The drive achieves this by reporting a smaller maximum address to the operating system than its true native maximum, so the space beyond that boundary is not available to ordinary reads and writes. NIST’s CSRC glossary lists the term as “Host Protected Area” and points to NIST SP 800-86 for context.
How an HPA hides drive space
Every ATA drive has a native maximum address, which is the last sector the hardware can address. A host can query that value and then tell the drive to report a lower one as its user-addressable maximum. Whatever lies above the lower limit becomes the HPA. The operating system sees a drive that appears smaller than it really is, and it will not partition or format the hidden range.

Two ATA command families do the work, as described in the HDAT2 v4.8.1 user manual and in the paper “Methods of discovery and exploitation of Host Protected Areas on IDE storage devices that conform to ATAPI-4”:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- READ NATIVE MAX ADDRESS returns the drive’s true highest address.
- SET MAX ADDRESS sets a lower address that the drive then reports to the host.
Drives that support 48-bit addressing have extended variants of both commands. Exact behavior depends on the drive’s feature set and on which command variant is used.

The HDAT2 manual defines the term this way: “HPA is defined as a reserved area for data storage outside the normal operating file system.” That is the manual’s wording, not NIST’s.
What an HPA is used for
An HPA is a drive-level feature meant for specialized storage. Sources mention several uses:

- Configuration information and similar data kept outside the user’s file system.
- Diagnostic utilities and boot records, as described in the HDAT2 manual.
- Recovery tools. A U.S. patent application published September 23, 2004 describes Phoenix FirstWare Space, which used an HPA to hold critical data and applications that could be reached when the main operating system was not working.
These are examples of how the feature has been used. They do not show that every drive, computer or SSD contains an HPA, and no reliable figure for how common HPAs are has been established.
HPA compared with a hidden partition and DCO
People often confuse these three. They change visibility at different layers.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
| Concept | Layer | What changes | Effect on native capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host Protected Area | Drive address limit | The reported user-addressable maximum is lowered, leaving a reserved range above it | Native maximum stays the same; the reported maximum is reduced |
| Hidden partition | Partition table / logical layout | A partition is marked or arranged so it is not normally shown | None. The HDAT2 manual states a hidden partition is not an HPA |
| Device Configuration Overlay (DCO) | Device configuration | Can alter the apparent capacity or the available features of the device | Can change what the device presents. The manual treats it as separate from HPA |
What an HPA is not
- Not encryption. The sources show only that the area sits outside ordinary host addressability. They do not establish cryptographic protection, so an HPA is not a guarantee that its contents are secure.
- Not universally accessible. The HDAT2 manual notes that some operations do not work over non-ATA interfaces such as USB or FireWire. Whether you can see or change an HPA depends on the interface, the operating system and the tool.
Risks of changing the maximum address
Altering a drive’s reported maximum changes which sectors are accessible. The HDAT2 manual warns that certain drive operations performed outside BIOS-controlled boot or shutdown can damage file systems. Treat these commands as expert tasks, not routine settings, and back up data first.
