Choose HostGator if you want conventional shared hosting and less server administration for a lower-traffic personal or small-business website. Choose DigitalOcean if you need a configurable cloud virtual machine, root access, or compute options for a technical workload—and can manage the server yourself or arrange help. They sell different hosting models, so neither is a universal winner on speed or cost.
What is the practical difference?
HostGator shared hosting places customer sites on a server whose resources are shared. The provider manages that shared server, which reduces the amount of infrastructure work you need to do. The trade-off is limited control: shared hosting has no root access and allows only limited custom installations. HostGator describes it as a fit for beginner-friendly, lower-traffic sites. DigitalOcean offers virtual machines called Droplets. You choose a configuration, including shared CPU or dedicated CPU options, and have more control over the server environment. That flexibility also means more responsibility for configuration and administration. Review the management and support terms for the specific product you choose. DigitalOcean Droplets

Choose HostGator shared hosting for a simpler, lower-traffic site
Shared hosting is a reasonable starting point for a basic personal site, blog, or small organization’s website when you do not need custom server software or root-level control. HostGator’s shared-server model is intended to reduce server-maintenance demands, but its resource and installation limits matter if your site has specialized requirements.
Choose DigitalOcean when you need configurable infrastructure
DigitalOcean’s Droplet options cover use cases ranging from websites and blogs to e-commerce, databases, SaaS, microservices, gaming, video streaming, and machine-learning workloads. The right choice depends on the resources and configuration your workload actually needs—not simply on whether it is a website. DigitalOcean associates lower-traffic sites and apps with Basic shared-CPU Droplets, and medium-to-high-traffic web servers, e-commerce, databases, and SaaS with General Purpose dedicated-CPU Droplets. Do you need shared hosting or a VPS?
“VPS” does not settle the decision by itself. The important questions are whether you need root access, how much server configuration your application requires, and who will handle system administration. HostGator says VPS hosting adds flexibility for software installations and server configuration. In its guidance, the company says: “The main point of upgrading to a VPS from a shared or reseller account would be flexibility in software installations, Apache configurations, and other custom software (Ventrilo, FFmpeg).” HostGator’s hosting-plan guidance

More control is useful only if you can use it. If you do not want to configure or maintain a server, shared hosting may be a better operational fit. If you need a VPS because of a specific software or configuration requirement, make sure you can administer it or have technical support lined up. HostGator also cautions that a VPS is not a fix for an overly resource-intensive account; identify the bottleneck and required resources before upgrading.

Compare the full term you would actually buy, the renewal price, and the resources the site needs. A first-term promotion does not show what hosting will cost later, and a low starting price is not meaningful if the selected configuration lacks necessary resources.

These figures are not an apples-to-apples comparison: the services, configurations, billing periods, and management responsibilities differ. Prices and plan terms can change, so check the providers’ current pages before purchasing. HostGator’s chart distinguishes introductory rates from regular prices; use the regular rate to understand the cost after an introductory term. HostGator hosting plans and pricing
