Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For most fintech dashboards, keep privileged database access on a trusted backend and expose only the data the dashboard needs. Use direct database connections when they are confined to a controlled backend or BI service and the database can meet the workload’s freshness, latency, and concurrency needs. The right choice depends on the access boundary and measured workload—not on whether an API or database connection is inherently faster or safer.
First, define what “hosted query API” means
The phrase can describe different architectures, and they should not be treated as interchangeable:

- A vendor-managed database API exposes a provider’s REST, GraphQL, or other interface to database-backed data.
- An application-owned query API authenticates users and offers a deliberately limited set of dashboard operations, such as retrieving an account balance or a date-bounded transaction summary.
- A database proxy or pooler manages database connections. It may improve connection handling without defining the application’s authorization rules or query contract.
- Direct database access means a trusted backend or BI client connects using the database protocol rather than requesting data through an application-facing API.
The key comparison is usually client-to-API versus trusted service-to-database, not “API versus putting database credentials in a browser.” Supabase’s Postgres connection guidance illustrates the distinction: it describes frontend Data API use with Row Level Security (RLS) enabled, direct connections for persistent backends, transaction pooling for serverless or edge workloads, and session pooling for some BI-tool connections. Those are provider-specific options, not a universal connection rule.

How the main approaches compare
| Approach | When it fits | Main advantage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scoped application API | The dashboard needs a defined set of operations and user- or tenant-aware access. | The service can authenticate the user, enforce an explicit authorization policy, and avoid exposing privileged database credentials to clients. | The API becomes another service to design, operate, monitor, and scale. Its presence alone does not prove that authorization is correct. |
| Direct connection from a trusted backend or BI service | The connecting system is controlled, network and identity controls are strong, and the database can handle the query pattern. | It can avoid an extra application-facing hop and use database or BI capabilities directly. | Credential scope, identity propagation, connection management, and the impact of interactive reads on the database need explicit controls. |
| Pooler or database proxy | Connection behavior is a bottleneck or the runtime creates many short-lived connections. | It can manage connection setup and reuse while retaining a database-oriented access path. | Pooling behavior depends on the mode and client. For example, Supabase says its transaction mode does not support prepared statements, so driver configuration matters. |
| Read replica, cache, import, or hybrid serving model | Repeated dashboard queries compete with transactional work, or the dashboard can tolerate a defined degree of staleness. | It can reduce pressure on the primary transactional source or avoid rerunning the same live query for every interaction. | Replication lag, refresh schedules, cache invalidation, and consistency behavior become part of the product’s freshness contract. |
These approaches can be combined. A common design keeps privileged database access in a backend, exposes narrow dashboard endpoints, and sends expensive analytical queries to a read-optimized store or governed BI model.

What determines dashboard freshness and latency
A live query does not automatically mean a dashboard is fast, nor does cached data automatically mean it is too stale. Measure the complete path: the dashboard action, any API or gateway, connection acquisition, network transit, database execution, and rendering.
Live queries and imported data
In Power BI, DirectQuery does not import the model’s data at load; visuals issue one or more queries to the underlying source. Microsoft notes that visual refresh latency depends on the source and network or gateway overhead, and that source changes appear after an action that triggers a requery. In Import mode, the model uses cached data and reflects source changes only after refresh. Microsoft’s product guidance says, “Use import by default,” while identifying cases for DirectQuery such as frequently changing data, impractical full ingestion, source-enforced security, or sovereignty constraints. That is product guidance, not a neutral rule that settles every architecture decision. Power BI also describes hybrid tables, aggregations, and Direct Lake; capabilities and refresh behavior vary by mode, connector, and licensing.

