Hong Kong’s Transport Department trialled pole-mounted LED devices that project red light onto the ground where pedestrians wait at crossings. They supplement—not replace—the ordinary pedestrian signals, and pedestrians are still told to follow the signals.
Why Hong Kong trialled the devices
The Transport Department said pedestrians looking down at handheld smart devices may pay less attention to traffic signals. In response, it began a trial in July 2022 at four signalised crossing locations. The devices add a visual cue at the waiting area; the stated purpose is to draw attention to the red crossing phase.

How the projected warning works
Each device has an LED light module mounted on an extension arm attached to a traffic-signal pole. When the pedestrian signal shows the red “man,” the module casts red light onto the pedestrian waiting area. The equipment projects light onto the ground; the official description does not say that lights are embedded in the pavement.

The device switches off when the pedestrian signal is green or flashing green and automatically adjusts its brightness to ambient light. It is auxiliary equipment, not a substitute for the standard pedestrian signal. Hong Kong’s Transport Department advises pedestrians to follow the ordinary traffic signals.

What the trial does—and does not—establish
The reported trial concerns four signalised crossing locations and began in July 2022. That description establishes how the equipment is intended to operate, but it does not by itself establish that the devices prevent collisions, how much they change pedestrian behaviour, or whether they were subsequently installed more widely. The warning light should therefore be understood as an added cue, not a guarantee of safety.
