It puts three things side by side: the market’s implied chance, your model’s estimate, and the runner’s odds path over a defined period. A runner is worth investigating when those views disagree; the disagreement itself does not show that the model is right or that a wager is profitable.
Here, “cold-horse radar” means an analytical watchlist, not a standardized racing term or product. A “cold” candidate is a runner whose independently estimated chance is higher than the market-implied chance. A “drifter” is a runner whose odds have lengthened under a stated definition. They may be the same runner, but the terms are not interchangeable: odds movement is a market observation, while a model-market gap is a comparison of estimates.

What should the radar flag?
Separate the signal into three fields instead of collapsing it into a single “hot” or “cold” label:
- Market baseline: the probability implied by a specified bookmaker quote, bookmaker average, exchange price, or official starting price. Identify which one you use and how you handle margin.
- Model estimate: your own probability for the runner to win, generated using information available at the time of the estimate.
- Price trajectory: how the quoted odds changed over a stated interval, including the source of the quotes and whether the move persisted or reversed.
A radar can flag a model-market gap for review, a substantial shortening or lengthening, or both. Keep those flags distinct. A shortening does not prove that the market has found an edge, and a drift does not prove that a runner is mispriced.

How should a steam move be defined?
Choose the market, reference prices, time window, and threshold before classifying a move. “Steam” is not a universal measurement: a percentage change in one bookmaker’s quote is not directly equivalent to a change in an average across several bookmakers or an exchange price.
One bounded example comes from Racing-Odds Labs’ “Do Steamers Actually Win?”, published 6 July 2026. The study recorded 4.2 million price points from 13 bookmakers for UK and Irish races between 16 March and 2 July 2026. It covered 4,135 races and analyzed 8,630 runners that were priced by at least four bookmakers and came under starter’s orders. For its analysis, a steamer’s average price shortened by at least 20% between the average opening and final pre-race price; a heavy drifter’s average price lengthened by at least 20%. That 20% cutoff is the study’s operational definition, not a general racing standard.
Racing-Odds Labs reported that 24.0% of its steamer group won, against an opening-odds-implied win rate of 12.9%; the group’s final-odds-implied rate was 20.8%. Heavy drifters won at a reported rate of 3.4%. These are results from that study’s sample and method, not a guarantee about another jurisdiction, future period, or odds feed. The vendor notes its bookmaker averages can differ slightly from official starting prices. It also reports implied probabilities without removing bookmaker margin, and says its stable control group finished below its implied figure because of that margin.

The results show an association in this particular sample, not that the move caused a win or that following it yields a durable edge. The study discusses market confidence, bookmaker liability, and information such as stable whispers as possible explanations; it does not separately establish those causes.
How do you compare odds with a model probability?
For decimal odds, a raw implied probability is the reciprocal of the price: 4.0 implies 25% before margin adjustment. In a bookmaker market, the raw implied probabilities across all runners generally sum to more than 100% because of the overround. If you normalize each runner’s raw probability by the sum across the field, you get a proportional, margin-adjusted market baseline. State which approach you use: raw probabilities and normalized probabilities answer different questions, and normalization is an assumption rather than a universal correction.
For example, suppose a hypothetical runner has decimal odds of 4.0 and a model estimate of 30%. The raw market-implied probability is 25%, creating a five-percentage-point gap before any margin treatment. That is a prompt to check the model, market, and prices—not evidence that the runner is a value bet. Compare the model and market for the same outcome, race, and timestamp; do not compare a bookmaker quote with an exchange price as if they had identical liquidity or margin.

What odds data should the radar record?
A move is only interpretable when you can reconstruct what was quoted and when. Keep a record for every observation with:
- Race and runner identifiers, jurisdiction, race code, race grade, and field context.
- Market type and outcome: for example, a runner-to-win market rather than a different bet type.
- Bookmaker or exchange, quoted price, and timestamp, including the time zone if feeds use different conventions.
- Whether the observation is an opening quote, a later quote, a closing quote, an exchange price, or an official starting price.
- The move calculation’s starting point, end point, interval, and threshold.
- Whether the figure is a single quote, an average across named sources, or an exchange observation, and how the average is formed.
- Whether the runner started and how non-starters, missing quotes, and incomplete fields are handled.
Do not splice opening prices from one source with closing prices from another without labeling the change in coverage. Thin or intermittent quotes can produce apparent swings that do not represent a stable market view. Record whether a move is broad across sources or isolated to one quote; those are different signals.
Why track a price path instead of only the closing quote?
A final price compresses a sequence of market decisions into one observation. In a 2006 study, Johnson, Jones, and Tang used closing prices and time-indexed price movements in a conditional-logit model of horse-race winning probabilities. Their abstract reports that closing prices did not fully incorporate market price information, particularly information less readily discernable to participants. This supports examining the path as well as the final quote, but it does not validate a modern radar or establish that a particular move can be traded profitably.

