Verdict: The Honor 8 was an excellent compact value phone in 2016. In 2026, it is sensible only as a very inexpensive backup, music player, offline-media device, or basic-use handset. Do not choose it as a primary phone for banking, work authentication, modern apps, 5G, or long-term security.
What the Honor 8 is
The Honor 8 is a genuine 2016 smartphone from Honor, then a Huawei sub-brand. It combined a compact 5.2-inch screen, glass-and-metal construction, dual rear cameras, a Kirin 950 processor and 4GB of RAM at a price below contemporary flagship phones. The U.S. launch prices were $399.99 for 32GB and $449.99 for 64GB, with retail availability announced for September 6, 2016 (Honor/PR Newswire).
It was first unveiled in China in July 2016, introduced in the United States on August 16, and launched in Europe at a Paris event on August 25. Those dates matter because this is not a current-generation Honor model.
Do not confuse it with the larger Honor 8X, the higher-spec Honor 8 Pro, the budget Honor 8C, or regional relatives such as the Honor 8 Lite and Honor 8 Smart. The iPhone 8 is an unrelated Apple phone.

These figures come from Honor’s contemporary specification sheet and fact sheet. A listing’s storage, SIM arrangement and radio bands should be checked against its exact model number rather than assumed from the product name.
Design, display and distinctive hardware
The 5.2-inch 1080p panel makes the Honor 8 substantially easier to hold than many modern large phones. Text and photographs remain sharp, and the LCD avoids the burn-in concerns associated with some older OLED phones.
Its rear glass uses multiple reflective layers. That gave the phone a premium appearance in 2016, but the surface is slippery, attracts fingerprints and can crack if dropped. Inspect the back carefully on a used unit, especially around any lifting or separation that could indicate a swollen battery.
The rear fingerprint reader doubles as a programmable “smart key.” Depending on the configured shortcut, pressing it could take a screenshot, activate the flashlight, start voice recording or open an app (Android Authority’s contemporary review). The same review documents the infrared blaster, which can control compatible televisions and other household equipment.

Camera quality: appealing in daylight, dated now
The dual 12MP arrangement pairs a color sensor with a monochrome sensor. For its release period, this was an interesting way to capture extra detail and contrast and to create software effects such as simulated aperture and monochrome images. Honor’s specification material lists night, professional, HDR, panorama, light-painting and document-scan modes.
In 2026, set expectations much lower. The f/2.2 rear aperture is modest, low-light images are noisy, and contemporary reviewers criticized color and video quality. Official documentation limits video recording to 1080p at 30 frames per second; there is no 4K mode in that material and no modern computational-photography or optical-stabilization system (Android Authority). It remains suitable for casual daylight snapshots, not dependable night photography or high-quality video.
Performance and battery in 2026
The Kirin 950 and 4GB of RAM were competitive for an affordable flagship in 2016, and reviews found general performance responsive for the era. A healthy handset can still handle calls, messaging, music, light web browsing, offline navigation and older or simple apps.
Modern games, heavy multitasking, camera processing and newer applications are more likely to expose the processor’s age. App support also depends on the old Android installation and Google Play Services, not just raw hardware.

The original 3,000mAh battery was ordinary rather than exceptional, and a contemporary review identified battery life as a weakness. After roughly a decade, battery condition matters more than the original rating. Ask about rapid percentage drops, unexpected shutdowns, heat while charging and any previous replacement. If the rear glass is lifting, stop using and charging the phone: that can indicate a swollen cell.
Software support and security
The Honor 8 launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and EMUI 4.1. Honor’s official Oreo-era update page listed it as eligible for Android 7.0 Nougat (HONOR’s update information). Later availability varied by model, carrier and region, so do not assume that every unit received an Oreo-based release.
HONOR’s current global security-bulletin model list does not include the Honor 8 (HONOR security bulletins). That omission does not establish the exact date of its final patch, but it does mean buyers should treat the phone as outside the current regular-support program.
- Do not rely on it for banking or financial administration.
- Avoid using it as the main password-manager or work-authentication device.
- Do not store sensitive private information on it.
- Do not make it a child’s only emergency phone when current software reliability is important.
Will an Honor 8 work with a U.S. carrier?
There is no universal answer. Exact model number, region, LTE bands, carrier lock, IMEI status and VoLTE behavior determine whether a particular unit can activate. The original U.S. unlocked model was GSM-oriented and marketed for networks such as AT&T and T-Mobile, not universal U.S. compatibility (Android Authority). Used marketplaces also show separate AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and unlocked listings, confirming that variants are not interchangeable (Back Market).

Check before paying
- Request the exact model number and region.
- Obtain the IMEI, when the seller will provide it, and check that it is not blacklisted or financially encumbered.
- Confirm the carrier lock status.
- Run the IMEI through the intended carrier’s current BYOD checker: AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon.
- Ask the carrier to confirm VoLTE support. Older phones may have working LTE data but fail voice calls after 3G shutdowns.
- Check the SIM size and whether the second slot is shared with microSD.
A phone advertised as “unlocked” can still lack the bands or VoLTE profile your carrier requires. Carrier tools and the exact IMEI are more reliable than a marketplace title. The June 29, 2026 Swappa compatibility guide likewise advises explicit VoLTE verification for phones released in 2018 or earlier.

Buy only when the price is very low, a return period is available, the battery is healthy or professionally replaced, and you knowingly accept old software. Current marketplace prices fluctuate, so evaluate the live listing rather than relying on an advertised “typical” price.
Used Honor 8 inspection checklist
- Match the exact model number, storage, region and SIM configuration to the listing.
- Check IMEI, blacklist status, carrier lock and BYOD acceptance.
- Test screen brightness, touch response, dead zones, cracks and burn-in.
- Inspect the rear glass for lifting, cracks and impact damage.
- Charge through USB-C; watch for intermittent connection, unusual heat or rapid drain.
- Test the fingerprint reader, smart-key shortcut, cameras, flash, speaker, microphone, earpiece and headphone jack.
- Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC if needed, the microSD slot and both SIM positions.
- Confirm the phone is factory-reset and no previous Google or Huawei account remains attached.
- Require a return policy. Swappa’s minimum standards—functional, activation-ready, non-blacklisted phones without cracked glass or water damage—are useful standards even when buying elsewhere (Swappa safety FAQ).
Better choices for most buyers
A new entry-level Android phone usually offers a healthier battery, current app compatibility, carrier certification and a meaningful security-support period, even if its processor looks weaker on paper. A recent refurbished Samsung Galaxy A-series model is often easier to activate in the United States. A refurbished iPhone generally offers longer software support but costs more and uses a different ecosystem. A dedicated basic phone is the better answer if the real requirement is only calls and texts.
The Honor 8X and Honor 9 are different older Honor devices, not automatic solutions to the Honor 8’s support problem. Compare any alternative’s current update policy, carrier compatibility, battery condition and live price before buying.

Swappa offers used listings and seller standards. Back Market has refurbished and carrier-specific pages, including AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile variants. eBay has the broadest selection but also mixes regions, locks, storage capacities and unrelated Honor products. On any marketplace, verify the model, IMEI, battery condition, seller reputation and return terms.
Useful add-ons are a protective case, screen protector, compatible USB-C charger, microSD card where supported and a reputable battery-replacement service. Refurbishment or a new battery does not restore current Android security support.
