing.
These are fit-based distinctions drawn from the products’ descriptions, not guarantees that every task on one service is easier or that every DigitalOcean product requires the same degree of server administration.
How to calculate the real cost
Start with the workload, then price the resources and services it actually needs. A low entry price is not meaningful if its listed memory, storage or transfer allowance does not fit your site or application.
- Set the workload: estimate required vCPU, memory, storage, transfer, region, traffic and any database or application dependencies.
- Match the product category: compare managed website hosting with managed website hosting, or a VPS with a VM offering. Treat App Platform as its own managed-platform option.
- Calculate the intended period: include the upfront term, introductory and renewal prices, metered or per-second usage, and any monthly cap. For a short-lived VM, account for DigitalOcean’s per-second billing and minimum charge.
- Add required extras: check whether backups, snapshots, domains, control-panel or software licenses, and other services are included or separately charged on the precise plan.
- Verify the checkout terms: prices and features can vary by region and change over time; confirm taxes, billing duration and plan-level conditions before purchase.
Check safeguards and support plan by plan
Hostinger’s dated VPS comparison reports daily backups, snapshots, free weekly backups, a money-back guarantee, DDoS protection, a managed firewall, malware scanning and other features. These are claims in Hostinger’s own comparison, and the page does not establish that every item applies to every plan or region. Confirm the current terms for the specific plan before relying on them. Hostinger’s comparison page.

Backups, snapshots, firewalls, DDoS protection and malware scanning address different needs; they are not interchangeable measures of overall security. DigitalOcean lists cloud firewalls and provides separate product documentation and support resources. Compare recovery options, backup frequency and retention, security controls, support access and refund terms for the exact product and plan you are considering. DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls.
Is either provider faster or more reliable?
The provider pages cited here do not provide independent, controlled performance or uptime results that establish a winner. The listed prices and specifications describe plans; they are not benchmarks. Choose based on the product model, resources, operating requirements and verified plan terms rather than assuming one provider is faster or more reliable.