Pooling depends on the runtime
A persistent service, a serverless function, and a BI gateway do not create connections in the same way. Supabase recommends direct connections for persistent backends, shared transaction pooling for serverless or edge workloads with many short-lived connections, and session pooling in some IPv4-only or third-party-client cases. Check the current provider documentation and project plan, and verify the selected mode against the driver and workload. These recommendations and constraints apply to Supabase’s options; they do not establish universal connection limits for other databases.
Caching changes consistency as well as speed
Cloudflare documents a pattern in which connection setup happens near Workers, connections are pooled near the origin database, and non-mutating read queries can be cached. Its documentation also says writes do not invalidate cached read results. If a user must immediately see their own recent write, a cached read may violate that expectation unless the application uses an appropriate fresh-read path or another explicit invalidation strategy. Set the cache’s freshness behavior to match the dashboard’s promise, rather than treating caching as a transparent optimization.

Protect the transaction system from analytical load
Dashboard filters and aggregates can repeatedly scan or summarize transaction data. AWS’s banking-core reference architecture gives one example of workload isolation: it replicates transaction records in real time to a secondary database intended for scanning and searching, then streams data to downstream services and analytics. This illustrates a pattern, not a universal architecture or a guarantee of a particular replication lag. A production system needs its own measured and communicated freshness target.
Choose using workload and control requirements
Make the decision against a stated workload rather than a generic claim that APIs or direct connections are better.

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- Set the freshness target. State the maximum acceptable age of dashboard data. Distinguish when a source transaction commits from when the dashboard refreshes or re-queries.
- Benchmark representative interactions. Test common filters, summaries, and drill-downs under expected peak concurrency. Track p95 and p99 response time, cold starts, connection acquisition, network or gateway time, and database execution separately. No like-for-like fintech dashboard benchmark in the cited platform material establishes a general winner.
- Map identity to data access. Decide where user identity is authenticated and how tenant and account boundaries are enforced. With a frontend Data API, Supabase requires RLS to be enabled and policies to permit the intended access. With direct access, define credential scope and how downstream services preserve or enforce user identity. Validate tenant isolation, logging, and network controls in the actual deployment; an API layer alone is not proof of security.
- Inspect query shape and source impact. Determine whether repeated live aggregates are suitable for the transactional database. If not, evaluate source-side aggregation, a read replica, caching, import, or a hybrid model. AWS’s secondary-database example and Power BI’s aggregation and hybrid options illustrate alternatives, but do not specify which one fits a particular workload.
- Specify read-after-write behavior. Decide whether a user needs to see a transaction they just submitted immediately. Document any replica lag, import refresh interval, or cache behavior that could delay visibility, and provide a fresh-read route when required.
- Include the operational model. Account for pool sizing, API ownership, monitoring, failover, replication, dashboard-service limits, and refresh infrastructure. Estimate cost from the actual plan and workload; the available platform material does not establish a generic cost winner.
Practical architecture choices
Use a scoped API when the dashboard needs controlled application operations
Keep privileged database credentials in a trusted service. Have that service authenticate callers, apply account- and tenant-level authorization, and return only the fields and aggregates required by the dashboard. Prefer a small, intentional query contract over allowing clients to submit unrestricted database queries. This can make the authorization boundary clearer, but it still requires correct policies, credential handling, and operational controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse direct access when the client is genuinely trusted and the workload is suitable
A backend or governed BI service can connect directly if its network path, identity model, credential scope, connection behavior, and database capacity are acceptable. This is materially different from exposing privileged database credentials to an untrusted browser. If the service is serverless or creates many short-lived connections, select and test a compatible pooler rather than assuming a direct connection is the right connection mode.

Separate analytics when live dashboard reads threaten transactional work
For expensive scans or high read concurrency, consider an analytical or search-oriented secondary store, precomputed aggregates, or a BI model that imports or combines data. These options trade operational complexity and potentially delayed data for workload isolation or fewer repeated source queries. Establish acceptable lag and refresh behavior before choosing them.
Limits of the available platform examples
The Supabase, Microsoft, Cloudflare, and AWS materials describe specific product capabilities or reference architectures; they do not provide a like-for-like fintech dashboard benchmark, prove a universal security outcome, or establish a latency or cost winner. Confirm current provider behavior, licensing and plan limits, regional requirements, and workload performance in the intended deployment. The choice does not replace a review of which legal or regulatory controls apply to a particular fintech.
