Honkai Impact 3rd Team Compositions: How to Match DPS, Support, and Elemental Damage

Build around your intended damage dealer, match support effects to its element and damage type, and check the encounter before trusting a team recommendation.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a Honkai Impact 3rd team around the damage dealer you intend to use, then choose supports whose damage type, element, and kit effects fit that battlesuit and the encounter. Check the enemy, game mode, and current in-game descriptions before treating any lineup as optimal: elemental breach and physical breach serve different damage contexts, some battlesuits can fill overlapping roles, and the available evidence does not establish a universal best-team ranking.

How to build a team that fits the encounter

A team composition is more than a list of strong battlesuits. Its value depends on how the characters’ roles and effects work together against a particular enemy in a particular mode. A damage dealer gives you a starting point, not a complete answer: the supporting characters must help that dealer do the job the encounter demands.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Choose the intended damage dealer. Start with the battlesuit you want to build around and identify its element, damage type, and relevant kit effects from the current in-game descriptions.
  2. Check the encounter and mode. Consider the enemy, its mechanics, and what the active mode rewards or resists. A team that suits one target or mode is not automatically the right choice elsewhere.
  3. Match support effects to the dealer. Look for effects that apply to the dealer’s element or damage mechanic. Do not assume that a character described as support for an element is best for every dealer using that element.
  4. Check breach and other utility. Match elemental breach to an elemental damage context and physical breach to a physical one. They are not interchangeable labels for a generic damage bonus.
  5. Review the whole lineup. Account for role overlap, character availability, investment, and whether the team can cover the encounter’s needs. Then test the composition against the actual content rather than relying on a general ranking.

This is a decision framework, not a claim that the sources establish one current lineup for every mode. The reviewed material offers role examples and a historical synergy example, but no current roster-wide numerical comparison.

Turn the framework into a quick team check

Before choosing characters, write down the specific content you are preparing for and the battlesuit you want to use as the main damage dealer. Then check each proposed teammate against a practical question: what does this character contribute to that dealer in this encounter? A useful answer should point to a current kit effect, relevant damage type or element, or a way the lineup addresses an encounter need. If the answer is only that the character is popular, belongs to an old recommended team, or has a matching element in its name, you still need to verify the fit.

This also makes testing more informative. Keep the encounter and intended dealer fixed while you compare candidate lineups. If you change the target, the mode, and the team all at once, it becomes harder to tell why one option feels more suitable. The aim is not to produce a universal score but to see whether the lineup’s actual support effects and roles make sense for the content in front of you.

Match supports to damage type and element

For an elemental damage dealer, first look for support effects that fit its element or another stated part of its damage kit. The official HoYoverse Jade Knight guide positions her as Ice DMG support and includes equipment recommendations. That makes her a useful example of element-oriented support positioning; it does not establish her as the best support for every Ice dealer or provide enough information to infer a specific best team.

The same caution applies to damage type. Support effects need to make sense for the damage the intended dealer actually deals. A physical-oriented effect should not be treated as an elemental effect, or vice versa, merely because both can improve a team’s output in their intended context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Elemental breach and physical breach are distinct

HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement, published June 25, 2026, describes Wings of Panacea as an SD-type Lightning damage dealer whose support role can increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach. The announcement illustrates two important points: a character can contribute damage while also supporting teammates, and the support effect named in a kit must be matched to the relevant damage context.

The announcement does not provide a current best-team ranking or a numerical comparison of teams. Use its description to understand the character’s stated roles, then check the live in-game kit and the encounter before deciding whether that support effect belongs in your lineup.

What to ask when an element seems to match

A shared element is a useful starting clue, not a complete team-building test. Ask what the proposed support actually does for the dealer: does its description name a relevant damage effect, breach effect, or other utility? Then ask whether the encounter makes that contribution useful. Jade Knight’s official positioning as Ice DMG support is evidence of a role direction, but it is not a promise that she fits every Ice lineup. The character guide’s searchable text does not expose team recommendations, so it should not be stretched into a more specific claim.

Apply the same restraint to breach. If a kit description names Elemental Breach, treat it as an elemental support effect; if it names Physical Breach, treat it as a physical one. Wings of Panacea is an especially clear illustration because HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement refers to both kinds of breach in describing her support function. The announcement does not quantify their value in a particular team, so the decision still depends on the damage dealer and encounter.

Damage dealer and support are roles, not rigid labels

It is useful to distinguish a team’s primary damage dealer from its supports, but do not assume every battlesuit has only one function. A character can deal damage and provide useful support, while a nominal support may contribute damage as part of a lineup. Evaluate the actual kit effects in the context of the team rather than relying on a role label alone.

A player-authored Coralie guide for version 8.4, dated August 21, 2025, describes her as a Fire damage dealer and also discusses support use through elemental and physical breach. It proposes team contexts involving Grail of Infinitude and Law of Ascension. This is a dated, community-authored example of role overlap, not an official recommendation or evidence that those are the best current teams. Check the live game before applying its suggestions.