Track at least the direction, size, and persistence of a move over a predefined window. A price that shortens steadily across sources is not the same pattern as a brief shortening followed by a reversal. A 2019 study on prediction-market forecasts describes possible overreaction after price movements and proposes a method for adjusting market-implied forecasts. That makes reversal and overreaction sensible failure modes to investigate; it does not mean every steam move is noise or every reversal creates an opportunity.

Odds, implied probabilities, and their reliability depend on what market produced them. Keep the following comparison axes visible when investigating a model-market disagreement:
- Jurisdiction and race code: findings from UK and Irish racing in a spring-to-summer 2026 sample cannot automatically be carried over to other countries or race types.
- Market and margin: bookmaker prices, exchange prices, and official starting prices are not interchangeable. Record overround or other margin treatment and do not assume one correction fits every market.
- Race grade and field: market structure can differ across race contexts. A 2013 Oxford Handbook chapter examining Betfair starting-price overround across 2,184 UK races from 2008–2010 reports a positive relationship between race grade and exchange overround.
- Runner’s odds position: favourite-longshot bias is a recognized subject in UK Flat Racing research. Compare model-market gaps by odds rank or favourite-versus-longshot position rather than assuming the same interpretation applies across the field.
- Coverage and timing: compare how many bookmakers or exchange observations are included, how frequently prices are sampled, how timestamps are assigned, and what counts as opening or closing.
The Annual Review of Financial Economics survey “Pari-Mutuel Betting Markets: Racetracks and Lotteries Revisited” reviews efficiency, pricing, mispricing, syndicates, behavioral biases, and optimization approaches. It is useful context for treating a betting market as an information-rich benchmark without assuming that market prices are perfect.

How can you test whether the radar is trustworthy?
Keep model development separate from evaluation. If you tune thresholds, choose features, or select a model using the same races used to report its results, the apparent performance may reflect those choices rather than a repeatable signal. Evaluate on races and a time period not used to fit or select the system, and report the geography, race codes, dates, market coverage, and runner-inclusion rules.
- Freeze the decision time. Define when the probability is generated and which prices are available then. Do not let later prices leak into the model input for an earlier prediction.
- Make groups before checking outcomes. For example, group runners by predicted-probability bands or by the size and direction of the model-market gap.
- Compare predictions with observed frequencies. In each group, report the number of predictions and how often runners won. A probability estimate is calibrated only if observed frequencies align with predicted probabilities over an adequate sample; a handful of winners is not enough to demonstrate that.
- Keep a separate untouched test period. Report its sample size and scope, and avoid changing the method after seeing its outcomes and then presenting the same period as an independent test.
- Inspect the important splits. Check results by jurisdiction, race code, odds rank, race grade, market source, and whether the price moved persistently or reversed. A strong overall average can conceal failures in particular conditions.
- Separate probability quality from betting returns. Winner-picking accuracy or short-run returns alone do not establish that probabilities are well calibrated or that a signal will persist after margin and execution costs.
Calibration is a validation requirement, not a quality established for any cold-horse radar by the studies discussed here. A model that regularly assigns 30% chances to a group that wins much less often is overstating that group’s chances, even if it occasionally identifies a winner.
What should you conclude from a flagged runner?
Treat the flag as a request for diagnosis. Check whether the price inputs are comparable and current, whether margin treatment is consistent, whether the move is broad or isolated, and whether the model’s estimate has been tested on untouched data in a similar market. If those checks do not support the disagreement, the flag is not evidence of an advantage. Even a well-calibrated estimate is a probability, not a prediction that an individual runner must win.