Role overlap is worth considering because a lineup is a system: one battlesuit’s contribution may not fit neatly into a single label. Still, do not conclude that a dual-role character automatically improves every team. Check which of its effects are relevant to your intended dealer, and whether the lineup as a whole addresses the encounter. The version 8.9 Wings of Panacea announcement and the version 8.4 Coralie guide show why a simple DPS-versus-support split can be incomplete, but neither establishes a universal rule about which role should take priority.

What the available team examples do—and do not—show

Example What it illustrates What it does not establish
Jade Knight, in an official HoYoverse character guide Her stated positioning as Ice DMG support and the presence of equipment recommendations. A specific best lineup. The guide’s searchable text does not expose actual team recommendation details.
Wings of Panacea, in HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement published June 25, 2026 An SD-type Lightning damage dealer with a support role described as increasing teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach. A full meta analysis, a numerical team comparison, or a universal recommendation.
Coralie, in a player-authored version 8.4 beta guide dated August 21, 2025 A dated example of a Fire damage dealer also discussed in a support role, with proposed contexts involving Grail of Infinitude and Law of Ascension. Current official guidance or proof that the proposed team contexts remain optimal.
Herrscher of Finality, Herrscher of Origin, and Herrscher of Truth, in an older version 6.4 beta guide How coordinated character interactions can shape a specialized trio. A present-day best-team recommendation. The guide is too old to establish one.

These examples are useful for understanding how role fit and character synergy can matter. Their dates and source types matter too: an official character guide or update announcement describes positioning or kit information, while a player guide gives community advice tied to its stated version. Neither kind of example substitutes for checking the current encounter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Herrscher trio is best read as a lesson about specificity. The older version 6.4 beta guide describes a coordinated lineup centered on Herrscher of Finality, Herrscher of Origin, and Herrscher of Truth. That example shows that some teams are shaped by interactions among particular characters rather than by assembling one damage dealer and any broadly useful supports. It does not show that this trio is still the right choice for a current mode, boss, or roster. Its age is part of the context, not a minor footnote.

Read examples at the level their evidence supports. An official character guide can establish how a character is positioned; an update announcement can describe a role or effect; a dated player guide can offer a version-specific team proposal. Those are different kinds of information. For example, Jade Knight’s Ice support positioning is useful, but it does not reveal a best team. Coralie’s proposed contexts are more specific, but they come from a player-authored version 8.4 beta guide, not an official current recommendation.

How to compare two candidate teams

If two lineups both seem plausible, compare them against the same encounter instead of asking which is universally stronger. The available sources do not provide measured rankings across these criteria, so use them to make a reasoned choice rather than to assign an unsupported score.

  • Role overlap and rotation: Does each character’s contribution make sense in the lineup, including where a battlesuit deals damage and supports at the same time?
  • Availability and investment: Can you field the team with your roster and investment, or is another suitable lineup more practical for you?

Keep the comparison tied to the specific content you plan to play. An answer based only on a character’s element, a support label, or a historical example leaves out the encounter and the rest of the team’s effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A side-by-side comparison without pretending there is a universal winner

For each candidate, note the intended dealer, its damage element or type, and the supporting effects you expect the other battlesuits to provide. Next to that, write the encounter or mode you have in mind and any enemy mechanics that matter. This simple comparison keeps the question concrete: which lineup has support effects that correspond to this dealer, and which looks better suited to this content with the characters you can actually field?

Do not turn the checklist into made-up precision. The cited examples do not supply current damage numbers, comparative test results, or a ranked list of teams. If both lineups appear plausible, try them in the same content and use the current in-game descriptions to understand what each character is contributing. The conclusion may be that one fits your roster or encounter more conveniently, not that it is objectively best across Honkai Impact 3rd.

Investment and availability belong in the comparison because an idealized lineup is not useful if it is not one you can field. The sources do not provide costs or a numerical investment threshold, so there is no sound basis here for prescribing a particular spending level. Treat the practical question as roster fit: which suitable combination is accessible to you, and does it still cover the content’s demands?

Why old team lists can mislead

Team advice is version- and encounter-dependent. A beta guide describes guidance for a particular development period; it does not by itself confirm how that lineup performs in the live game now. An older version 6.4 beta guide’s Herrscher trio is a clear example of a lineup with specialized synergy, but its age makes it unsuitable as a current recommendation without fresh verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Official character material also has limits. Jade Knight’s guide establishes her Ice DMG support positioning, but the searchable text does not provide usable team recommendations. HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement describes Wings of Panacea’s damage and support functions, but an update announcement is not a complete meta analysis. Treat each source according to what it actually says.

Use the version and date as part of your reading of any advice. A player guide dated August 21, 2025, for version 8.4 beta is a snapshot of its stated context, while HoYoverse’s version 8.9 Wings of Panacea announcement was published June 25, 2026. The latter is the more recent of these examples, but even a newer release announcement is not a current roster-wide evaluation. Neither date removes the need to check the present kit descriptions, active mode, and target.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

A practical rule is to separate enduring questions from version-specific answers. “Does this support effect match my dealer’s damage context?” remains a useful question. “Is this exact character combination best now?” depends on the live game and encounter, and should not be answered from an old beta guide alone. If a recommendation names a patch, mode, boss, or character interaction, preserve that context rather than copying the lineup as if it applied everywhere.

Common team-building mistakes

  • Copying a lineup without checking its version: Look for the guide’s version and date, then verify the relevant kits and content in the live game.
  • Choosing a support from its label alone: Check which element, damage type, or kit effect it actually supports.
  • Using breach terms interchangeably: Elemental breach and physical breach are separate effects; match the one described in the kit to the team’s damage context.
  • Assuming a support cannot deal damage: Check for role overlap instead of treating role labels as exclusive.
  • Calling one lineup universally best: The available sources do not establish a current universal ranking. Consider the encounter, mode, enemy, roster, and patch.

Another common mistake is treating an example as proof. Jade Knight’s role positioning does not prove that she is the ideal partner for every Ice damage dealer. Wings of Panacea’s breach support description does not prove that either breach effect belongs in every team. Coralie’s version 8.4 beta guide does not turn its proposed Grail of Infinitude or Law of Ascension contexts into current official advice. Keep each claim attached to what the source actually establishes.

Reader questions about building a team

How do I build a team?

Start with the damage dealer and the encounter you want to handle. Check that battlesuit’s current element, damage type, and kit effects; choose teammates whose stated effects support that damage context; then consider enemy mechanics, the mode, roster availability, and role overlap. Test the composition in the content rather than treating an old list as a universal answer.

How do I match elemental damage?

Identify the dealer’s element and look for support effects that explicitly fit that element or another relevant part of its kit. Jade Knight is an official example of Ice DMG support positioning, but that role description alone does not identify a best Ice team. Check the support’s actual current description and the encounter before deciding.

Which characters are DPS and which are supports?

Use role labels as a guide, not a hard boundary. Some battlesuits can deal damage and support teammates, depending on their kit and the lineup. HoYoverse describes Wings of Panacea in version 8.9 as an SD-type Lightning damage dealer whose support role can increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach. A player-authored version 8.4 beta guide also discusses Coralie as a Fire damage dealer with support use. Both examples show why it is worth checking the actual kit rather than assuming roles never overlap.

Are elemental breach and physical breach the same?

No. They are distinct support effects and should be considered in their relevant elemental or physical damage context. HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement names both in describing Wings of Panacea’s support role, but does not offer a universal team recommendation or numerical comparison. Verify the effect in the live kit and match it to the intended dealer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Herrscher trio still a recommended team?

The older version 6.4 beta guide is useful as an example of coordinated synergy among Herrscher of Finality, Herrscher of Origin, and Herrscher of Truth. Its age does not support presenting it as a current recommendation. Check current character descriptions and the content you plan to play before adopting any older lineup.

Is there one best team for every mode?

The cited guides and announcements do not establish a universal current ranking. A lineup’s fit can depend on the enemy, mechanics, mode, patch, roster, and investment. Compare candidate teams against the same content and prioritize the support effects that actually fit your chosen damage dealer.

A practical final check before using a team

Before committing to a lineup, confirm the battlesuits’ current kit descriptions, the damage dealer’s element and type, and the support effects you intend to use. Make sure the team fits the enemy and mode, and treat older examples as illustrations until their advice is verified against the live game. If the team does not suit the encounter, revisit the support match rather than assuming the character list is optimal because it appeared in a guide.

In short, ask three questions before you queue: what is my intended dealer’s damage context, what does each teammate actually contribute to it, and does that contribution fit this encounter? If any answer depends on an old or vague team recommendation, check its version and verify the live kit. That process is more dependable than looking for a single lineup that is supposed to solve every fight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I build a Honkai Impact 3rd team?

Choose the damage dealer and encounter first. Match teammates’ stated effects to the dealer’s element and damage type, account for enemy mechanics and mode, then check roster availability and test the lineup in the relevant content.

How do I match elemental damage with supports?

Look for support effects that fit the dealer’s element or another stated part of its damage kit. Jade Knight is positioned by HoYoverse as Ice DMG support, but that alone does not establish her as best for every Ice dealer.

Are elemental breach and physical breach interchangeable?

No. They apply to different damage contexts. HoYoverse’s version 8.9 announcement describes Wings of Panacea as able to increase teammates’ Elemental Breach or Physical Breach; check the current kit and match the effect to the team.

Can a battlesuit be both a damage dealer and a support?

Yes. Evaluate the actual kit in the context of the lineup rather than treating role labels as exclusive. HoYoverse’s version 8.9 Wings of Panacea announcement and a player-authored version 8.4 Coralie guide are examples of overlapping roles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Herrscher of Finality, Origin, and Truth trio a current best team?

An older version 6.4 beta guide describes the trio as a coordinated lineup, but it is too old to establish a current recommendation. Verify present-day kits and the target mode before using it.

Is there a universal best team for every Honkai Impact 3rd mode?

The cited examples do not establish a current universal ranking. Team fit depends on the encounter, enemy, mode, patch, and the roster and investment available to you.

The Bottom Line

Build around the damage dealer, match support effects—including the relevant type of breach—to its damage context, and judge the lineup against the actual encounter. Treat dated team examples as illustrations, not universal rankings, and verify current kits before relying on them.
